Must-Have Spare Parts for Cycling in the French Alps | Watts New?
Wondering if I've made a big mistake 😆 ... victim of the broom end of Turini last year, so still have a box to tick off, but now have a better idea of what's instore and I don't like it lol😅
It’s a LONG time until next July. Fore warned is fore armed and you now know what you need to work on to get across the finish line. Good luck and thanks for watching
Is your bike still the lightcarbon one? I was thinking about buying from them- should I?
Yes I’m still riding it at the moment. I think it will be relegated to my Winter bike this year 😊
I was there in 2019 and went up the Roseland at the start. The descent is very good from there, I did notice half way down there were a couple of crashes but there were marshals with flags to warn riders at danger points. Looking at the profile I would say get to the top of the Roseland and then you have a long downhill before La Plagne. Once on the final climb you can relax a bit. Weather is the key, if you have cloud cover then that makes a big difference.
Thanks for watching. Yes its a very similar profile to 2019 although 2025 will be much tougher with the Saisies and Col du Pres before the Roselend summit.
Looks a great route - definitely not an easy one - that last climb will feel very long
Yes I don’t think the Etape will ever be easy ! Thanks for watching
Thanks for this presentation. It looks similar to 2024 in terms of distance and elevation. Will you also present the other one from Tour de France Femmes ? I have registered for both 😊
Thanks for watching. Yes similar statistics however an extra climb and the altitudes may make an affect on the Roselend and the final climb. I plan to have a look at the TdF Femmes Etape in the Spring. Good luck!
Thanks for the video, used one of your water stop tips on the etape in 2022 - any idea exactly where in la Plagne the finish will be? Ive booked a hotel close to belle plagne thinking it will be a short ride after finish and help me acclimatise before… driving down to somewhere near albertville on the morning of event… last time I made the mistake of having to get up at 3am to get the bus from alpe dhuez to Briancon that my tour operator organised.. it was not the best start, I finished but suffered!!
Thanks Mark - the GPX in the description is the TdF finish - there's no official GPX for the Etape yet but I don't think you will have too far to ride. Much easier logistics that the Briancon etape. Good luck!
Great insight thanks. Looking forward to it. It’s 500m more elevation than Annemasse-Morzine a couple years ago, so not going to be a breeze. Not much flat recovery.
Yes Glenn its a less technical etape both on the ascents and specifically on the descents apart from the sketchy bits I highlighted. Good luck!
Look forward to your spring deeper look at La Plagne. Not ridden it yet but it holds a high position on my must do list due to that infamous moment in 1987 - "It's Stephen Roche" - that said with the multiple resorts up there its not 100% clear which was the official road and finish that year that i can find
Thanks for watching. Yes I remember the 87 Tour well. Charly Mottet lives just by me - we were chatting about it a couple of weeks back. There's no official GPX of the Etape route at the moment - this is the best I've tracked down www.strava.com/routes/3286377348155108518
Hello Mike. Any thoughts on where to drive to and park up for the day (for those of us who can drive to the event and back home on the day)?
Hi - I think I would be aiming for somewhere on the Albertville side of Moutiers depending on how much of a warm up you want. I think it would be failry easy to find somewhere around Grignon - I guess its a toss up between a longer ride to the start, or from the finish and then there's always the train from Aime to Albertville after the event but the service isn't very regular.
Turn your screen up to HD and join me for a look at the Etape du Tour 2025 route! How difficult is the Etape 2025? What do you think? Drop any questions below I've added a link into the description of the incident of Johan Bruyneel descending the Roselend.
What are the rumors about where the L'etape event will be held for 2025 ?
@@JoeKrafka-u1b most consistent seems to be Albertville to La Plagne

Thanks for the feedback!
🇨🇭Join me in Switzerland! Route inspiration from the Swiss Gravel Epic. Thanks for watching!
My Home mountain! Strangely I usually climb it a fifth way .... via Col du Mont Sion and St Blaise (it joins up with the Cruseilles side).
yes I did that a while back with a mate but just on its own! Drive past the Saleve most days - great mountain and quiet!
Nice one.Will try next ime
Sure 😊 its easy!
Thanks for sharing Mike - be great to see it in the local area again
Interesting. I'm anticipating that the TdF might use the Samoens finish that was 'trialled' in the Dauphine this year too?
Yes I think that climb is destined for the TDF at some point. I've only driven it up to now but from the car it looks tougher than the Joux Plane with some super steep ramps. There seems to be enough space at the summit for the TDF entourage.
I recently chatted with a local who is >>>>>> 'in the know' >>>>>>>Thanks for watching. Drop any questions in the comments below.

Nice, very cool too see the real climb next to the virtual one in Zwift! You're lucky to have done both--so, how does it compare riding the two? ...aside from missing those views!
Zwift is very accurate - I actually rode and recorded the Zwift version on a turbo in a garage in the UK whilst cisiting family which is a bit surreal! Thanks for watching.
My local climb made it to Zwift! Check out the climb portal schedule here zwiftinsider.com/climb-portal-schedule/ Drop any comments or questions below cheers Mike
Great vid and stunning ride, envious. How would you rate the LightCarbon frameset a few years on? I’m very close to buying one but concerns over frameset quality, mainly safety to be honest. I haven’t found anything bad about them so that must be a good thing.
Thanks for watching. I'm still using it - I did have the same concerns however they are now at Eurobike and they were whitelabeling for Nove bikes that I vaguely remember an ex-pro riding for a while. I've raced on it - etape last year - and very happy with the quality.
Awesome, thanks for the quick reply! Hard to find a RIM brake frameset these days so think I’ll grab one.
@@anemlachhomebrewing3690 are you in the UK? What size are you?
@@CyclingInTheAlps I’m in Australia, ordered the 580 size last night 😃
Taking my new LCR bike for a first spin tomorrow, looking forward to it 😃 Customer service has been great, delivery was well packaged and tolerance on the headset bearings seemed pretty good to my inexperienced eye. Fantastic ride, being close to nature, thats why we cycle :)
Thanks Mike - yes its good for the soul isn't it
Great video Mike. I fondly remember that climb and often tell people about it as it is one of the videos I use during my spin classes. I also remember the epic descent off the top on the french side. Keep up the good work Mike and boy do I miss those rides with you in the Alps 😢
Thanks Richard - yes its an epic climb! I can;t believe that was 10 years ago??
Stunning day on the Col du Petit St Bernard. Thanks for watching. Drop any questions below cheers Mike
Sorry to hear about your dads passing Mike. We all deal with grief differently - glad you are back out on the bike; it s much better place to be than the sofa.......
Thanks Richard
Sorry to hear about your father Mike. What sort of mileage you think you will be doing on a weekly basis, I would like to drop a few KG’s, not been on the bike as much this year so far either?
Thanks Andy. I'm aiming to do about 8 hours a week. One long ride towards 100km and then just the usual up and down the local climbs so not massive distance but lumpy. Hipe all well there.
@@CyclingInTheAlps Sounds a good plan mike. Have subscribed and therefore will look forward to your progress with interest. See hello to J.
Glad you're getting out and about again, lovely photo of you and your Dad xx

Haaallo Sir! I remembered your video when you joined the Tour Des Stations 2023. I joined TDS too last year (2023) and mount saleve was my training ground for TDS. It is indeed a challenging climb especially croisette side. But, it is a very good place to train. Don't get fooled of the avg gradients written it is harder in person. 🤣 Thanks for featuring my favorite climbs. 😁 Do the La Baudichone and La Barillette next! And do an extra Saint Cergue. It is in jura mountain and happy to guide you if you're around geneva. 😄
Thanks for watching - I'll check those climbs out
So no marmotte then this year Mike? 🙁🤣🤣
Definately not - unless a miracle happens and I do this one! tourdesstations.ch/granfondo/
Hi Mike - great to see you back on the bike and posting again - I've missed those views! I'm in a similar position with training up and down this year and am just getting over covid (its still around.....). I have a week in Bormio early July followed by a week just outside Samoens, so need to get my but in gear too!! Good luck with your return to fitness - I will be following with interest! 👊💪
Thanks Richard. Enjoy your trips !
Amazing spin,thank you for sharing!

Go Mike! Never mind the views and mountain air, those road surfaces look like a world apart from the potholes and traffic around me!
Thanks Leigh. We do have some potholes! I will try and get them on film next time :-)
Those views 😍...great to see you back Mike...
Thanks Adam. Enjoy your trip.
It'll definitely come back with some consistent training & what a motivator getting to see those amazing views to reward the effort.
