DEMO: An Enclave Mission, from Start to Finish
I may have been involved in many of the discussions leading up to these revisions, may have been involved in many side discussions about the specifics in the meeting notes, may have already read the errata, but I gotta watch the whole thing to make sure editor-Robby includes all the important criticisms being discussed in the Discord, lol.
And indeed, I want to continue to voice my belief that the official responses to an Inference should actually be: "Yes," "No, but," and, "It is not clear."
Hmmm, didn't realize my sound quality was so bad- I wonder if my Discord was using the wrong mic. Sorry about that everyone!
No problem my friend! Happens to the best of us
What a joy discovering and playing Enclave has been! I'm always excited for an opportunity to host, play or just talk about Enclave. Its been an awesome year with the game and I can't wait for Aspirant so that I can dig in deeper.
@@scrapbots thank you so much for saying so my friend! You are an absolute pillar of the community, and I am so grateful for all you've done for the game. It was a lucky day for me when you decided to give it a try! Can't wait to show you more about Aspirant.
Though I wasn't around for the Legacy years, it's been great to see how much the game has developed just in the year since Advent's release. It's great to see the server so much busier these days, and I'm sure that trend will continue with you (and others) going off to cons to spread word of the game. Also, I'm seriously hyped for Aspirant. I know we've already discussed some of the potential changes on the server, but I look forward to learning more in the coming months.
@@reiteration6273 And it's been a pleasure having you along for the ride my friend! You've been a tremendously contributive member of the community, and I'm grateful for all the time and effort that you have put into the game as well. Can't wait to show you more about Aspirant! I think a discerning and rules-oriented person like yourself will in particular find a lot to like about it.
Who knew a food court could be this romantic
It seemed like standoff completely froze the overadexi ai. And the players were always outnumbering the enemy. Feel like they could have avoided a lot of fighting by tactically using standoff, esp in the finale, and simply walk Loxpin to his suit?
When I was creating these enemies I wanted to make sure that standoff would affect them pretty substantively without making the mission a complete cakewalk, so I can promise you at the very least the ability wouldn't have negated TOO much combat! The end was also a very different situation since they were able to directly affect the suits' controller, which allowed a single standoff to be a lot more impactful than it would have at earlier points. But I do think that in retrospect there are probably many ways they could have used the ability more optimally, I was a little surprised that they didn't try to push it more than they did.
I finally got around to finishing this one, and I think it's really cool mission design to have the players escorting the client around trying to get him to safety... I might have to steal that for one of my own games some time. ^_^; I think for me Dennis' portrayal of Pike was the highlight, from using his fingers as ammo to having his head explode and reform. When that happened I was really surprised, obviously, but it was totally awesome. I did worry at first, when Dennis proposed having it happen, that by just taking damage and reforming (I was assuming he wasn't planning on continuing the mission headless), it could potentially trivialise the fight, but when it came to actually describing the healing process, I thought he did great portraying the exertion involved in pulling himself back together, making it clear that even with all his +s to Resilience, this wasn't the sort of trick Pike would be able to keep doing over and over. I also found Crow as entertaining as ever, particularly when he was repeatedly infuriating RED by insisting she was a werewolf. XD RED herself seems like an interesting character, and is definitely aesthetically unique, at least compared to what I've seen so far, since most folks have stuck mainly to human-like characters. I think it's good to see someone doing something a bit different, to remind folks that there are more options available. Of course, a lot of what Gemini was saying about her went over my head, since I wasn't here for Legacy Enclave, so all the lore pertaining to her family is totally lost on me. It sounds like he's definitely put a lot of thought into it, though.
I always love reading your analyses, and this is of course no exception! Couldn't agree more with what you've said. This mission had such a fascinating dynamic between its characters. Also different, yet all the same class, and all interacting with each other and the mission in such unique ways! I think on a mechanical level this is also probably the most compelling combat I have yet had on an actual play. Really pushed the gunslinger to its limits, and it's so fantastic to see how all three of these players uniquely rose to the challenge.
It was great to finally participate in one of these Actual Plays, thanks for having me on. Both Lee & Jim played their characters really well. It's no surprise that Lee would pull off some impressive tricks (my favorite of which has to be the Shield Wall in the gun barrel causing it to misfire - which was such a cool Energywork of that Ability) but Jim was really impressive as well. I thought it was particularly impressive the way he used the scenery to his advantage, having Sloan use first the Pabbages' home then the trees outside Gus' compound as vantage points to enhance the effectiveness of his rifle. Despite having played a Gunslinger (a lot) myself, I've rarely done anything like that, so if I hadn't known better, I'd definitely have assumed he had a lot of experience with the game.
It was fantastic having you on at last! You will definitely be invited in the future as well, my friend. Couldn't agree more about Jim showing a ton of excellent game sense, really impressive for a first timer. You do play quite an unconventional gunslinger heheheh, but in general positioning is really, really important for the class to do well, and I think Jim absolutely nailed this element in particular. Without a doubt the best positioning I have ever seen in a first time player, not even to mention a first time gunslinger.
Great session :)
Thanks so much for saying so! I was quite pleased with it myself
Ladies and gentlemen, the first ever Enclave mission to take place in a Buc-ee's
Holy shit you're not wrong!
I was able to catch this one live, but I figured I may as well comment about it here, since I think I've commented on all the other Actual Plays. SPOILER WARNING This one had a really interesting enemy, and it was cool to see the players problem-solve their way through the fight at the end. I also really enjoyed the anti-witch dynamic that Crow & Svietislaus had going on. Of all the agents Ariadne could've been paired up with, I think those two might be the only witch-hating characters I've seen so far. Either very unlucky, or Enclave HQ has it out for her. XD Ariadne's manifestations are always a pleasure, and even though these ones weren't quite as striking as literally turning herself into a spider, Lethal still did a great job showing off the benefits of a high Arcane Stat. From the Goo Positioning System (GPS), to conjuring needles in the creature's bloodstream, to making her own blood flammable, this session made her feel to me like a witch with truly versatile magic, plus some spider qualities, whereas previously she seemed primarily spider-themed, with a bit of witch thrown in. Although I have a lot of experience playing the Gunslinger Class myself, I think Detour does it better than me. Throughout this mission, Crow was getting up close and personal with the monster and had no problem rushing on ahead, whether that was in attempting to pull it out of a toilet, running to the second bathroom after it claimed another victim, clambering through the pipes into its lair, even scaling the monster's shell. And although he wasn't the one to eventually slay the beast, for the majority of the boss fight at the end, he felt like the primary threat to me, while the other two were messing around with garlic and otters. Last but not least, I'm so glad Svietislaus finally made it onto one of these actual plays. He's a character I've hosted a few sessions for myself, and I think Tomàš has done a great job making a Librarian viable in combat. Although he couldn't do much with his spear in the boss fight, since the monster's main body had a shell, his initial assault on the tentacle from the toilet was great. I found it really funny to see Ariadne trying to defend them all with a magic circle, only for Svietislaus to immediately leave it and stab the thing through the face.
I always love reading your breakdowns, and I'm very pleased you made time to create one despite having caught the mission live! Couldn't agree more with you on your various character assessments. Greg continues to be an Arcane god, showing just a little bit more restraint on this one despite the ridiculous stuff he can consistently pull off. Her interpersonal dynamics with the other two were absolutely a high point of the mission for me, and all three of the players did a great job contributing to that. I think you undersell your own gunslinger play! But there's no doubt that Detour played Crow fantastically. His positioning is really exceptional, and it's something I'm noticing more and more about how he handles the character. Svietislaus was so overdue to participate in an AP. I'm really glad I finally got a chance to see the character in action, especially in such a charged interpersonal setting. I legitimately thought we would see some PVP! Thanks as always for watching my friend. Your insights are really enjoyable as always.
Apologies for the unbalanced audio, everyone -- my players sounded much louder in my ears when I did the sound test then they ended up being in practice!
"Squire got dominated" _NOOOOOOOOO_
I know! Such a shame. But it will have its time, you can count on that!
My favorite got sidelined by a tie, but the ones that got picked are also really cool. Here's looking forward to stretch goals!
Ahh damn, very sorry to hear that. But they will have their time in the spotlight as well, I promise!
Even though my favourite got stomped, all the winning classes do seem like they'll be a lot of fun, so this bodes very well for Aspirant.
Well said!
First! Woo!
Great mission. 👌 *SPOILER WARNING* I particularly enjoyed the second half, once they’d gotten past the initial room, though the part I found funniest was right at the start, with Avanya yelling "We both hate chairs!" - really undermining Glitch's attempt to look cool. 🤣 I thought Detour did especially well this time. While Avanya's antics were certainly the most eye-catching part of the escapade to me, Hemlock's blood magic and divine rituals were probably the most impressive bit. Although I've not played one myself, I think Librarian has to be my favourite Advent class. They’re a blast to Conduit for, 'cos you never know what kind of weird stuff they might come up with during a mission. Finally, the character I'm most familiar with of these three is Glitch, having run a few games for him myself, and it’s great to see him here. I love the sliding stat bar thing Shade did to adjust his sense of smell near the start. More than any of his illusionist kit, that sort of Manifestation is what I associate most with Glitch, so I'm glad Shade's still leaning into that sort of thing.
A brilliant review as always my friend! I completely agree with you that Detour blew this out of the water. Both he and Shade did some really impressive manifestation during this session, and both have made characters that really push the boundaries of their respective classes, but I would agree with you that Hemlock stole the show. Really glad you enjoyed, and it's always great to read your analysis. I hope to see you play a Librarian someday yourself!
The Vessel seems very fun but *Embrace Darkness* was too vague. In which ways does a player lose control? I sense that having guidelines around this (Triggers, Targeting, Powers, What does the trance force you to do and when?) would make this easier to manage for both players and GMs.
You make an excellent point, but I was really trying to not get into the weeds with these teasers. I am happy to give you some idea of what I have planned for it (though of course it may be subject to change)! The current plan is for the abilities paired action to require a display of strong negative emotion. However, if the character expresses a strong negative emotion in other contexts, the ability may activate even if they were not intending it to do so. In the trance state my current plan is that you might manifest magical appendages with substantial and dangerous power or some other similar combat ability, possibly with a direct boost to manifestation. Does that answer your questions? Happy to answer more if you have any
" Aperture Science, We do what we must because we can, For the good of all of us, Except the ones who are dead! But there's no sense crying over every mistake, You just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake, And the science gets done and you make a neat gun, For the people who are *still alive!* " ☆☆☆☆☆☆ Sorry, I couldn’t resist. In all seriousness, though, these sound epic. No matter which classes are selected, it seems like Aspirant Edition should offer options to satisfy everyone.
Glad to hear you say it my friend!
Finally got around to finishing one of these. I was already amazed with the stunning setting you managed to craft (heaviely inspired by the Haida people, I am guessing?) and then it turns out that that is only the surface, and there are several more layers to the mission still. Exceptional job! Another thing I really liked is how you mentioned that there is a lot of megafauna around... and then that is not even important for the mission. Great way to do some world building and also give a minor anti-hint.
I should be surprised that you picked out the Haida inspiration so quickly heheheh. Bang on the money! Absolutely delighted that you enjoyed the world building. As you rightly say, throwing out little bits like the megafauna mention is a great way to add texture. Your players will have no idea whether such a mention is going to be relevant to the mission or not, and it can be a fun thread that you can explore later on if you want to add a major twist. Or just leave to gently misdirect your players.
[Spoiler Warning] This one was *really* interesting for me, and stuck out to me a lot compared to any of the others... though to explain why, I am going to have to lightly disagree with one point you made in the conclusion, Robby. You said that Calypso got more helpful interactions from the NPCs than the other two, which is something I didn't notice at all. In fact, the thing that stuck out to me most about this particular mission was that I thought *all* of the characters seemed in command of the situation, more or less equally. Even when they themselves didn't have a clue what was going on, it seemed to me that the NPCs were always willing to take orders from basically anyone with the wherewithal to give them, particularly after their heads cleared. Of all the NPC interactions, I'd say the one that stuck out to me the most was actually Vollanoch shushing the singers with Siri's help, via her mirror-breaking. Being able to get every single one of them to stop simultaneously was just such a spectacular moment, IMO. And I'm not sure if there was any magical compulsion to his words, but to me they just seemed *really* cooperative. I think the best contrast I can give to this mission would be The Adder & The Rain, where in the outro, you said to Kylie that if she'd led with arming the crowd, it would've gone nowhere. Whereas in this one, even before their heads were cleared, Siri was able to straight away round up a few of the NPCs and put them to work. I really liked the dynamic it gave the characters here, because while it totally makes sense for people to question strangers who randomly start bossing them around, the automatic obedience was a nice change of pace relative to the other Actual Plays, and it did fit well in this situation, as the NPCs obviously were very panicked. Plus (on a more practical note) due to the sheer number of NPCs that the players had to interact with, making them to pause and explain themselves to every new NPC probably would've slowed things down *a lot.* Other than that, I also wanted to say that I'm really glad you allowed Siri to get her mirror back, post-mission. I'm not generally very fond of consumable items in TTRPGs, so even though it was such a cool moment when she broke the mirror, I'm very relieved that her decision to do that didn't result in a long-term setback for her. Also, a few other really cool moments that stuck out to me were: 1) Siri's hat-scenery veneer into blindfold phantasm into reverse viewpoint, which I totally did not see coming. I did catch that she said she was putting the veneer on the inside of her hat, but all I could think of was that she was gonna try and fling the hat over his face. So when she did the actual plan, I was amazed. Before watching this, I don't think it would've even occurred to me that it could be possible to link all three Illusionist Abilities into a single combo. 2) Vollanoch shushing the wind to spook Vain was *such* a cool manifestation, and the way Dennis played into his earlier "Shhh" instructions really made it feel to me like he was establishing a theme for his character, and thereby selling the manifestation better. Also, the fact that he was just shushing people (& forces of nature) felt extremely in-character for a Librarian, even though it's not actually one of their Abilities. 3) Calypso drop-kicking the ocean. Like, *wow,* that was awesome. I think probably one of the best examples I've seen of something in Enclave that's just not at all viable in the overwhelming majority of TTRPGs. Comparing this to games like D&D or Pathfinder, where each spell and feature has a very specific, defined effect, this just hits home for me how much more freedom Enclave offers. She *kicked a hole in the sea.* Finally, I'd like to finish up by saying that I felt Vain was an excellent villain, because the whole way through, he felt to me just like a force of nature, rather than an enemy that could actually be fought... which really highlighted just how impressive these three were, when by working together in the best example of teamwork I've seen yet in one of these missions, they did actually manage to harm him. P.S. Okay, that's me caught up with the Actual Plays now. No more essays to write for a while. ^_^;
WOW, what a masterpiece of a review! You put my own breakdown to shame heheheh And you know, in retrospect I totally agree with what you say about Calypso's NPC interactions not being above the others (though the way she approached the mission certainly had plenty of other things going for it). I think that with a more experienced playgroup and a little more time I might have chosen for the NPCs to be slightly more resistant or difficult to work with, but you outlined a lot of the reasons why I made the choices I did with their cooperativeness. It's a delicate balancing act to juggle, because you want to make sure that there's some realism to how willing to work with the squad NPCs are, but you also don't want to stall out the mission over it! The one piece here that was quite interesting was how cooperative the enemies were. I was trying to convey that they were beings with very little will of their own, very docile and honestly quite easy to push around once you tried. I made them that way both to contrast them with Vain, their godhead, and to ensure that there was counterplay to the brutal anarchy they were sewing with their singing. Hopefully that came across the way I wanted it to! As for the other cool moments you pointed out, I wholeheartedly agree with all of them. Enclave does actually have consumables, but those are always things that you opt into and are kept separate from your class gear, letting players opt into that more risky play style if they wish without punishing those who, like Mary May, want to commit to the game and make great use of their stuff! It's also absolutely hilarious to me how well Dennis made use of that shushing motif considering that, at an earlier point in Enclave's life cycle, the Librarian actually HAD an ability called Shush! It's really been a treat getting your review of all these Actual Play episodes. When I get back to doing it regularly I very much look forward to hearing more from you!
This one had a really interesting setting, which it seems is already popular with the legacy players, unsurprisingly. And great job to both Robby and the players for managing to come up with so many memorable moments [spoilers]: With things like Malaj offering up the box to Ahi and accidentally dodging a harpoon in the process; Hellspawn's epic leap into Standoff against the mountains; and of course, Arus' monstrous phantasm, any of these (amongst others) could've easily been play-of-the-game in many other missions. I'd also like to say that I'm looking forward to seeing Arus at level 2. I find it kinda funny that so far the only characters who've gotten there in Advent Edition are are both Illusionists, and it'll be cool to see how he'll differ from Siri when he gets his first Perk. I hope we'll get to see more recurring characters in future as well, as I'm finding myself getting invested in those I've seen multiple times. Lastly, I want to finish up by saying that I loved what Lee did with Malaj. Their voice, mannerisms, and suchlike just made them really stand out. Such an out-there character.
Another brilliant review! I certainly agree with everything you've said here, especially the part about it being weird how both of our most recurring characters on these missions are Illusionists heheheh Special mention definitely must be made of Lee and his character acting. He has a knack for coming up with incredibly interesting premises and delivering on them every single time, and Malaj is no exception. Something Lee does especially well with his characters is that he often will go out of his way to reveal weaknesses or even actively inflicts downsides on himself in order to justify bigger asks later down the line. It's a really useful play technique that I intend to go into more detail about in future additions, but if there's no reason it can't be used now as well! Definitely look to him if you want to see one of the many, many different ways that the game can be played at a very high level. Really hope you've been enjoying all of these my friend. I consistently look forward to your comments!
Great inspiration here. Love the manifestations from Ariadine (as I've said before), especially that last one... though when Lethal-Butterfly-Greg was asking for it, I really thought you might turn it down for being too big. Though after hearing your explanation at the end (wanting him to get more benefit from the Familiar Face) it makes perfect sense. As for the other characters, I totally loved the Warhammer vibes from Bertram. The purity seals made me think of a 40k inquisitor, though given his lack of laser weapons, a Warhammer Fantasy witch hunter might actually be the more fitting comparison. Either way, great stuff. It was probably the first time I've seen an Enclave character who didn't really do any problem solving at all, and just spent an entire session gunning down heretics... which aside from being very entertaining, I think also gave me a bit of insight into how combat-heavy missions should run, so that’s much appreciated. Lastly, Tiberius' origami waypoint / by the wayside combo at the end was just brilliant. A really cool way of getting out of that situation, which really showcased the Wanderer's versatility. Also, his accent was amazing.
A brilliant breakdown! Couldn't agree more about everything you said. It's so funny, you were asking for something more combat heavy and then this mission happened -- definitely the best pure combat showcase we've had among the actual plays so far! Now that you've seen it do you have a better idea of how longer-form combat works in Enclave? I'm sure you'll still have questions, and I definitely still want to do a more committed combat mission soon, but hopefully this gives you more of a base to work off of! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I've started really looking forward to your comments and can't wait to hear more going forward
@@robbylavagames Yes, I definitely feel like I understand the combat better after this. That was the thing that seemed to me like it would be the trickiest thing to manage with a diceless game, but you did a fantastic job running it, this is definitely a great example to learn from.
@@reiteration6273 Fantastic! I'll make sure to have more examples going forward.
Great episode. In particular, I really loved all the examples of Manifestation from Ariadine. Greg / Lethal Butterfly did a brilliant job demonstrating just how versatile that stat can be, and just how much flavour it's possible to add to a character by investing into it.
Couldn't agree more! Greg is a monster when it comes to magic, and I'm thrilled that he finally has a chance to showcase his mastery of it. Really glad you've been enjoying! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts.
🤩 awwww, thanks guys!
Just finished this one and going to be watching Part 2 soon, but first I wanted to say that these are some really great characters. They're all fantastic examples of just how much freedom Enclave gives players to be creative in character design. Also, as an aside, I find it quite funny that Ray said she discarded a character concept for being too similar to Kozuki Momonosuke from One Piece... Only to then play an amazon warrior woman who knows nothing about men and when she finally meets one, mistakes him for a woman. Considering One Piece has an entire island filled with characters fitting that description, it seems the attempt at avoiding a One Piece reference wasn’t altogether successful. 😂
Heheheh could have fooled me! I know nothing about One Piece. But Ray is a fantastic character creator, and I've seen him remix worlds and ideas before in so many creative ways. Totally agree with you though that this mission was a great showcase of how versatile character creation can be in Enclave, despite being so simple. Hope you enjoyed part one!
OH MY GOD I DID, DIDN'T I HOW DID I DO THAT BY ACCIDENT?!
Would've loved to be able to watch this live, but alas, time zones are my enemy.
Same.
No problem at all! Hopefully I find some time in future to do things at a more conducive point of the day for you. Hope you enjoyed watching it in post!
@@robbylavagamesjust 2 hours earlier may do the trick for me! But unfortunately, 2-3 am streams are a bit late.
@@tomasstanek2982 I'll make sure we get some earlier ones in after the new baby
(I'm David aka detour aka Crow) I loved playing Enclave! So glad it was my introduction to live role-playing games and I'm so excited to play again
I'm still in shock that THIS was your first time playing ANY ttrpg. Just unbelievable Detour, you knocked it out of the park.
Absolutely amazing time
You played *SO* well.
CRACKED AF
That's funny after I saw that😂😂
Pardon the occasional audio/visual issues friends! Still working on this format -- in time I'm sure we'll perfect it.
Re: 5:10 I'm curious to know if there's a particular reason in the lore for why wanderers have magic fiddles specifically, as opposed to any other instrument. For example, would it be plausible for a wanderer character to have acquired a magic flute instead, with the same mechanical benefits as the fiddle? Or would it make more sense for a flute-playing wanderer to choose to take two common items and have their flute be one of those?
Exceptional question! The reason for fiddles over flutes is mostly a matter of general theming, since when I was reviewing the grounding for the class I knew I wanted to give them an instrument and that was the one that seemed to come up most. That being said, yes you can absolutely reskin your fiddle as a flute! I think it makes fine sense for it to keep the magical property in its new form, and that's the main thing you want to preserve when reskinning. Additionally, in the next expansion class gear rosters will be expanded, I think it's quite possible that the wanderer will be getting another instrument option then as well.
@@robbylavagames Awesome, that's great to know!
Loved the demo snippet!
Thanks! It was SUPER fun.
This sounds really cool, already backed on KS. RPG veteran since the late 70s. Since it's a multi-genre world, I think for the "teleportation" to each session's location to work, the character needs to inhabit the world. Your character might be a space marine, but the teleport won't work if you try to use it with your battle suit to jump into the old west. Nevertheless, a space marine with only a six-shooter would be fun to imagine! Similarly, a spell-using character would be limited in what magic items and components she might bring into such a world. Then there is the question of whether you want/need to blend into the world you're travelling in. I'm sure your system has all this carefully considered, I'm just riffing on how cool it could be to play.
Hey! Thank you so much for saying so my friend, I really appreciate you backing the project! Genre-mashing is one of the great joys of Enclave, and I actually highly encourage it! A space marine in a wild west setting is A-Ok with me, but the Conduit needs to be careful when designing the mission to ensure that tech differentials like what you describe don't dramatically warp it. That being said, designing missions like this can be *real* tough, so I don't begrudge anyone who wants to stick with theme-appropriate settings. And some playgroups also want to keep things cohesive (like "We want all characters and mission locations to be medieval high fantasy"), which is also totally fine and extremely doable. Thanks for taking the time to watch! I can't wait to hear what you do with the game once it's out.
@robbylavagames my next campaign is going to be themed on Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," and will involve traveling up a mysterious river whilst trying to stave off madness caused by the horrors one encounters. It's set in a fantasy world, so it won't take advantage of the Enclave, but I want to mine your system for theater of the mind adventuring. Maybe a campaign after that will be with the Enclave. It does sound really cool!
@@SoloBattles Mate that sounds SO sick, I love the idea. And totally -- use any piece of the system you like! If you do decide to use The Enclave itself in one of your sessions going forward, I'd love to hear how it goes!
@@robbylavagames I also will let you know how it works melded with the RPG I'm planning on running, which is Cairn plus some bits of other systems.
@@SoloBattles Please! I'd love to hear a review.
Have still to finish more than the character creation, but this looks like a fun game. Very interested to see where this goes.
Fantastic! If you find time to finish it I'd love to hear your thoughts.
This promo looks so cool!!!
Thank you so much! I'm really pleased with how it turned out
