ALBATROSS
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 31 ต.ค. 2009
My names Jack Plummer and with the power of books and the internet I’ve been learning all I can about sailboats and how to care for them properly. Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to live on a sailboat and Here it is, she’s a 53 foot LOA Ted brewer designed ketch from 1979 and she’s going to go around the world someday.
I’m going to go over and repair or upgrade every square inch of the vessel to ensure seaworthiness over the next few years (mostly alone), but with the occasional help of some amazing people. These videos are mostly to see what I’ve done already, how things were completed, and eventuality I’ll shift into making travel videos as I sail it up and down the east coast for work and to charter it out so I can share the joys of offshore sailing in exotic locations such as the Bahamas and Caribbean with others! Thanks so much for watching!

While stripping the engine room completely for renovation, I discovered a massive rotten hole in the bulkhead needing repair. After the repair I decided to do 4 coats of total boat gel coat (3 coats without wax, last coat with wax.) then decided that wasn’t good enough so put 3 more coats of west systems brand epoxy With the 207 special clear hardener. This brings back some good memories of engineless sailing haha
@@ryancocks7178 we’ve been through a lot! Haha
👍
This reminds me of a story I loved about a desert community in the australian outback who apparently had a car with no engine.. They would push it out on the highway, get a tow into town ..hang out for a while .. then push it back on the highway the other way and get a tow back home. 😁 Albatross is already looking great... She is a gorgeous boat. Thanks for the vids I'm enjoying them a lot.
I wonder if those aussies could get away with getting a cheap triple A membership and abusing it like I have with boat US 😂
@@JACKintheBIRD Wellllll.... technically your previous engine "did have a mechanical failure" (and "joined the choir invisibule" to keep the theme going).
I think I remember that being on a show...either Black As or the Bush Mechanics.
@@glenndavis479 Nice! I heard it driving on the Nullarbor in the 90's.. Hope it's true.
This was a good day. Not only did I find your posting this evening but into deep kept me going this morning. I had caught video last time and thought that there was a little bit of Monty Python Influence, make's your video more entertaining. Watching the Albatross under sail makes you appreciate the ancient Mariners courage who set off from Spain across the Atlantic and they thought the Earth was flat and they could fall off the edge of the ocean.
@@donblythe3766 I love me some Monty Python, my brother and I were huge on those movies growing up. When I was halfway through the bridge tender finally responded to say “can you speed it up a little? You’re Taking forever”. I wanted to respond to him in a Monty python way but wasn’t brave enough. Maybe next time… Thanks for watching our videos Don!
that was an epic sail, man! Glad I could help you get started. Can’t wait to see the full restoration of ALBATROSS ⛵️
@@Captain_MarvinFlores thank you my brother!
Great video. Can’t wait to see the engine installation and see the yard you’re working and living at. Cheers mate
Thank you!
This is an interesting video on the high maintenance of a tick deck. I didn't realize that it needed to be re coated every 3 months in the hot weather Florida. Speaking of Florida, what did you do to protect the boat when the hurricanes came through this year
@@donblythe3766 yea! It really depends on where you are in the world but I’ve noticed if I don’t do a varnish topcoat and deck sealant every 3 months, it starts to deteriorate on me! It’s very labor intensive but not too bad if you enjoy it and keep up with it on a scheduled routine! So I actually left the boat on the hard this hurricane season while I went up to work in NY fixing and chartering boats. I got lucky that the hurricane didn’t get close to the yard I’m in. But it’s strapped down tight anyways and is in a protected area. Near Stuart FL
@@JACKintheBIRD yes I remember that you were on your way to New York to work for the summer and I'm glad your boat was safe while you were away.
I'm a yacht electrician in south florida, let me know if you ever need help with anything :)
@@premitive1 will do! I appreciate that! I’ve installed a complete victron system and rewired just about everything I could get my hands on! So far so good! But when I instal the engine I might definitely have some questions for you about isolating the starting battery from the lithium bank! I’m heading to indiantown for the rest of the refit!
this is cleanest ive ever seen that done. incredible job
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Enjoy your meditating
It’s a tie between varnish and riding motorcycles. Cant think of too many other hobbies that bring so much joy. Thanks for watching!
G’day Jack from Downunder. Subbed today and went back to the beginning. I admire you for taking on the refit of a beautiful old 70’s ketch. Can you tell us a bit more about both yourself and the Albatross ? What’s your background, and where are you intending to sail in her when she’s finished ? Cheers ! Mach Buffett
Appreciate you subscribing! I haven’t decided yet if I’ll talk too much about myself (always wanted to just focus on the boat) but I’ll try to incorporate more of the boats story into the next video!
i havent picked up if this is your first boat or not but doing an incredible job so far fixing, upgrading and modernizing her so fast.
Thank you! Yea I haven’t really explained too much about my background or anything because the channel is more for my boat and not about myself, But it’s my second boat, and I’ve been in the industry for about a decade working around boats and living on one for about 10 years too. I appreciate your words!
So I’ve got to redo the prop, shaft, cutlass bearing, and bottom paint, so I decided to take it to a yard to finish the refit! Next video will probably be my engineless journey to the boatyard. So you’ll see some sailing footage soon! Not sure if Gus will be in the Indiantown area or not but I’ll be blowing his phone up with lots of technical questions when I’m installing the new engine!
Cant wait to see that
It is nice to see this update of your progress restoring the Albatross to its original layout. I hope you have a video when you install the engine that you bought at the Miami Boat Show. I'm guessing you're waiting for Gus to come back with his boat to help you with the winch of the new motor into your boat. Maybe when Gus is back you guys can set sail, I'd love to see The Albatross under full sail with drone views that Gus is so good at doing. Bahamas there you go.
how big is the boat , looked pretty big along side Bella .
She’s a 45 footer model! But measured 53 feet overall with the bowsprit and everything!
Thought she looked fairly big , nice boat good luck with your update .
That looks great! Even doing it yourself, those supplies from total boat are spendy!
Thanks for your reply. I look forward to seeing your progress. I ran across a TH-cam channel called Animagraffs in which one of the videos was how a 16th century explorer sailing ship was constructed from the ship framing to the rigging. Interestingly names of today's sailboats use some of the same names. He even shows how the term Knot came to be. Looking forward to your next posting.
I wondered how you were going to get those fuel tanks in there. A lot of muscle power.. Can you give us a little history of the sailboat. When it was made, what kind of trip hays it been on, that would be interesting. Is the albatross a fiberglass boat and who was the manufacturer of the boat.
She’s got a very interesting history and some great stories which I’ll save for a future video But she’s a 1978 Ted brewer designed CCC 45. Originally, a number were built of wood as the PACIFIC 42 (LOA:43.5'). Then built of fiberglass with a slight stern extension as PACIFIC 45, BREWER 45, CCC 45, THREE SEAS 45, WEATHERLY 45. I’m not 100% on who the builders were, but “Cory’s custom carpentry” comes up often enough when I try to do any digging. My model is pure fiberglass almost an inch thick just about everywhere (thicker below the water line) which I’m very happy about. Whoever built it did a fantastic job.
Outstanding, can't wait to see the next!
Nice old girl. Cant wait to see get Gus pulling lines.
Me either!
Ahhhhh man! He was sweating it for a minute!! Ha got em!!😂
Very nice video of the restoration of your sail boat. I like the accompanying music. Kind of makes you want to watch the video more than once. Of course I found you because I am an in too deep fan and you have made an impressive contribution to Gus's Adventures.
Thank you so much, And Gus is always helping me with my stuff too! Least I can do is pitch in here and there when he needs a hand!
@@JACKintheBIRD as the song says '"I get by with a little help from my friends" you and Gus share a love of the sea and are willing to put in a lot of effort to keep your boats sea worthy. And I admire that. Plus it's a good time.
Awesome work, and an incredible attention to detail on this restoration. When I see a licensed Captain going through the trouble of perfecting every aspect of his ship, I know his above deck skills are going to be just as perfect. I look forward to charting the Albatross as soon as she's ready!! 🤩 “Let me square the yards, while we may, old fellow, and make a fair breeze of it homeward,”
@@exodusexpeditionarytrucks4420 thank you so much! I’m a big fan of your truck builds too! You all do a great job over there on land!
