MV Chelan (May 14th, 2024) #washingtonstate #chelan #ferry #pugetsound #sanjuanislands
Washington State Ferries is the largest ferry system in the United States, operating twenty-one vessels in the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands. All together, the vessels, ranging in size from 64-car ferries to 202-car ferries, carry 18.2 million riders per year.
The MV Chelan, the vessel featured in this video, is an Issaquah class ferry capable of holding 124 cars and 1200 passengers. She is 328'' 0" in length, 78' 8" wide, and has a 16' 9" draft. The Chelan has two GE 7 FDM-12 Diesel engines that together generate 5000 horsepower. She can travel at 16 Knots. The name Chelan comes from the Chelan language Tsill-ane, meaning "deep water." The tribe lived along Lake Chelan, which is very deep. A city, county and river also bear the name.
The Chelan was designed and built in 1981 by Marine Power and Equipment in Seattle, WA. She started her career on the Edmonds/Kingston run alongside fleet mate Yakima, but was removed from the run as traffic outpaced her. The Chelan became a spare vessel, filling in for her five sisters when they were out of service and often worked in the San Juan Islands during the summer. Since receiving SOLAS certification in 2006, the Chelan is most often found on the Sidney BC run during the peak season, and serving the San Juan Islands domestically during the off-peak season. Since the pandemic, the Chelan has transitioned to serving the San Juan Islands domestically, full time. The Chelan is 43 years old, the tenth oldest vessel in the fleet.
In this video, the Chelan is seen on the 5:30 a.m. sailing from Anacortes to Orcas Island and the 6:45 a.m. sailing from Orcas Island to Shaw Island, Lopez Island, and Anacortes. Appearances by the MV Tillikum, MV Yakima, MV Puyallup, and MV Samish are included.

13:14 so dang gorgeous
I love this. I ride this route once in a great while. The main route that I ride is the Edmonds-Kingston in the Central Sound.
The MV Puyallup is the main Edmonds-Kingston route.
yes it is it was probably having maintenance because they probably couldn’t do it in seattle but only in anacortes
@@MarkYav I figured it was up there for maintenance, because the jumbos bring too much wake for the island's so I know the MV Puyallup was there parked. I ride the Edmonds-Kingston route more than I ride the other routes.
oh and also i went on this ferry to orcas on friday may 24 to orcas was the yakima ferry and then back to anacortes was the chelan and then i went to orcas again on august 29 which was a thursday and when the ferry was going to orcas it was the Yakima ferry and then back to anacortes was the chelan
i was on this exact vessel on labor day because i went on the 9:05 am ferry from anacortes to Friday Harbor
The only soul Evergreen Class in the WSF fleet today.
Indeed 😢
hopefully it doesnt retire soon
24:15 what was that other ferry called
MV Samish for the 9:25 a.m. scheduled Anacortes to Lopez Island, Shaw Island, Orcas Island, and Friday Harbor.
Just heard on king5 that the elwha and the klahowya is being towed to Ecuador in south America 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
Postponed due to issues with the towing equipment.
how did you manage to wake up extremely early?
I love early mornings!
@@aholtzphotography Thats cool ive stayed up the entire night about a couple weeks ago but all of a sudden i fell asleep in the middle of the day LOL
1:38:48 is that mount constitution?
I think so 🤔
is there more walk on passengers on the 9:30 am ferry from anacortes to friday harbor or are there more people on the 8:30 am ferry from anacortes to friday harbor?
why does this vessel go slower than the other ones
The Tillikum is an older vessel and is slower as a result. Because of the Tillikum's slower speed, it can't keep the schedule on most routes.
@@aholtzphotography what would go wrong if it went quick like the other ferries even if its the oldest?
@@aholtzphotography also that could be valid
very fun ferry ride i went on this ferry ride in april 14 this year and we went on this exact same time ferry that left anacortes but it was 50 minutes delayed
Were you working at anacortes in the ferry which was stationed there ? This year !!
no
@@MarkYav Okkk, if you were there I could’ve been seen you
@@laperousse2138 yea i went on this ferry 3 weeks before this exactly was filmed and when i went on april 14 it was very sunny and clear
@@MarkYav yeah You’re right , it was sunny I was going there
So beautiful. 😍
Glad you liked it! 😁
Adorable! Those eyes! 😍
Agreed, they are so cute!
i have a model of the Chimacum i built out of foam board
I know, I've seen it on your channel 👏
my favorite thing in the world is the ferries
They are pretty neat!
Very gorgeous sunrise
Glad you liked it!
there was the chelan and the kaleetan in san juans exactly in this video? i thought they use 3 boats in san juans
Typically there are four boats on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands run, excepting the winter weekend schedule (three boats). We are also supposed to have five boats on the summer schedule although that is unlikely to be the case until 2030 at the earliest. When this video was filmed we had the Tillikum, Kaleetan, Chelan, and Samish in the islands (it was winter weekend so the Tillikum wasn't running).
is there an earlier ferry to orcas island than the 7:40 am ferry?
Wonderful video filming Tillikum from departing Yakima. Both beauties!! ❤
Glad you liked it!
were there any cars on the ferry when it leaves anacortes 4:05 am or are there mostly semi trucks?
Mostly commercial vehicles on the 4:05 a.m.
where was the samish going from friday harbor
At 5:20 or at 1:22:48?
@@aholtzphotography at 5:20
@@MarkYav 8:05 a.m. scheduled Friday Harbor to Anacortes.
@@aholtzphotography was this their winter or fall schedule?
@@MarkYav Fall schedule.
6:09 did it pass lopez island ferry terminal or not yet?
Yes, 6:09 is in Wasp Pass; already west of the Lopez, Shaw, and Orcas terminals.
👏👏👏👏❤
Love seeing the ferries lit up at night. The lights on the water is beautiful. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed
why was the car deck so empty?
For one thing it was December. For another, it was a Lopez-only round-trip.
@@aholtzphotography ok i guess that makes sense thx
Also probably not many people visit Lopez
I heard it’s kind of boring there
@@MarkYav I haven't explored Lopez much, so I'm not sure 😁
What a mighty little ferry. After seeing the larger ferries, what a treat! Thank you!
It really is a mighty little ferry! And soon (hopefully) Guemes Island will be served by a new all electric ferry.
Very cool! Love seeing the ferry pics along with the sounds of their horns! ❤📢
Glad you enjoyed!
Another great one! Keep it up. By the way I am in the apprentice mate program, hoping to be an officer with WSF in 2-3 years. Maybe i’ll see you out there when I get up to the san juans for pilotage.
Congratulations, that's exciting! Maybe I will see you out there. Thanks for watching.
So beautiful 😍 thank you.
Thank you for watching! 😁
A beautiful bird. Thank you for sharing.
Indeed! Thank you for watching.
Nice and beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing so wonderful video & big liuke
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
Beautiful!!!
Glad you enjoyed!
Sorry about the wind noise! You may wish to keep your sound off for this video, except from 27:20 to 34:05 and from 34:36 to 34:50.
Thanks for making these! Keep up the great filming.
Thank you! 😄
Video coming soon!
Where did the Shaw Island dock sign go?
I would say that the wood might have rotted IDK it’s been some time since I last went on the inter island vessel
I'm not sure 🤔. When I rode the Yakima a couple days ago, it was back up.
She watches so gracefully and he is just such a regal protector. Just stunning.
They are a beautiful pair!
Beautiful. T2, the rain, just beautiful. Very calming. Thank you!
Amazing how they brave the elements!
Very sweet. Really enjoying their seeds! ❤
Thank you for watching!
Those tiny little boats towing giant ferries. Wow!
Impressive the power of tugs!
The twin stacks with the gold stripes are so striking. I enjoy the sailings so much and the docking and departure are also fun to see! Love the horns. I appreciate the labels. Thank you!
Glad you like them!
Gray Heron Sound 2023
Very nice quality. Even at low light! The music at 20:00 was unnecessary though.
Thank you. I agree about the music. Trying to eliminate it in future videos.
@@aholtzphotography No problem. May I ask if you can please critique a few of my recent uploaded videos please.
The juvie is adorable! Love seeing into the life of these sweet birds. One of my favorites and I love them!! Thank you for the informative description. Thank you!
You are so welcome! 😁
Beautiful Heron. Lovely video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful! What a wonderfully relaxing trip. Sunrise is so gorgeous. Not being from the area, the labels were so helpful. Excellent and informative description. Well done and thank you! 👏
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video! 😁
The labels at 19:07 are so cool. What program did you use?
This was the first video I tried labelling the passages and islands like that. I used Adobe Premiere Pro but it was incredibly time consuming. I hope to find a program that will make labeling more efficient.
@@aholtzphotography Thank you. Yeah I bet it can be a tedious process.
I really like these camera shots of the trucks onboarding the ferry. Thank you so much, A Holtz!
Glad you liked it! 😁
It’s insane that you actually managed to wake up that early to capture this! I would be beyond exhausted!😆
It wasn't easy, but so worth it. I had a hard time staying awake the rest of the day. 😅
