      Thank you for the question. Yes you can replace the media inside the tank. You will want to remove the gravel and media that is currently in there. The amount of media depends on the size of the tank. If you have a 32k water softener for instance then you will want to put about a pound of gravel and one cubic foot of media. If you buy from amazon, you can contact the seller and tell them what you have and they can send you the correct amount so there is no guesswork. Don't forget to ask for gravel as well. I hope this answered your question and was helpful.

    Out of curiosity, given that you have been in business for a long time, do you believe that door-to-door sales is the best method to increase sales volume?

    • @jimtum1
      @jimtum1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question, thank you for asking. It may depend on your area. I lived in the county and so homes were not really near one another and on water wells, though I did for the most part go door to door and drop off my business card since most people were at work during the day when I went by. I also did videos like this one, however, the title is what is most important. I lived in Decatur Texas at the time and the title of one of my videos was "Water Softener Sales Decatur Texas." I did my video on the type of water softeners I sold. If you do a TH-cam video, it comes up first on the page before the organic information. You will want to use what people search for in the title of your videos. Do as many videos as you can, all you need is a phone and a TH-cam channel. My suggestion would be to buy some postcards from an inexpensive card company and put them on the doors in new neighborhoods since they won't have water softeners yet. You'll also want to advertise R/O systems as well. If I were to go door to door, it would be in the evening when people were home, and you could just introduce yourself and give them your card unless they weren't busy and asked you to come in. All in all, I feel like videos are the most effective because the customer gets to know you before they even meet you in person and it allows them to get info without being pressured by some salesman. I know I gave you more information than you asked for, I just wanted to hit as many sides as possible to help you be more successful. I hope I was able to help.

    I have a question about well water and iron bacteria, if you know how to get rid of it and the filter arrangement, I'd appreciate any advice. We started having iron bacteria in the well a year ago. We've lived in the house for 14 years... it was new to us. We don't know what caused the sudden outbreak. Had local well companies come out and they said they didn't suspect anything wrong with the well casing. We did several liquid bleach treatments and ended up adding a bunch of filters, iron/greensand with permanganate, I forget what the one is called, id have to see if I can find the paperwork but I think they said some kind of ion type filter. We already had a water softener. For about a year it seemed to clear up until spring rolled back around and we did several bleach treatments again with no luck, it would clear up and come right back, so I bought a chlorine injection system for the well head. The water is coming out orange, im guessing from the chlorine oxidizing the iron, but the bacteria comes back as well. Do you have any experience with iron bacteria and what order we should have our filters? I was hoping the chlorine injection would clear it up, but maybe I need to do another shock chlorination first? Thank you for your time. I hope this post made sense lol

    You left out water pressure, I think. 60 or more PSI. On the softener I have I ran a whole house filter upstream for 8 years with no problem. The softener performed well but the resin inside needed changing. I did that and was back in business. That was 3 years ago. The valve on my softener takes the chance of getting any salt in the house while brineing operation is in progress out of the picture. But i started getting salt for some reason. Contractors have started a huge housing addition up the street from me and going online with water being supplied upstream which could have lowered my pressure. I had never had this problem before. I'll buy put A guage on the supply and Check the pressure. I have bypassed the whole house filter to see if it may the problem. But no change. The softener was purchased from a Big Box store. I guess its time to do a valve rebuild. Unless the pressure is below 60PSI.

    • @LowCostWaterSofteners
      @LowCostWaterSofteners 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For a water softener to regen correctly it needs at least 40psi, pressure is most needed in a filter rather than a softener however, it does matter some. Allow me to ask a few questions; it may be time again to change the resin again, take note that rebuiding the valve should not have anything to do with pressure loss. At this point it seems like it may be the resin, I know this is not much help but if you get it figured out please let me know.

    I have the Fleck 5600 and have had no issues (over 10 years). The last regeneration my cold sink water had foamy salt and the salt bin of the softener had about 10 -12 inches of water above the salt level. What would be the "fix" on this. Thank you in advance.

    • @LowCostWaterSofteners
      @LowCostWaterSofteners 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My first guess would be that someone got up at night and used a faucet or toilet well it wasn’t regeneration so they got salt water in the lines. I would check to see if if it ever happens again likely not or the timer is off on the valve. Do you want to set it to the right time by pushing the red button, and then adjusting the wheel.

    • @LowCostWaterSofteners
      @LowCostWaterSofteners 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Put the softener into brine draw and Remove the tube attached to the Venturi, put your finger over the hole and see if you have suction. If you have suction then the problem may be your brine tube that goes to the bottom of the tank. Take it out, remove the black clip and pull the tube out. Reconnect the tube to the Venturi and see if you have suction, if not make sure the float and black plunger looking thing are not stuck to the brine body. If no suction after that then you’ll need to clean the little screen in the bottom. When replacing, make sure the float is not stuck to the top of the brine body. If that doesn’t work please get back to me

      I would go into the settings and make sure your hardness isn’t set on zero. The other problem I found one time, is on the out bound side of the water softener there’s a little wire that goes into the top and inside there is an impeller and if the impeller is stuck and it won’t turn and tell the machine, how many gallons have gone to that may be the other problem

    • @LowCostWaterSofteners
      @LowCostWaterSofteners 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You will have to put the softener in bypass then press and hold the regen button until it cycles once. The pressure will be off and you will have to take care in taking the black clips off and disconnecting the bypass from the softener. Then look inside the out hole and see if the impeller is stuck, if so remove it and clean it and put it back and you should be ok

    Hey Jim, great video! I figured most of these things could be repaired. Lol. They seem fairly straightforward. I'm having an issue with a five-year-old GE GXSH40V00. I live in Central Florida, and the water here is extremely hard and full of chlorine. Anyway, my problem is that the beads are running through my plumbing and gumming up the works. I pulled the head unit off and checked the top and bottom distributors for holes. They're fine. I replaced the three O-rings while I was in there, thinking that would solve my problem. It didn't. After seeing this video, could it be the beads have worn down and are actually getting out through the distributors? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

      @LowCostWaterSofteners 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment. You can see below that people have had salt in their water in the morning after using water in the home while the softener was in regen mode. Not all models come with a bypass during brine mode. You may want to put your softener in brine mode and run some water in the house for a few minutes, then taste the water to see if you have salty water and then you will know for sure if your softener has a bypass mode during brine draw.

      Thank you for reaching out, you may want to try this method- Hold the Select button for several seconds, until your display changes to the model code (ex. RH42). Press the Up arrow to display 'SoS' on the screen: Press the Select button once to restart the display board. You can then re-customize the programming accordingly.

    Will a sediment pre filter remove manganese or does only the softener beads and salt do that?

    In my case, the motor turn on and the water goes out for 3 seconds and then the motor stops, leaving the tank full of water... do you think can be the rotir disk?

    • @LowCostWaterSofteners
      @LowCostWaterSofteners ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alejandro, I'm sorry for the delay. If you are referring to the beginning, the motor turns to the brine fill. If the tank is full of water then the float inside the brine well (big round tube next to tank) is keeping from filling. You can put the softener in brine mode which is the second step, you should have water coming out of the drain line and the water inside the tank should be decreasing. If not, then you will need a new Rotor Disk kit. This kit amzn.to/46szsgK is if you have 5 screws on top of the valve, this one amzn.to/3tCLAgD is if you have 8 screws on top of the valve. Let me know how it goes

      Put the water softener in regeneration and watch and see if you have water coming out of the drain line. It will depend on what kind of softener you have

    All of the water softeners I have owned would go into bypass when regenerating, so hard water was the only thing that would come out until the process was completed. I have had water softeners since 1980, and never had salt water come out of them.

    Will the motor still turn if the disc is bad? I'm at my wit's end. I was getting error codes and the drain line was constantly running. I cleaned the venturi, replaced all of the O rings and gasket. Error codes were gone but then now I'm getting water in the salt tank up to 6. I replaced the motor switch and the cover over the rotor disc. I can manually regenerate and the motor moves to each position but I am still not getting soft water. Plumber came out and misdiagnosed then sent another tech who stated my unit was just too old and I needed to replace it. I can't afford to do so right now so any advice on salvaging would help.

    • @LowCostWaterSofteners
      @LowCostWaterSofteners ปีที่แล้ว

      @kellykotarski7982, thank you for reaching out. To answer your question, yes the motor will turn if the rotor disc is bad. On few occasions it will seize but that is not really the norm. According to what you wrote in here, you have not replaced the rotor disc. If you have 5 screws holding the valve down, you will need to buy the 3/4" kit. Here it is: amzn.to/3Eej33m If you have 8 screws to hold it down, then you will need the 1" kit. This is it: amzn.to/3Pdk1D1 Try replacing the rotor disc and then allow the motor to run on its own, if it won't then keep pressing the regen button until the micro switch works correctly. If this didn't help, please follow up with me

    I was a little concerned about the mixed reviews, but I used it last year and hooked it up again this year and it was great th-cam.com/users/postUgkx-izdrK3eF-HMvjzeBOxToD6Fx-4ulJUh . I couldn't get my 10' Intex pool above 76 degrees the year prior and last year I got it to 90 and had to put ice in it. This worked so well! I have just 1 mat hooked up to a 1,000 GPH Intex pump and it makes a significant reduction in the flow rate coming back into the pool, but that is to be expected with how far the water has to travel through the mat.

    • @jimtum1

      Thank you for asking. It tricked me too. When putting the filter in, you’ll have to feel around and make sure the filter is seated properly. After a while you’ll get accustomed to the feel
