Ex WLB/ÖBB 92.2271 steam engine, belonging to the MLV club in the Waldviertel area of Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) is being maintained in Zwettl. Approximately five times a year it is steaming through this hilly, foresty landscape in northern Austria. Worth a visit!

Passenger traffic on railway branch lines north-east of Vienna between Marchfeld and Weinviertel, from Gänserndorf to Bad Pirawarth, Groß Schweinbarth to Obersdorf - a left-over of a once much bigger network of lines criss-crossing the countryside between the Czech border and Vienna. But also their times seem to be over. By December 2019 the line is as it seems about to close.

      Stimmt halt. Die Bahn ist wichtig für die Dörfer, und auch irgendwie schon ein Markenzeichen für die Gegend geworden. Und ein Bus ist nicht besser, der fährt nämlich auch mit Diesel

    Hans, they need a driver for each engine. The thing with the Krumpen: The state of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) took over basically all the secondary branch lines a few years ago. Many of them were shut already, and having a transport policy like in the 1960s in the UK in place, NÖ shut down most of the rest as well. The Mariazellerbahn got actually upgraded with new shiny trains - mainly as a show off project - and because it's so iconic that you can hardly shut it I guess. There will be just three 1099 left in traffic for nostalgic trains, whereas the others got sold to scrap, as they sell off everything else they can find (eg. tracks of closed lines) to make a bit of money to cover the financial losses they are making. Of the Krumpen, there are about 3km left now, but without traffic whatsoever. So this video is definitely a historic one.

    Is the 1099:s MU capable or do they require a second engineer in the rear unit? And why was the Krumpen shut down? Low traveler numbers? And why didn't they electrify it so it could be used properly by all equipment, would probably make a good addition to local trains around St Pölten?

    London junction 'back to the 50s' retro style. The cyclists in this video are all seem young and fit but already have a frightened look on their face. Imagine kids and grandmas riding amongst trucks and buses. I wonder if a dutch roundabout would have been possible here. Not sure.

    Cyclists hold up traffic. Don't cycle in the middle of the road. (It's ok for standing there - for minutes/hours - as a motorist.) etc... BTW, is there any comparison about the air pollution? (Before strike, during strike, after strike...)

    Well, the 77 at that time round St Poelten, I'm not sure if they really were running on the branch lines. Rather class 93.13/14s (Austrian 378) were typical there, at least after the war and until the end of steam. The carriages are typical for Austria after the war, called 'Spantenwagen', they were rebuilt from old Austrian carriages. Donnerbuechsen were the German pendants, many stayed in Austria after the war. But in this film there is no real Donnerbuechse to see.

    Excellent video and great shots too! I am writing a book about my mother. She took the train from Rainfeld to St. Polten before heading into Seidorf, Niederschlesien back in 1941. It looks like the locomotive is a Class 77 with the passenger cars being Donnerbuchse? Is this correct? If so, they are nicknamed the "Thunderboxes" because of the amount of noise they made while rolling down the rail - rolling down the rail........
