Hurricane Journal
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 มี.ค. 2023
Hurricane Journal, founded by hurricane chaser Jason D. Randolph in 2020, is an organization dedicated to tracking, chasing, and journaling landfalling hurricanes primarily in the United States. The documenting of hurricanes in the field is referred to as Intercept Missions.
Hurricane Idalia - Intercept Mission 8
The Idalia Mission took place primarily in Perry, Florida on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Idalia was a Category 3 hurricane that struck the Big Bend/ Gulf Coast area of Florida. It brought significant storm surge and damaging winds to numerous communities. Idalia is the only known major hurricane to make landfall in this area of Florida.
The active part of the Idalia mission lasted 4 hours. We experienced erratic and turbulent winds (likely because of the decaying core structure) and several powerful mesovortices. The most powerful and dramatic mesovortex was captured in the intercept mission. Damage around the town of Perry was significant.

Hurricane Ian - Intercept Mission 7
มุมมอง 145Kปีที่แล้ว
Intercept Mission 7 - The Ian Mission was the most dramatic mission to date. Ian was an incredibly powerful Category 4 hurricane that struck southwest Florida and made landfall at the exact same location as Hurricane Charley 18 years earlier. The Ian Mission took place in North Port, Florida, which had gusts of up to ~125 mph. Ian's post-landfall convective, hot tower burst enhanced the destruc...
Hurricane Ida - Intercept Mission 6
มุมมอง 7Kปีที่แล้ว
The Hurricane Ida mission was filmed in Thibodaux, Louisiana on August 29, 2021. The mission objective was to capture the eyewall of Ida which was a success although we were in the western outer eyewall. Nevertheless, winds at our location officially gusted to 100 mph and possibly stronger. Not shown in the footage is the major damage sustained by most of the city. The modern infrastructure aro...
Hurricane Delta - Intercept Mission 5
มุมมอง 14Kปีที่แล้ว
Friday, October 9, 2020 - Footage of Hurricane Delta in Jennings, Louisiana. Delta was a weakening Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. Peak winds gusted to around 85 mph at my location in Jennings. Damage from Delta was minimal overall. Lake Charles was devastated by Hurricane Laura which hit just weeks prior and debris was still scattered around the city. Delta’s high...
Hurricane Irma - Intercept Mission 3
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
Sunday, September 10, 2017. Hurricane Irma was my second and final hurricane chase and documentation of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Footage was taken in Sarasota, Florida. However, the landfall of Irma occurred much further south of my location and the center of the hurricane passed to my east. Peak winds in my immediate area are estimated between 70 - 75 mph.
Hurricane Harvey - Intercept Mission 2
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
August 25th, 2017: Hurricane Harvey was my second hurricane chase in less than a year and after I chased Hurricane Matthew in Florida. Even though I knew Harvey would make landfall just to the north of my downtown Corpus Christi location, I decided to ride the ferocious hurricane out in the very sturdy downtown Holiday Inn. Winds occasionally gusted over hurricane force. Wind gusts topping out ...
Hurricane Matthew - Intercept Mission 1
มุมมอง 2.5Kปีที่แล้ว
Friday, October 7, 2016. Hurricane Matthew approached the east coast of Florida and threatened the first major hurricane landfall (at that time) in 11 years. Fortunately for Florida residents, Matthew never made landfall in the state. Its strongest winds stayed just offshore. Damage was minimal aside from significant flooding in places like St Augustine. I documented Matthew in west Cocoa, FL i...
Great footage! Thank you for sharing
🌀🎊Happy New Year🎊🌀 Hurricane Journal
I enjoyed the way you filmed this storm, no commentary, no constant camera movements 👍 even when your nerves got a little frayed! I’ll be on the look out for your next adventure 😊
AWESOME footage, Jason! You guys really got nailed in that parking lot. I'm glad everybody was OK and definitely understand what a scary situation that can be. Congrats on a great intercept!
Thank you! As I said later that day, these storms demand respect, regardless of the overall strength.
Whiteout incredible.
The only meaningful storm of 2022. Hurricane 🌀 season is dying. Wonder if even see one this year. We need rain bad. ! Nice job on the vid 👍
😭😱😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I use this every single night to sleep and have done for many years - thank you guys for keeping this one up as it’s the only consistent one my brain seems to turn off to. Truly appreciated!
85mph peak gust huh? That’s identical to what I’d estimate we had here in golden gate Florida from Ian last year only Ian brought little rain during this peak winds. Man were they ripping though, my neighbors huge tree got decapitated from the winds.
Yeah, we remained home in Cape Coral. Our neighborhood held up well. Most are still trying to get their roofs replaced over 8 months after the hurricane, but no flooding. It was a trip.
Really impressively strong, but fortunately for this location, the results were nowhere as catastrophic as what happened to places that were inundated by the storm surge.
I maybe crazy when i say this but like i live in Baltimore Maryland im actually hoping a hurricane like Ian will hit where i live and it's just so i can just sit by the window and watch the storm rage

I love how the comment section is filled with positivity and good vibes. Everyone is struggling here but we're all together here, safe. This feels like one well-knit family :)) Good Wishes to all, May you all make it big!
Think about it North port is 49 mile South of Fort Myers and look how bad it was
North of Ft Myers
My step mom said never again will she stay she lived inCape coral Fla I lived in Delray Beach Fla we were ready but it turned more west we didn't even get and wind
storm of a lifetime, hopefully wont have another like Ian.
From the Hampton there i was about 1.5 mile due west of where you were. Reach out if you want some after the storm pictures.
I think I may be one of the oddest people I know but those howling winds and whistling windows, I find the most relaxing sound... I'd go to sleep listening to that.
I want another one to just knock out the power for a week I slept like a damn baby. The generator took me back to the Army days 😊
I’m literally falling asleep listening to it 😂
yeah you sleep until there is a loud crack and another tree falls or someones fence comes apart and slams into your window coverings.

I was down in Rotonda west in Englewood Florida, the wind and rain were insane. We were in the eye wall for 8+ hours. Every mobile home park in the town and a lot of other things were completely destroyed. Luckily my apartment was spared but we took some flood damage
Wow....
That was a massive storm. I felt bad bc I was heading to Miami for a 10 day cruise and my hotel was full of evacuees snd their pets. They didn’t know what they would left after the storm and I’m like will my cruise be canceled. Yes it sounds awful and I flew in much earlier bc I didnt know the airports would be closed. I grew up on the coast in Clear Lake. I’ve been through many storms but these storms are just getting bigger and more devastating to endure. You can always replace towns and structures but you can never replace a life.
Absolutely INCREDIBLE footage, Jason! Congratulations on such an awesome intercept! It's amazing to get to see such a detailed video of IAN's impacts up in North Port.
Thanks so much, Michael! This is a very welcome compliment coming from a great veteran hurricane chaser! Hopefully I will see you out there in the field some day.
When will we see the extended video of Hurricane IAN in Port Charlotte, FL on TH-cam, greetings, how long time!
@@michaelgrullon7451 Hi, Michael. It's coming, I've been working on it quite a bit lately. Hopefully it will be done in the next few weeks.
Yea I like this one also without any ridiculous yelling or annoying music. Just blows my mind that now I know why in the spring of 2022 I couldn’t get anything to come to together to buy a house in Fort Myers. Everything I tried failed and I have great credit score and down payment….. THIS right here is WHY !!! God sure was looking out for me.
Wow, this is so cool and scary!!! It would be really fun if you are a pro at chasing hurricanes. Great footage! Thanks for posting.
Ian easily made landfall at least 15 if not 20 miles farther *south* than Charley! Ian hit Cape Coral directly head on, it's right side eyewall slamming Fort Myers Beach like a battering ram. And Fort Myers Beach got the full blast of the storm surge this time, too. Destroyed Plaka on the Beach, Cottage bar, The Whale, even Lani Kai sustained damage with both first floor bars washed away and the roof peeled off the Sun Deck.
Awesome intercept! What a monstrous storm
