Jack Harris, Yale University, “Measuring the knots and braids of non-Hermitian oscillators” It may seem unlikely that rich mathematical structures remain to be uncovered in classical harmonic oscillators. Nevertheless, oscillators that combine non-reciprocity and loss have provided a number of surprises in recent years. I will describe a collaborative effort (between my group and Nick Read’s gr...

Charles Kane, University of Pennsylvania, “Topology of the Fermi Sea” The Fermi Sea in a metal is a topological object characterized by an integer topological invariant called the Euler characteristic, x_F. In this talk we will argue that for a 2D fermi gas x_F is reflected in a quantized frequency dependent non-linear 3 terminal conductance that generalizes the Landauer conductance in D=1. We ...

Charles Kane, University of Pennsylvania, “Symmetry, Topology and Electronic Phases of Matter” Symmetry and topology are two of the conceptual pillars that underlie our understanding of matter. While both ideas are old, over the past several years a new appreciation of their interplay has led to dramatic progress in our understanding of topological electronic materials. A paradigm that has emer...

Charles Kane, University of Pennsylvania, “The Emergence of Topological Quantum Matter” Matter can arrange itself in the most ingenious ways. In addition to the solid, liquid and gas phases that are familiar in classical physics, electronic phases of matter with both useful and exotic properties are made possible by quantum mechanics. In the last century, the thorough understanding of the simpl...

Gianfranco Bertone, University of Amsterdam and Columbia University, “Gravitational Wave Probes of Dark Matter” I will start with an overview of the status of dark matter searches and of the prospects for uncovering its nature in the next decade. I will then focus on the interplay between dark matter, black holes, and gravitational waves, and discuss the prospects for characterizing and identif...

Tatyana Sharpee, Salk Institute - “Hyperbolic geometry and information acquisition in biological systems” Across different scales of biological organization, biological networks often exhibit hierarchical tree-like organization. For networks with such structure, hyperbolic geometry provides a natural metric because of its exponentially expanding resolution. I will describe how the use of hyperb...

Eugenio Coccia, Institute for High Energy Physics & Gran Sasso Science Institute, “The Einstein Telescope” Gravitational waves from the merging of a binary black hole system were detected in 2015 giving birth to a new way of studying our Universe. Moreover, in 2017 the correlations of the gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars with the rich electromagnetic counterparts ma...

Aaron Zimmerman, University of Texas at Austin “Gravitational waves and searching for the unexpected” The detection of gravitational waves has revealed an invisible side of the Universe. Observations of gravitational waves from black holes and neutron stars allow us to test our understanding of dynamical spacetime, study matter at extreme densities, and measure the expansion history of our Univ...

I’m a junior in college, just starting my journey into quantum mechanics. This lecture has been a wonderful find as most other lectures I try to watch require a more advanced understanding of the subject, while this one really allowed me to immerse myself in the topic. Thank you.
