Hello Darkness
มุมมอง 607ปีที่แล้ว
My first and only original song. Each week when I was getting my Guinness at the pub, I kept thinking to myself "Hello Darkness". Finally I sat down at the computer and the lyrics pretty much just came to me. It was a very weird feeling. "Hello Darkness (Ode to Darkness)" [1] Hello darkness my old friend I've come to drink with you again. In a pint glass is how you're served A perfect Guinness ...

I thoroughly enjoyed your literary and musical creation of 'Hello Darkness' which I have dubbed "The Guiness Song" !!!! I have been known to warble a note or two in a few too many Irish pubs, of course while imbibing in a Guiness or two !!! So, I have decided that this, your masterpiece, should be heard far and wide, so I have decided to learn it for performance !!!! I would like to credit the author when I finally perform it and would like to know your name and the year you penned it !!!! I hope this is agreeable to you !!! I can really have a lot of fun with this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it is perfect sung against an Irish Tin Whistle !!!!!!!Please let me know if this is OK with you !!!!!!!!!!Jimmy Mac (Jim McIlhinney)
Tim Jedlicka (formally from Chicago, now Indianapolis) - I wrote it in 2023. The only line I'm still struggling with is the last closing - can never decide if it should be "... and raise a pint of darkness" or "...and raise a pint of Guinness". They both seem to fit.
Well, both work !!!!! I would substantially do it the way it's written with maybe a few minor word tweeks to help with rolling it off the tongue.............primarily stylistic interpretations. I can forsee doing this at Guiness Glass Giveaway nights where they do specially engraved Guiness Glasses !!! Should be a crowd made in heaven for this song !!!!! I sing with several of the Irish Bands in the Philadelphia and Jersey Shore areas, so I should be able to get some mileage out of it !!! I'll let you know how it goes when I finally perform it !!!!! @@tjbonzo

Here is the transcript: When my counselor first asked me to give this speech, I was, let’s say, skeptical. I’m pretty much your typical goody-two-shoes, straight-A student, but at 6 AM, it is really hard to jump out of bed and go “yipee! English class!” So I was having a hard time coming up with three minutes worth of positive things to say about high school. A letter I got from the district a few weeks ago told me “You can talk about what Glenbard has provided you with, how you have changed since coming to Glenbard, and how high school has prepared you for the next step in your life.” What has Glenbard provided me with? sleep deprivation. How have I changed since coming to Glenbard? I’m a thousand times more stressed out than any middle schooler. How has high school prepared me for the next step in my life? Well, I’ve gotten really good at cramming for a test on about 3 hours of sleep - college ready! Snarkiness and sarcasm aside, however, Glenbard South has given me an opportunity that a lot of people never have, but so many desperately need -- the chance to interact with a variety of people who each have a different story to tell. Being around such true diversity, even as early as kindergarten and first grade, is what really sparked my desire to learn -- anything from the school stuff, like the difference between a virus and a retrovirus, or the life skills like how to write a resume, to things like the real reason my friend wears a scarf around her head, or why a different friend doesn’t celebrate Halloween. So what has Glenbard really provided me with? An open mind that is willing to explore points of view that may challenge my own beliefs. How have I changed since coming to Glenbard? I’ve learned the importance of waiting to judge people until I have a chance to hear and understand their point of view, rather than making assumptions based solely on their appearance. How has high school prepared me for the next step in my life? I can only hope that all of this experience has taught me to be the kind of person we would all like to see, not just as residents of this school district, but as citizens of this country.
