You will have better results painting with PAX, which is a mixture of ProsAide (or similar) adhesive and acrylic paint. It won't crack nearly as much at the joints. Old FX makeup trick, I use it all the time on prosthetics.

Do you cut the foam muscles at a bevel to help the edges stick down smoothly?
