These were two good football teams in a hard-fought game with a remarkable finish. I'm proud of my SM West Class of '82 classmates who won this game. John Reichart was a very good high school athlete and a great, humble, and smart classmate who I highly respect. HIs humility and character are epitomized in his interview in this video. His wisdom and mental preparation are epitomized in the last play of this remarkable game. And the opportunity he had to make the heroic play he made couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

The oldest photos show not very many trees. Before the city was founded was the land mostly prairie grass, or was it wooded forest?

I grew up in overland Park, my great great grandfather was like Mr Olsen on little house on the Prarie, he had a mercantile, and later an ice house at 80 & conser, John conser his business went from conser to foster, they named that street after him, he was here before ks was a state, they named it overland park because the overland stage came and parked there at his store. Strang came much later then my ancestors, but got the credit, because he was an elite, go figure, he wasn't one of the first 10 families there. My sister and I would walk to sunflower drug store and get a 25 cent cherry soda in the tall soda glass, then go down to Ben Franklin's and get 2 for a penny candy, occasionally we would go to the movies, this was in the 60's we went to overland Park grade school too and so did my older brother & sister, they were born in 1945 & 1947, and my other sister, me my younger brother were born in the 50's, we grew up on 79th st.

It's interesting. I grew up in JOCO for most of my youth from 1976-89, not in Overland Park, but nearby in Shawnee and Lenexa. Though my neighborhood and schools were in Shawnee, our family spent many weekends in OP at places like the malls, Glenwood theatres, King Louis West, etc. I moved away for over 2 decades after high school, but recently moved back and now live in OP and I see so much more recognition of Strang, the Strang Line, etc than I ever knew about back in the day. The walk my wife and I take near 103rd street park where we live is dotted with Strang Line history markers, signs, etc.

He has more class in that interview at 17-18 years old than professionals do today. I remember this from years ago, and the interviewer asked some tough questions. He never disrespected his coaching staff, or made excuses. He is a winner, and handled that with amazing character.

SMN class of 2010 thanks for posting! Love to see the Indians play. Shawnee Mission North Football 1922-Present! Go Indians. P.S. shout out to the Shawnee Indians sorry our mascots a prairie Indian (Native American) it started as a Halloween costume that would be considered racist by our current standards. But us SMN (Indians) alumni wish the Shawnee tribe would renew the 1992 treaty we had to keep our mascot and name. As a Caucasian I always felt a connection to the Shawnee peoples and their history through my school and respect their great leaders such as Tecumsah and so many more! Go SMN we rep the GREAT TRIBE of The Shawnee Indians (Native Americans) GO NORTH!
