This woman has been the poster child for school choice in West Virginia. She is a former telemarketer that works at a christian school near Beckley, WV. She does not have an education degree. She is pushing for the state to direct public dollars into private schools that can discriminate who attends. Her argument is that the state's public education system is failing, but she fails to acknowledge the poverty and drug epidemic that has ravaged West Virginia and how its affected the state's families and children. Her answer to redirect funds from public schools, who accepts everyone, to private schools, who do not, is delusional and misguided. She, along with the cardinal institute, clearly have no idea what the real educators of this state are facing. Defunding public schools to push their pro-Betsy Devos agenda is dangerous to our state, and will only cause a larger rift between the "haves" and "have nots." More needs to be done to address the child poverty in our state. School choice is not the answer. Our public schools need support more than ever.

A couple things! A ) This woman, me, Jamie Buckland, Founder & Exec Director of the WV FUE, is extremely proud of my humble beginnings as a telemarketer. Was that intended to be an insult? I do not work at a Christian school, but I do teach workshops on compulsory education and exemptions if you'd like to better understand how an entity is recognized as a school. My arguments are never about the failure of the public education system, so I am curious where that comes from. My arguments are based on the reality that a single system will never be able to meet every child's needs, and so I ask the question, how hard should it be for a parent or grandparent to provide a quality education for a child who's not being best served by their local public school? Anyone who has listened to me argue for the expansion of choice has heard my posture towards generational poverty, apathy, ignorance, and addiction that plagues our state. My personal story is shaped by my eldest son's biological father's addiction to oxycontin, so that is an interesting assumption about me. I 100% agree we need to address child poverty. Let's work together! I would love to brainstorm ways we can have effective change and address the mismanagement of school funding to better support teachers and students. We likely agree on the problems and differ on the possible solutions, but that's okay. I'm here for it.

Imagine using internet speeds of 1.5/0.5 mbps or less in the 2020's or at worst, no internet at all. This is the reality for many rural communities. Appalachia in paticular.

The WV Real Estate Appraiser Board is running another 4th branch of government called the Upgrades Committee where applicants are denied their right to work after completing all state and federal obligations based upon arbitrary notions of three or four men. The committee chair received his credentials only two years ago and provides no matrix or guidance as to what an applicant is to obtain to meet their arbitrary requirements. Apprentice provides 5 samples and completed 3 interviews/interrogations that are written nowhere in the requirements. The interview was not to protect the public, it was harassment and abuse of power. There are dozens of individuals denied their right to work across the Mountain State. Any assistance the Cardinal Institute could provide would be greatly appreciated. The WV Legislature needs to know the agency is circumventing the will and intent of the law and working outside of their authority when they deny individuals their right to work.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I'll ask our policy team to look into this. We have examined the occupational licensing requirements of a handful of WV real estate occupations in our Barriers to Work paper and found that many of the licensing requirements are much more burdensome in WV than our neighboring states of PA & OH. www.cardinalinstitute.com/app/uploads/2019/09/Cardinal_BarriersToWork_HighRes.pdf

It’s a logical fallacy to argue that this anecdote, no matter how significant, supports that this is the necessary countermeasure to any educational gaps.
