Compilation albums, and Greatest Hits packages do not count, unless the artist as a "singles"-only participant. Chicago VI was terrible, as was Jonathon Livingston Seagull, and both Elvis records. The Carpenters album was a seller, but middle of the road, not rock 'n' roll, with only one interesting song. The rest of the album was filler. Charlie Rich was Country, his single, Behind Closed Doors was on Top 40, because of Top 40 (and that IS why it died), Goat's Head Soup sold a lot of records, BECAUSE Exile on Main Street preceded it, not because it was worth the cost. Barry Live sucked camel's balls, and Billy Joel's Piano Man was a let down, nothing else on the album as good. Here's a real list of the "top" albums of the year, in the sense of the definition of top (of, relating to, or being at the top : uppermost). Sales is a poor reference point, because people buy things for too many reasons that have nothing to do with quality. Elvis movie "soundtrack" albums sold all through the 'Sixties, but I wouldn't advise buying ANY of them, because they are uniformly bad! My list has albums people were buying, because they WANTED to, not just to get a "collection of yesterday's hits". You got three of the Top Ten. So these LP's are from 1973, but there is a ranking of these LP's for 1971?! How lame is that!

Having greatest hits records on the lists is just stupid. Be better.

A lot of "Best of" lists should be titled, "Favorites", but your list uses spurious (total) sales figures. The Beatles (aka the White Album) was the Best-Selling LP from Jan 4 to March 1, followed by Wichita Lineman (a tepid Glen Campbell album riding on the title single), then the 2nd (not as good as the 1st) Blood, Sweat, & Tears LP (each returned, WL for 1 week, BS&T for 2). Then, it was time for Hair, from Apr 26 to July 19, when BS&T came back for a THIRD round at #1, for 3 weeks! Sales figures are seldom a valid measure of value. Not to mention that ALL of the albums on your list are from 1969. The only 3 albums from your list to make it to the top that year were Green River (4 weeks), Abbey Road (8 weeks), and Led Zep II (1 week). Tommy shows up on the Billboard year-end list in the #4 position, with sales well under 1 million. According to Billboard, the "best-performing album of 1969" was Inna-Gadda-da-Vida, by Iron Butterfly, an atrocious album by an unimaginative band. I loved Tommy, but I never thought of it as a "great" album. The sales figure you post are "sales to date" numbers, the cumulative figures, NOT 1969 sales figures. I know, I was there, buying records, playing music, and writing about rock 'n' roll. "Everyone" has a copy of the album, but few listen to it. Too much filler, too much "cute" stuff I wasn't particularly interested in hearing, again. If I was in the mood, I'd play a side, but seldom the whole four sides. I don't know of any critic,, magazine, or poll that listed Tommy as #1, mostly for the reasons I mentioned. Tommy was ground-breaking, but not gripping, the way Abbey Road was, or the Band's second album, among a number of others. The "best of 1969" was a lot more than you scratch the surface of, a journey from Led Zeppelin I to Let It Bleed (arguably the Stones' best). Correction these albums came out in 1973. And GBYBR was the number one selling album in 1973. But Dark Side of the Moon despite not being the best selling album in 1973 (It hit number one for a week while GBYBR was number one for eight weeks) ended up surpassing GBYBR in sales by the end of the decade.
