เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 ก.ย. 2012
We started as a small 6 acre farm/ homestead in the foothills of North Carolina, raising cattle, chicken, meat goats and dairy goats, pigs and rabbits and much more. We recently bought 24 acres of an abandoned cattle farm just down the road, we are fixing the old home and property to start a new homestead. Join us as we find out what fun and challenges come with running a small farm and turning an abandoned property into a working homestead!

Nice presentation
1 st year electrical apprentice here. What state are you in my buddy wants me to do this exact job to his house.
@kickrocksbit187 north carolina
@Grazing-M-Acres That's awesome I am to by the obx. I didn't think we could pull the meter without a license. I thought the county has to come out to do.
Shop around. I bought bulk feed 1000 lbs between $90- $100. Bulk bag was $15 because I bought 1000 lbs of corn (finish beef) for $100 including bag. Hog cost $60 Feed $100 pasture raised. Wooded area. Processing $250.00 including smoking bacon and ham. Put right at 200 lbs of meat in the freezer. Plus 60 lbs of fat to process.
If you're the *handy* type who is detail-oriented/meticulously pays attention to details, you'd save yourself a boatload by/via DIY.
Hence whyI’m watching this. My high-end full-service home service company wants $10k - 13k (depending on which panel) for a 150 to 200 amp service upgrade. 😮
@@Dr_Kenneth_Noisewater No kidding, the costs can be outrageous... I'm working on a similar upgrade and know enough to get the job done the first time correctly up to the mast... An electrician is involved of-course, but I can at least do some of the grunt work such as adding outlets and so on and the box etc... If you are handy and can follow basic NEC requirements/proper grounding/wiring/matching of wiring to fuses/boxes/safety, etc., the job can be done as quickly as 3-4 hours or over a week-end or two, saving yourself thousands... Good luck on your project Doc !!
i think is it far better to raise your own, you know what your eating and what went into them, good video, thank you
The only thing your missing is an O2 sensor.
Or just ventilation blowing air down in. Well diggers/workers historically used forced air for anything much over 10-15 feet deep.
This was my first time raising feeder pigs. I used a homemade gravity feeder. Your feed bill per bag was high. I found a local community farmers cooperative that had 16% protein feed for $11 per 50 lb bag. This reduced my overall cost considerably. Also there are grain mills that sell bulk feed. The quality of meat you get by raising hogs is better than commercial pork.
How are those orange insulators on your t-posts? I have pigs too and I can’t stand the standard tractor supply insulators, they keep breaking on me.
@@GrowingLittleCountryhomestead they are GREAT! Any time I run electric wire, I'll use those
what size entrance cable is that?
@tested123 I forget the exact name but it's aluminum wire rated for 200 amp.
@@Grazing-M-Acres in canada it would be 250 mcm.
6ft to main breaker NEC code
Main breaker is located outside just below the meter, pannel on the inside is a sub pannel.
No the height of the main breaker in your panel should be 6ft
@dalejones2108 is that a new code, I've never read that in our code book.
You will not get a good ground if you separate the ground from the new codes. That's why when you tie everything at the first panel. You get a better ground because the neutral hubs the ground and then anything after that, you separate, maybe put a sub panel in. Next to that 1 or another, one or somewhere in the house. Then you separate the grounds and the neutrals
When you put the ground, you gotta put on a new job bar. Because that's your main panel. The neutral hubs the ground. How do it's work and then you? Separate your grounds after that, if you put a sub panel and you separate the grounds from the neutral. Or else you're reintroduced the neutral back into the ground system
You know where we live at. You're not allowed to have any electrical panels in a wet room or bathroom. We'll make you Tear it out where we live
You have a mouse problem. That’s no good in the well.
Is there a difference in the service line-in equipment? Did the utility company have to put in a 200amp compatible meter?
@@EnjoytheToil I install a 200 amp meter combo base ( its code for my county). I also had the utility company upgrade the transformer and install a 200 amp service wire underground which they did for free.
@@Grazing-M-Acres right on. Thanks.
Thanks for this video! When we got "City" water in 1982, we stopped using our 3' hand-dug well at my parent's house (much to my disappointment). Now they are both gone and I live there now with my family, and we want to restore it, maybe for drinking and certainly for our garden. It's only 21' deep, but never ran dry and gave us a constant supply of cold, clear water. I'm 65, so I will have to hire someone to go down there for me and clear like you did. What did you use to scrub the sides? Once it was cleaned and settled, did you put any bleach or any gravel in the bottom? Thanks!
Same situation here...we bought the house property and use the well only for garden. It's 36" dia concrete sections maybe 25' deep. I'm trying to invent or tinker with ideas something that may help get it cleaned out estimating maybe 48" of muck at bottom. NO...I'm not going in there.
Hey 👋 sorry for the late reply, so at the bottom I just scooped up the muck and put it in a bucket and had my father haul it up and dump it. Once I reached the bottom of the well casing I stopped digging. On the way up I cleaned the walls and joints of the casing with bleach and just a stiff brush. I also sealed the top 3 or so joints with hydraulic cement to help stop muddy water getting in. After everything was finished I dumped a gallon of bleach in the well.
@@clutch5sp989 there's well companies that will blow out wells to clean them.
I use the cap for when my chickens make a mess and pull a bunch of feed out on to the ground. It locks them out so they have to eat all the food off the ground.
Hey, that's a great idea. I'll have to remember that. Thanks!
@Grazing-M-Acres I almost forgot. I put a Little Giant rubber flexible farm pan under it too. Catches most everything the chickens pull out. This allows me to dump everything back in every now and again.
Nice
I'm buying an old house with an abandoned well. I'm going to have to do the same thing and make a better cover. Thanks
Just make sure the casing is in good shape first
Nice work brother!! That’s a strong idea for water management. Pool is looking awfully good right now. Pushing almost 100 degrees up here in PA
Thank you! Ever since I put that in (over a week ago) it hasn't rained a drop. It's been hot and miserable here!
Never knew they were called waddles. Learn something new everyday
What angels?
Unfortunately I didn't draw any plans for this. I really just sketed it out on the board untill I got the pieces to fit.
Saving and releasing that bunny, was wild, thanks for sharing!
I'm just glad I was able to save it in time! We love seeing all the wild rabbits!
Looking good
Thanks! I'm trying.
Add copper pipes or scrap inside the tote and no algae.
I'd be worried about air quality. Or CO2 concentrations down there. Hopefully you had a fan to force some air to bottom
Oh I definitely did! It would have been a bad day without one.
Much appreciation from a city boy here , only drank well water in summer at my PAA's farm in N.C. Hydronic HVAC Installations , we also put a magnetic strip or siphon before your spun filter sometimes depending on what equipment we are installing. As you are probably familiar with high iron in well water . I bet you could create one yourself to go on your 3/4 " pvc system. Just another layer of protection/maintenance for ya to mess with. We also put ultra violet on air systems. They have shown high quality air conditioning, so I believe in them . A charcoal treatment is another add on thats good on taste, which I believe you could create also . Enjoyed your post, thanks for sharing.
That's some great information, thanks!
Are you planning on painting the totes black to prevent algae buildup?
This would definitely be easier and probably cheaper than painting it IBC Tote Cover with Zipper, 275 Gallon Sunshade Waterproof Protective Cover, Heavy Duty Nano Materials Dustproof Fade Resistant Tote Covers For 1000L 275 Gallon Water Tank a.co/d/gQmAh0F
That kid is too cute. I remember my twins, now 19, with every project I did. Well worth the time, Dad. You'll never regret it.
Thank you!

PDF or anything?
I don't have one, I'm sorry.
Please , check if there is a chimney to vent the smoke...
Min 2:57 this a fire pit for the barbecue. In my country (Argentina) its call "Parrilla" and we make the barbecue (asado) only with charcoal or very dry and hard wood. And the room where this parrilla is we call it "Quincho" that is an open or closed (attached to the house) space to place the grill to make the barbecue.
That's really neat! We figured it had to be a charcoal grill. It does connect to the chimney, but we haven't used it yet. I hope to soon though. Thanks!

@@Grazing-M-Acresare you an electrician ?
@PennYankeeWoodworks I'm not a licensed electrician, I've always done my own electrical work though.
So amazing
Like how you said after putting two chicken in “don’t let them out” and both chicken got out
It happens alot! Haha 😄
What, Size is your coop?
I think it's 5x6
What did you use for your cover crop? Nice to see aomeone besides me using the metal wayer tanks as brooders!! I strt them in the basement in those at a day old and at 1-2 weeks old I move them to an outside shed then when the size is right I move them to a house with a yard that has a roof over it. We have issues with hawks, racoons, foxes, area dogs & coyotes. So all of our yards foe pouktry are made from 6’ heavy duty chainlink. I wrap 24” tall 1/2” squares hardware cloth/rabbit wire around the inside of all poultry fences and place barn tin under the fences with about 6-8” on the inside and the rest on the outside and weighted down with concrete blocks. I let our chickens free range when I am home after all my indoor stuff is done so I can keep an eye on them. Otherwise they get fruit, veggie & meat scraps that have been diced up along woth the steady feeders & waterers when they stay locked up due to weather or no one being home. We have lost to many burds to different predators. Biggest predator we have had with chicks under 8-12 weeks old ((depending on breed)) has been snakes. Black snakes, king snakes, cooperheads & rattlers have all be caught in the chick shelters and in the hen houses eatin eggs. I hope you never wxpweiwnce the venimous ones in your chicken houses. Their bites have killed many a good layin hen.
I always use a mixed crop for cover crops. It consists of cereal rye (NOT rye grass), red clover (which they love), purple top turnips, tillage radishes, buck wheat, and a few other things. So far, we haven't had any predator problems. the tall forage hid them really well, and the 8 joules on the electric fence keeps everything out. It would probably keep a bear out!.
Love your Chicken House 🐓 Great video!!
Thanks!
Good to see another video
Been out of commission since my surgery.
Well done….
Thank you!
Since last month i hatched 33 chiks from 3 chikens out of 39 egges that makes it 93% of the egges right just lost chik i don't know how so now i have 11 one month old chiks ans 21 others round 9/7 days old 🙏🏻
did the same. started with 20 then added another 20 the meyers meal makers and tsc 6. and adding 100 meat birds in a month or so. only lost 1 jersey gaint. next time check you look hatchery, the more you buy the better price
We hope to be adding meet bids soon! 100 may be to ambitious for us this first time around though.
how has this held up to 2 years of use?
I replaced the feeding lid just cause it started looking bad, they would chew and scratch on the corners. Thats all that ive done to it so far. if I were to wash it, it would look brand new.
@@Grazing-M-Acres amazing! thank you for the reply. great channel too btw!
I am a gardener. and my professional opinionis straw carpet with plastic or is it a naturally degradable material. ? Spraying straw on grass is a total waste of money and time for me. You can also just cover the grass seed with a small layer of dirt.
The "plastic" material naturally degrades over time. I've always had better success with covering it with straw.
Half the brooder should be covered to keep the heat in.
Think that's a walnut tree
