Electric Motors on Hang gliders and some Great Australian Flying Sites - 4k

More electric motors on hang gliders, featuring "Carbon boy" 11kg thrust and the "POD" 8kg thrust. Showing the difference in normal flight characteristic when using a small helper motor. These two showcase flights were at Yallingup WA and Daydream - Halls Head WA two awesome flying sites in Western Australia. Please subscribe so we can start earning from TH-cam :)

Using two cheap R/C Modeling motors to get from the beach up on to the hill, at Shelly's Beach Western Australia, back in 2010. Using Rob's fancy new carbon fiber motor mount system for the cheap motors because one of the very expensive Plettenberg Predator motors had burnt out :(

Simplest Silage tank solution with deck pump out
มุมมอง 58ปีที่แล้ว
A very simple and clean solution with only two valves. This is a Diablo 80l tank which saves a lot of mucking about making your own sealed fittings on a home made tank. For this suck out to deck addition one more "tee" was required and joined into the hose between the tank outlet and the pump. After the tee is a new ball valve to isolate the system when not pumping out.

Electric motors on hang gliders ORIGINS an OLD love story

Showing the initial trial flights of Robs electric powered adventures way back in 2008. This video shows a dual motor configuration mounted on the A frame. These were Plettenberg Predator motors rated at 12KW but probably using about half of that.

    With such a high thrust line attached to the glider, the risk of tumbling seems very high to me. Unless proven differently,, I will stick to my mosquito harness.

    Interesting.. Is bracket robust enough to take twisting torque with one motor out? also needs testing on one motor? What if any/all of it falls into the wing? I'd rather have all thrust in the centre.

    Love what you’re doing. I’ve seen the early gas king post mounted versions in action in the middle 70’s. Two of my HG friends where experimenting in New Hampshire- USA and two separate occasions managed to forward tumble during a full power stall. Both survived luckily by large bushes below. Granted today’s wings are far more stable then those early wings Still we have not heard what your units are putting out for thrust. Can you maintain or climb in still air conditions??? My old Mosquito was putt out just over 100 lbs thrust and I tried a friend’s direct drive electric motor installed on a harness and putting out about 60 lbs for a slow climb.

    There is a very good reason that the successful motor modifications for HG are attached to the pilot. It's to do with pitch stability in turbulence. When under power, you get big pitch down moments when the pilot goes light on the hang strap. There have been a few attempts at airframe attached motors. Most have either killed or nearly killed their inventors.

      @cwallen32 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Completely disagree. You can successfully mount motors to a glider. However, this design will have issues if you try to flat-land launch it with no ridge lift. The thrust line is too high compared to the center of mass, however, with the low power motors and some ridge lift I don't see an issue with the design just limited in application and wouldn't increase motor size much. My preference is an ehelp for low performance gliders and a twin keel mount for high performance (still testing but getting good results and 400fpm up). Also if you're referring to the Soar Master I read one of the best accident reports out of the UK on the unit and have spoken with multiple pilots who actually flew them including Mark Stucky. My takeaway is people didn't understand the operating limitations, didn't have proper training, and were flying them on very dated equipment by today's standards.

      @@cwallen32 Yep, agree Cas. "However, this design will have issues if you try to flat-land launch it with no ridge lift." That was my first thought on seeing the launch from the beach. Lot's of laminar flow there to help out. Looked like he could have gone gooning without any help. LOVE the idea and the adventure! "...people didn't understand the operating limitations,..." This is your golden nugget IMHO. Thanks.

      @@jamesgaar5383 Yup but a good solution to get established in lighter beach style ridge lift, so a cool design for the intended application.

    YUP! 1970 baby! My feet first left the ground in the summer of love, 1969.☮ 55 years later, after a marriage, house, kid, dead kid, divorce, and I am still flying! I love every minute of airtime I can get! I have Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome... AIDS for short.😂 A suggestion. Mount two ducted fan motors. one on each down tube. This will lower your thrust line. They are pricey. About 300. bucks apiece+ batteries etc, but each fan has an output of 8.6kg that will give you a total of 17.2kg/37.9 lbs. of thrust.

    I've been looking for a while for an old old HG video. Title was something like "walking the dog". It was a short vid, somewhere in Australia (I think) on the beach between beach houses, very blustery day, short dune/sea breeze hops, dog barking and chasing along after the glider. Set to music Angus and Julia Stone "Bella" I just love the vibes of this video. would love to find it again....
