Chasing Canadian Pacific 2816 Steam Locomotive to Davenport, IA
To celebrate the merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern railroads, the newly formed CPKC railroad launched their "Final Spike" tour to celebrate the linking of the two railroads. The 1930 steam locomotive, Canadian Pacific 2816, was launched on a tour of the CPKC network in North America. Here, on a rainy May 9, 2024, I chase the 2816 and it's consist on its way to Davenport, Iowa. I caught it in three locations: Lanark, IL; Clinton, IA; and Davenport, IA. Enjoy.

On a Saturday afternoon I was able to catch the Westbound CP 253, with four locomotives leading a manifest, and then a DPU, and then a string of double-stack container cars. Among the consist was two shiny, relatively new SD70ACUs.

On June 7, I caught a single-car stack train on the CP Chicago Sub as part of a trial run for refrigerated produce being hauled by train up from Mexico to the Midwest. It was one of my favorite catches in a while because of the unusual nature of the train. Hopefully the trial was a success and we see more stack trains on the CP (soon to be CPKC) in due time. Enjoy.

On May 22, 2022, myself and a friend went to railfan Clinton, Iowa on the joint UP-CP (former IC&E) trackage, and saw 5 CP trains pass: 2 locals, a manifest, a unit ethanol train, and a ballast train. We were lucky to catch 2 SD60-3s, an SD30C-ECO, a GP20C-ECO, and an SD70ACU among the power. We also saw a number of UP trains, although none were as interesting as the Canadian Pacific action. It...
Railfanning the Rochelle Railroad Park 2022: BN SD70MACs and more

On May 20th, 2022, I went to the Rochelle Railroad Park to see what I could catch, and had a lot of luck: In the span of two hours, I saw two patched BN SD70MACs, a pair of BNSF SD40-2s working the Rochelle local, and a pair of UP SD70Ms working the Sterling local. Enjoy.

CN decided to give railfans one last treat for 2021 on New Year's Eve. The few remaining standard cab GE C40-8 locos usually spend their time on the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range up in Minnesota, but 2010 decided to venture down the WC and onto the EJ&E. I caught it through Plainfield hauling a manifest. Enjoy.

On December 23, 2021, I caught CP ES44AC 8780 and BNSF SD70MAC 8847 hauling train number 680, a unit sand train. In the distance, you can see a Jordan Spreader parked on the siding. I've been trying to catch some CP action before the company is merged into CPKC.

On November 27, 2021, I chased the Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern Railroad between Columbia City and Warsaw, Indiana. I caught video of the train in Larwill, Wooster, and downtown Warsaw by the old Pennsylvania RR station. On Labor Day weekend in 2021, Iowa Interstate partnered with the Science Center in Des Moines to run passenger excursions with their QJ 2-10-2 6988. After riding the excursion, I then filmed the locomotive in and around Des Moines on Sunday and Labor Day. Enjoy.

Norfolk Southern's Marion Branch runs North-South through Warsaw, Indiana with a 2-block segment of street running just North of the CF&E diamonds. On August 14, 2021, I caught footage of two trains - a Southbound manifest and a Northbound stack train on this segment. Enjoy.

I'm honestly pretty sad this 4-8-4 has to go for (like Great Western Productions said) probably decades. The 4-8-4s are my favorite type of locomotive. Awesome preformance of the whistle.

I wish just ONE of the Rock Island's 4-8-4's had been saved, only one of the drivers survives and it was used for the Jesse James robbery marker...

Why have a UP locomotive on the front of the train if the P42 is faster and specifically designed for passenger service?
Old CNW Signal Systems Required the Units to have special Devices which Amtrak Units did not have
@@SignalMan9292 I just looked into this and those particular CNW-era cab signals have been fully phased out. If Amtrak ever needs to use the Geneva Sub again, they won’t need a UP pilot. Were cab signals used on all the ex-CNW lines too (for instance, the Harvard and Kenosha Subs used by Metra)
Yes. They have ran Amtrak without the UP units. Also they were finished removing them in 2021 or 2022

Nice catches! The 3517 is one of nine SD40-2’s in the 3500’s in service right now as NS slowly rebuilds their fleet of SD40-2’s into SD40-3’s. That ex BN unit still going strong
