I'm just partial to the 80s-early 90s cartoon. The live action movies automatically turned me off once I saw they werent child sized (read: mutant) chipmunks and Alvin didnt wear his hat.

Pretty hilarious and based video. I used to like the old animated cartoons but the Fox movies just destroyed the brand. It's a punchline now. Even then, maybe the gimmick of the fast voices and them just being chipmunks just isn't enough in this day and age for most audiences. I don't know what else they could do with the IP unless somebody gets really creative with it.

The only things I remember about the fourth movie are the fact that the Chipmunks are canonically on the no fly list and the John Waters cameo. 3. Speaking of the John Waters cameo in The Road Chip, Alvin has canonically seen Pink Flamingos.

The first Alvin movie wasn’t too bad since it was an origin story, not the CGI-transformed classic cartoon character enters real world trope every live action cartoon based movie used in the 2000’s and early 2010’s. It was definitely flawed and I can understand why some would prefer to skip it, but it arguably felt like a celebration to the franchise’s previous success, and it did have a good satrirical aspect even conveying a message about the music industry. The sequel or I’m sorry, the squeakuel, was where it really started to get weaker, the whole idea of the chipmunks going to school wasn’t taken seriously and the Chipettes had like no development. In the 1983 series which I have watched quite a bit of not too long ago had like a rivalry + possible romance between the Chipmunks and the Chipettes even if the Chipettes weren’t that much different from the Chipmunks character-wise, it was still better than nothing without a doubt. Chipwrecked honestly feels like a mess from what I can tell. I haven’t seen it in years but I remember even as a kid I stopped caring about it around half way through because it just got so boring. Road Chip I’ve only seen once but I have a feeling if I rewatched it, it would be full of meta humor, and maybe it’s just me but the animation on the chipmunks somehow looks worse. I can see why this one failed because the Chipmunks have had a long enough stay in theaters and the franchise just kept getting worse and worse. I remember liking the 2015 series as a kid, but looking at it now yeah they don’t look anything like chipmunks. The 1983 series did depict the chipmumks with hair and more minor human-like features, but they still managed to maintain their actual chipmunk designs. And there was even that one episode if I remember correctly that I found creepy even as a kid where Alvin fell in love with a new principal, you know a chipmunk who is meant to be a child falling in love with an obviously grown adult woman who runs the school, I know the student crushing on teacher plot was a thing in other shows before, *cough* Wayside, but there were exemptions like Todd being hypnotized by the mushroom surprise. I might seem like I’m nitpicking on that episode but it just bothered me. Additional note, there was even controversy about the 1987 animated theatrical film “The Chipmunk Adventure” based on the 1983 series about the Chipettes singing a suggestive song, it was all over TikTok at one point. I’ve never watched this Chipmunk film nor have I seen all the direct-to-video films from the 90’s, but that would be questionable knowing how tame the Chipmunks were even back then for its audience, and again if they were meant to be kids that would be concerning.
