A Winter Visit to Andy's Orchids: The World's Largest Orchid Collection
Andy Phillips of Andy's Orchids has built the largest collection of species orchids in the world! This is one of my favorite places to visit in San Diego. Andy has specimens from every genus, common to very rare, with over 7500 species and at least 750,000 individual plants available for purchase in at least 7 climate-controlled greenhouses plus numerous outdoor sections! He also keeps, propagates and sells many other tropical, temperate and desert plants like succulents, begonias, climbing plants, ferns and more!
There are prized specimen plants in every section of the property and even some show gardens. The seaside community of Encinitas, located on the northern half of coastal San Diego County, California, has the perfect year-round weather, with a high humidity but cool breeze, to raise many epiphytes. Most of the tropical species are kept in heated greenhouses while montane species are kept air-cooled, shaded buildings!
Four times a year, Andy and his wife host open-houses where guests can visit the facility and purchase plants. His brother, Harry, and many friends, employees and the interns are available to answer questions and make recommendations. You can also book private tours and visits by visiting the links below. Many plants can be purchased on the website, as well!

The San Diego Zoo is considered the World's greatest zoo for many reasons! With one of the most impressive collections of animals and plants, the layout of the zoo is based on region and habitat. Many of the zoos endangered species are kept in biotope based habitats that benefit the animals over the viewing public. Tiger River was the first regional biotope developed to display an Asian Rainfir...

I visited the NEW Daytona Beach Aquarium and Rainforest with Stefanie Karas. This public attraction has a nice collection of reptiles, amphibians and fish and was just a few minutes from The Ocean Center where we held our Aquashella Florida event in 2024. I give it a thumbs up! Can't wait until the Rainforest section is finished! #aquarium #reptiles #publicaquarium #tropicalfsih #Stingrays #day...

Thank you Sam :)
Awesome job Sam
You got some nice fish in that tank ❤
It's been a few years since we've been there. It was on a plant day, and we toured the orchid house. One of the best tours there! Although I grew up in LA County, our family visited the San Diego Zoo since before I can remember, which is the 50s. We used to be members and took our own family there when Tiger River opened. It was revolutionary! Nothing like it had before existed. They had the Gharials as part of it then. Since then, they have opened up more native-type habitats on the "Tiger River" theme, but I will always like the first one the best. Take care.
Thanks for sharing Sam! It’s been way too long since I’ve been to SD.
I absolutely love these. Just stunning
👍🏻
Это что за вид рыбы?
You missed another of fish, should have made video longer.
When and where is this, and do they sell?
👋🏼
❤
I love love love this. Sam you are the shit and Paul you’re so sweet. I love my boys!
Awesome!!
That is a gorgeous drawing as usual
That's cool
Try showing some reptiles instead of merch..
Came from OFR and love your art especially the angel fish one
Thank you for the awesome video… Will be down in that area and your video helped!
Sam, I met you at the show in Pomona, CA. Love your work! Looking for your artistry on my favorite fish, the Emperor angel fish.
How did I not find this video a few weeks ago when I will researching Pam for the FFCD. Thanks Sam, great little video
I live in Orange County. Me and my friends would catch spotties all the time whenever we go fishing in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, or Long Beach. Very rare that we catch anything else lol
Just stick to the common names, spouting all the scientific species names every 5 seconds is boring as hell to 98% of those who will watch this. Stop trying to impress us with your memory of their scientific names, no one cares. You come off as an egotistic know-it-all.
Man I miss this place! I grew up fishing that pier. Lots and lots of memories. Being little fishing at night lol. I live far AF away now, all the way up by Canada
I need some oscar drawings. Emailed you from several sites. Love the work!
Under what account did you email? I'll send you some. Hit me up on scalznatureartist@gmail.com
Nice work man.

Ever go on one of their "plant days"? They have tours pointing out the various plants, and they also open the orchid house to the public (my favorite part!) Many years ago, when they first opened up "Tiger River", they had a gharial exhibit as part of the walk. But they were removed a few years later and moved behind the reptile house. I guess they weren't thriving there. I have been in poor health these past few years and haven't been to the zoo in years. Our youngest goes all the time to both parks. Take care.
I love their plant days! If you can make it out to the zoo, you'd love their new renovations the past 5 years. The children's zoo area has been totally changed. Hope your health allows you a chance to get out there.
Great Video. Love your drawing!
Looking great Sam! Thanks for sharing 😊
It's a shell of a store from the last time i visited to what it was when you were there.
I want one or two!❤❤
Sam, I need a few Mikolji Oscar prints , at least 2!!

Looking great Sam! Thanks for sharing 😊
OMG, that Aquarena Springs place is so neat! My Great-Aunt Mary Beth was actually married there, UNDERWATER! She was one of those, that was kinda like their version of a "mermaid", back in the day! Lol... Thanks for sharing, though! So cool, to see it's still an attraction! 🥰❤ And P.S. Those darters were GORGEOUS! 🤩
Not Jordanella any more.
Thank you for sharing. We all should wish to be as positive and passionate as Brian was. He will be missed greatly. And the Community will not be the same without his daily vlogs. I personally will continue to follow Brian's Chanel and continue to support the team at the Reptarium and The Legasea. RIP Brian
Fantastic!
If you are ever back in Encinitas Bird Rock Tropicals is there too, you have to make an appointment, but well worth the effort. Its mostly bromeliads, but I always feel like they are slept on.
Hi Sam. Miss you! Hope you are well!
That one you threw back early in the vid looked like a green crab. In the future if you get those you need to keep them or kill them on sight. Invasive species
First learned of ADG about twelve years ago in TFH magazine. Finally got to visit a few years ago and it was borderline life-changing. If you ever have the chance, it's very worth checking out.
