AGAs make sense in the UK or Scandinavia where it is typically much cooler, but in warmer climates, it really doesn't make any sense. Considering that a conventional stove uses only 2.6% of the energy of a traditional AGA and today's rising energy costs, they make even less sense. I'd love to cook with one at least once and see what the fuss is about, but I don't think I'd want one in my house when it's 40 degrees Centigrade outside.

The original solid fuel AGA cooker made sense in the early 1900s, because the heat storage principle meant less fiddling with burn rates and less tending the fire. You'd load the fire chamber two or three times a day and let it burn, and the heat would evenly dissipate throughout the cooker. But an electric or gas AGA doesn't make sense. You're locked into specific temperatures in the various ovens and the hot plates just to preserve the old cooking method, when a modern cooktop and oven give you real "total control," with the variable temperatures you want available on demand. With the AGA you can control the heat on the hot plates by moving the pots and pans partially on or off the plate? Great; so you have uneven heating across the bottom of the pan. On a modern cooktop you adjust the heat by...well...adjusting the heat.
