The Leicester Trader with Les Reid
Open Bridges - A River Full of Stories: The Leicester Trader
Newark's unique Heritage Barge 'Leicester Trader' is the last Trent size cargo barge built to fit the old locks of the Trent Navigation Company. Saved from being scrapped in 2008 and renovated by Les and a group of local barge aficionados, the dumb barge is now a floating museum, moored in the lee of the imposing 900 year old Newark castle ruins. Below deck in the former cargo hold there is a terrific collection of photographs, films, models, equipment and activities. Here we meet Les who shows us round the barge, both outside at Newark Marina undergoing its ten year survey and hull maintenance, and inside the exhibition as he tells us about the history of the Leicester Trader, and Newark's sailing barges.

Used to enjoy going up old harbour . Used to take palm kernels up there in the 80s ,cant remember the name of the wharf tho .
Weren't that in Half Life Lost Coast?
I once went up the river hull on a Dutch coaster. The Polaris
For someone who fears crossing these bridges(with the exception of Scale Lane footbridge)I would be interested to see how the bridge sequence from the control room.

@@Lou_DH THANKS - I worked for Lapthorn's (Hoo,Kent) for a few years (-1962-1964 ) as skipper of the " HOOKCREEK " Nevere took a pilot at any port in the UK or Conitnent.......except the River Hull ..... We worked on the old coastal " share system " which kept us at sea as much as possible. and were regular Humber callers...... usually up to Goole.....No radar of course, thick fog,of course, and year round Bloody hard work but loved every minute of it John May Vancouver Canada
@@johnmay23 thanks very much John. That's great to hear !
First time I've seen this, Lou! Excellent!

You have an amazing voice, reminds me of a jazz singer almost, very smooth👌
Thanks for posting, very interesting.
Many thanks for this Lou. I just love Dexter's yiolin... it creates just the right tense atmosphere. love Gifford
I did my 2 year YTS apprenticeship on a vessel just like this. This video brings back so many memories. Thank you for sharing
Nice one - you're welcome
Wonderful, love it Lou, Audsxxx
Thanks Auds! Xx
Its a Kramer and an early one. Trevor mainly played a Gibson EB3 during the Ziggy era and later a well loved Fender Precision Bass.
lovely
Thanks Gary
great loved it
Thanks Gary!
we did this by dropping the anchor and going astern all the way up the river to Spillers Granary wharf ....engine astern and dragging the anchor MV HOO CREEK 325 TONS ..1961
Simple astounding. I cannot imagine how much skill and experience was needed there. I didn't think even a small vessel cold have any steerage at such slow speeds. and astern!! :-)
Wow+what tight pilotage! This is a remarkable thing see. Thanks for posting. :-)
You're welcome. There's more posts and photos on the website openbridgeshull.com/
Fabulous trip!
Thanks Steve!
