Why I Ditched My Wahoo ELEMNT for Garmin Edge - MISTAKE?
มุมมอง 772ปีที่แล้ว
Recently I decided to bin off my trusty Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt and instead got the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar GPS bike computer. I had three reasons (aka excuses) that I convinced myself were justifiable to shell out on the Garmin, so in this video (after a quick unboxing), I'll go through each one and explain why I switched out Wahoo for the Garmin. Is it really an upgrade? Was it a mistake? Let's see ...
I Tried CX Bike Racing Again - Bad Idea!

I guess I forgot how much I didn't enjoy CX racing when I first tried it a few years back. So, I recently entered another local CX race, and the experience was ... well, not one I hope to repeat anytime soon. This is just me, though. I can see why others like it - especially as this was a summer race (not windy/rainy/muddy). It was well-organised by a friendly bunch. Had great race options for ...
Try THIS to Cycle Stronger (or to Sweat less!)

When I first started cycling, I did just that ... ride! Then I had a few issues - one was knee pain, and the other was a plateau in improving after that initial burst of progress. So, I started mixing things up and hit the (home) gym to add strength training to riding. And benefits came quick - knee pain was gone, and I started setting regular PBs (and beating my mates up the local climb 🤣). He...

Biking Gran Canaria's Top Destination: Revealed
Insane that people want to cycle with 8000 people.
Try the off road (Gravel if you want to call it what the cool kids do) its far better
Yes! I do like a little off-road adventure. Hones the bike handling skills :)
last year I have bought the MEN'S CARGO BIB SHORTS, which regularly sells at 270 € , at a discount. I should have returned them anyway. The pad is trash, there is no real compression, and after a couple of hours in the saddle you get sore because the pad moves a lot when riding. Also, the sizing may be opposite to the core bib, as I have an XL, but these bibs feel really wide. The straps are ok though, as I'm 6'5. This will have been my last Rapha product. I think they have nice designs, but their apparel is far from being "the best in the world" funcionalitywise
I'm still searching for the perfect bibs - if they exist. Recently tried Lusso & Le Col - so will see how these go!
We did this in 2023. The roads are amazing but at least that year, the water stop was a fiasco. We wasted easily 45 minutes waiting to get water, and as a result of the delay we barely missed the time cut for the 312 (by 10 minutes) and did the 225. I believe organizers learned some lessons so likely was better in 2024 and beyond.
Oof. Well at least we didn't get the delays during our ride. Will definitely be going back to Mallorca, but doubt I'll do this event again.
@ Agree. Would just do the route on a different day, self supported.
Thanks for this. Some good advice, especially about the feed stations. I like orange juice in my bottle with electrolyte tablets in. I will be attempting the 312 for the first time , next year. I've ridden up the Femenia many times and the Puig Major once. The rest of the course will be a new experience. If the colours are mandatory, I hope the pockets are deep with at least one zip section. 🙂
Enjoy it ! :) I think they may have changed the demand for mandatory 312 tops - but I'm sure they will announce this closer to the ride. The official tops we had were by Gobik - a good brand, but I didn't wear the top ;)
@@PEDALLERS Thank-you. There are four of us going next year and we are hoping to wear our Mansfield Club colours, especially wind jackets on the long descent off the Puig Major.
That’s a great descent - I really enjoyed it. Just had to be careful with the number of other riders and consider their talent level - as well as my own 🤣
great pants. rapha and Pearl Izumi are the best.
Never tried Pearl Izumi - but have heard of them. Currently trying out some bibs from Lusso and Le Col, so will see how they go.
What size is your bike? Also do you a longer stem?
That Enigma is around a 58 (custom build). I recently travelled with a Specialized Aethos (also 58) - still took the rear mech off to be safe, and it 'just about' fits in this box, although dropping the saddle a few cms works well. Other than that - no faffing around needed 🤞
If you compare today’s jerseys to vintage jersey from like the 70s, you might think, “damn the old jerseys are so long”. Then when you put on a contemporary like Rapha jersey, you might feel is better, till you try to use the rear pockets. You have dislocate your arm to get anything in the pockets and break your arm to access the middle pocket. Try to unzip the secure pocket. It’s not easy.
Ha yes. Jersey pockets can be tricky. A choice between struggling (and crashing) or stopping. The zip pocket has definitely increased in size over the iterations of Rapha jerseys I have.
The 2024 event learnt from some of the issues of the previous year. Food stops were better provisioned, they even added in an additional water stop. The get away was also very smooth, I arrived abour 6:15 and was away by 6:45. Would echo what you say about preparation and planning, nutrition and hydration are criical and I know that in 2022 I messed these up and sufferred in the last third, in 2024 I got it right and was strong throughout. It is a great event and I highly recommend, am booked in for 2025 and looking to get my best performance yet. Great video and lots of excellent advice.
Wow - you really like it! I can understand it - it was definitely something I'm glad I did, such a different experience to normal riding. Good luck in 2025 - enjoy :)
Hi guys did you rent your bikes there ? Or take your own , I’m thinking of going next year
We rented over in Hua Hin. Find the Hua Hin Roadies facebook group and a guy called Nick will sort you out. Not sure about Chang Mai or other places, but I'm sure you can rent something there also if you need to.
Great info. What are the make of your glasses look good
Thanks :) I had on Pit Viper 'The Miami Nights' - they do look good (i think!), but ... honestly they are not the best - for clarity or comfort. I read a comment somewhere - "these are Gas Station sunglasses" and i think that about sums it up.
Its quite a shame how the cyclists throw rubbish everywhere, I was picking up rubbish in the mountains for the next 2 days straight with locals while hiking. Just comes to show the type of people coming to do these events :(
I get where you're coming from. It's frustrating to see some cyclists focus only on their performance and not care about the environment they leave behind. I always tuck my used wrappers in my jersey pocket. Thanks for helping to clean up.
@@PEDALLERS Its not all cyclist but a small number can give us a bad name I just cant remember it being this bad a couple years back, also event organizers should also take more accountability, but enough with my useless waffle, thank you for not littering...
We're going there (St Jean de Maurienne) next year...cant wait to do Madeleine and Croix de Fer/Glandon!!
Enjoy it. Madeleine is great. Croix de Fer is on my todo list. Would also recommend the Roselend - that was a good day !
Now I ride fast with people I don’t like, result! 🎉
Ha! I got lucky then and the training camp group were a great bunch 😝
Cycle on your own. Cycle like you’ve only just stolen it! Don’t let the “pay more to go faster with smaller effort brigade” divert you. Coffee and cakes are for non combatants, keep going and eat your own banana and peanut butter sandwiches…….. Who knows, one day you may be able to ride Portugal end to end on a fixed gear!
Strong game! Not sure I can go without coffee and cake though 🤣 Portugal ride sounds good though - maybe not a fixie 😝
Your voice volume mate is lower than the music
Ok - I didn’t notice it in the edit but will check it on the next vid - thanks 👍
Music at the same volume as the narration always boggles my mind.
Thanks for the heads up - didn’t notice it in the edit but will check the next one 👍
Nice and straight forward recs, no wasted time. like it
Thanks 👍 focusing on waffling less 🤣
So true!
👍
Missing the video Mentioned at the end. Would love to see that.
Thanks!. Yes it is coming just need to finish it off and get it on the channel. I mentioned it at the end of this vid to give me some accountability to get it done 👍
please take the bibs off
Great review for someone like me thinking of attempting the 167 version. Plenty of great advice. Thank you.
Thanks - glad it was helpful. It’s a great event, even though it’s a little hectic at times, still worth the experience. And with the 167 ride I reckon you still get to do the “best bits” of the route. Enjoy 👍
I would have liked to see the review/test of them.
For sure. I was going to do a follow on video to ride and review them but … got a bit sidetracked. Sorry 😊
Hi thanks -you have my sympathy. I'm 60 and reasonably fit but I find the other Canaries a little intimidating. I agonised over Lanzarote for a Christmas break and, for precisely the reasons you cite, went to Nice instead. I accept that I'd need warmer gear but for me, the trade off was well worth it. The cafes are open and there is plenty to do off the bike, the climbs are varied and verdant.
That's a great option. Maybe I will also check out mainland Spain. Trouble is - if it's over Christmas it'll be a family vacation (that i sneak my bike on) - not sure my wife will say yes to having to wear 'warmer gear' by the pool ;)
Not enough camel toe we need more camel toe
Solar version for Great Britain?? It's a kind of irony or? 😂😂
You don’t need sunshine for solar 😝😉
the chamois is terrible, the front does come up too high, and the material isnt great. the pro team training jerseys are even worse.
I didn’t really get in with the pro team kit so sold it. Still have one skin tight jersey though 🤣
pro team training is trash
Yep. Not my preference
Is there something enjoyable about riding with 8,000 other people? Sounds like a disaster.
Good and Bad, but overall I’ll pass next time (famous last words!). I didn’t like the early 5am start and queuing up with 8k others. Rolling out and hitting the first climb was pretty cool but then the number of riders descending around you wasn’t so enjoyable. Food stops (including local stores) was carnage.
Wonder what your gear set up was? Ideally would be good to do these in Zone 2. I am a heavier rider and definitely wouldn't be able to do those climbs at threshold or under.
I was on my Aethos - 52/36 front and 11-34 cassette. Looking at the HR zone for the full ride, I was in threshold Z4 for just 4% (so maybe I could have gone harder!) 45% at Z3 25% each Z1/2
Is it me or does the Core stuff actually look a lot better and you get a zipped pocket for that credit card... Kinda funny when you said 8:36 "stand out from the crowd" are you sure? 🤣 Because everyone is a Rapha rider these days.
I don’t mind the core jerseys - plain and functional. Agree, there’s a lot of rapha kit out there these days. I’m always in the lookout for something else, but not found another brand that hooks me yet.
You definitely need a size smaller
Pretty sure I don’t 😝
If you can't stitch in the pad without making the shorts look like a man-diaper, how can you claim to be a premium brand?
Which brands are worth a look? I haven’t found an alternate that I would move to yet.
@@PEDALLERS 7mesh... their MK3 bibs work well for me. Pad stitching is discrete and edges are chamfered for a low profile look.
Thanks. Will keep an eye on 7mesh - looks nice, minimal. Need them in blue, and not cargo 👍
@@PEDALLERS They have non-cargo version... for some reason they are not as easy to find on the UK website. No blue color tho.
Another pair of bibs with comically stitched bullseyes on the private parts and chamois that sits like a brick turd on the backside. I swear bib makers are trolling us to see how ridiculous they can make us look. Except 7mesh... who actually have discrete stitching and chamois with chamfered edges for a smooth transition.
Thumbs up for putting them on! Very helpful for potential buyers like me!
No worries. Hope it was useful. The one tip I don’t think I mentioned - wait for the Rapha sale to buy 🤣
Ditched all my Rapha kit
For what ? I keep looking for another brand but can’t quite find the right one … yet 👍
What did you switch to? I'm currently running the PMCC line.
I’m still looking. I keep getting adverts for Pedal Mafia but … I just don’t like the branding for some reason. Will keep looking 👓
Siroko
I bought a Castelli jersey and the zipper is really so much better than Rapha core jersey. It’s a bigger plastic zipper and so smooth. Love it 😍.
Ring of kerry in Ireland 10k riders around some of the most beautiful roads in the country, and pretty good food stops particularly in kenmare before the big climb up Molls Gap
Thanks - I do fancy another trip to Ireland - with the bike this time. 10k riders sounds … a lot 🤣👍
Rapha recently destroyed their "brevet" line with a new cheaper version...no front pocket and cheaper material on the brevet now
Think I had one brevet top a few years back but didn’t get on with the thicker material
My favorite are the "classic flyweight"(which they barely make anymore) and the "pro-team flyweight" which is discontinued and replaced by a cheaper product named "light weight"...
Agree. My go to is also the classic flyweight. Pro team I’m not as convinced by the fit
Best video I have watched on 312 prep and knowledge upload, thank you. Also very good video for general endurance riding. Cheers Tim B
Appreciate if - thank you ! I just tried to put together the things I’d learnt by taking part in this event - and riding in general 😀
Dartmoor classic? 100 miler. My son did the 312 this last 3 years and compared with last year he said the stops were much improved. Last years were terrible apparently. The wrist bands this year at least were distinguishable and no band only water. The guy with the puncture before it began that you saw did the 167 and apparently had 3 punctures in all that day! The atmosphere in the village was wonderful. My son every year has got better at his fueling strategy and getting it right is so important. Styrker? Bars (I've probably spelt that wrong) which have a one handed tap your handle bar opening helps.
Dartmoor sounds good will check it out - could do with a target, thanks ! Sounds like the 312 this year improved with lessons learnt. About styrkr bars - yes I tried them and they are tasty and a decent amount of carbs- big though ! Cheers.
Never did that ride but I have traned there in the 90s great place to ride I remember the drivers were very friendly and respectful
Yes, it’s an amazing place with great rides. I will be heading back soon for sure, just not when theres 8,500 other riders there 😝
Super review. Better events (safer) and nicer locations out there - personally, I’d avoid
Absolutely. I need another event to focus and train for, but something a little less chaotic 👍
Very interesting info.
Glad you think so!
Too big you should wear a M size or even S I argue
Sure 😉
Hi there are 5 main climbs in Lanza. Femes to the south, Timanfaya in the middle, Haría and Tabyesco are two different ways up same climb and Miridor del Rio in far North which can also be ridden from sea level at Orzola. The wind helps your bike handling skills and it’s the main reason why the Ironman there is the toughest in the world. Give it another try.
You lost me at Ironman 😝. Honestly it just wasn’t my kind of place. Prefer GC and Tenerife, or Mallorca. Hoping to try Girona next. 🤞
Awesome video! 👏 very detailed and informative. I really enjoy it. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Did you have front lights?
Good question! Hopefully Yes. We had a ~2km ride to the start line in the dark but it was quiet … until we hit the queue. By the time we actually left the start line it was light and no need for lights. We did go through at least one tunnel (top of Puig Major) and legally you have to have lights on in road tunnels - but it was closed road so i dont think the Police would be stopping any cyclists there. Other than that our ride was in decent weather and no need for lights. Basically, i would say yes you should have a front light, but you can prob get away without one
You must already have a really good foundation if you've only done 5000km in 7 months leading to the event. I've already done over 5000kms of riding this year already though 90% of that has probably been junk miles and not structured training 😅 For what it's worth, I find the best pacing strategy is going by the power values found on your power curve in Strava. My 20 to 30 minute power in the last 6 weeks is around 235 watts. So on long climbs that last over 30 minutes, pace your power at 235 watts and when your going fast on the flats try and stay/surge up to 235 watts. 312km is long so save your legs.
I probably had a reasonable foundation beforehand but my training was so unstructured up till the point i started to focus on training for the M312 event. Good advice on power and pacing - i tended to go on HR for pacing strategy. But - as i bought a power meter it would be good make use of that and focus on power. I will try it out and see how it goes. Thanks :)
