Little Carnival
Little Carnival is my first experience composing somewhat lighthearted music (if compared to my previous works), but, as you can hear, I couldn't avoid working with a lot of dissonances. The set comes heavily influenced by my experience playing the work of Erik Satie, my favorite composer. I tried, however, to get some distance from his style and sense of humor, in order to achieve a contemplative tone, which is what I usually aim at when writing music.

Erik Satie - Les pantins dansent
มุมมอง 617ปีที่แล้ว
Originally written for a small orchestra and later reduced for piano, 'Les Pantins Dansent' (in English ‘The Puppets Dance’) is an experimental short piece written by Erik Satie in 1913. Commissioned by Valentine de Saint-Point as a “poème dansé” based on an homonymous poem of her own authorship, the piece was performed at the interdisciplinary Festival de la Métachorie, and danced by Saint-Poi...
Erik Satie - Trois Gymnopédies
มุมมอง 30Kปีที่แล้ว
This set of Trois Gymnopédies is probably the best known work of Erik Satie, having found its way to popular culture decades ago. The name 'gymnopédie' is likely a reference to a Spartan festival called the Gymnopaedia, featuring naked dances performed by young men (the word comes from the Greek "gymnos", meaning "naked" or "unarmed", and "paedia", meaning "youth"). Since Satie often called him...
Maurice Ravel - Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré
มุมมอง 696ปีที่แล้ว
'Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Fauré' was composed by Ravel in september 1922, as part of an homage to Fauré organized by Henry Prunières. Ravel utilized a musical cryptogram to build the main theme over the letters G-A-B-R-I-E-L-F-A-U-R-E, literally composing the piece over his teacher’s name. Originally written for piano and violin, the piece was later transcribed for solo piano by Lucien Ga...
Erik Satie - Prière (fragment)
มุมมอง 1.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Prière (in English Prayer or Plea) is a fragment of a musical composition written by Erik Satie. It was found within Satie’s drafts, exercises and incomplete works after his death, and first published in 1969, with the indication 'fragment' siding the title, suggesting that the work was supposed to be longer, and the rest of it was either lost or never came to be. It likely started as a harmony...
Erik Satie - Trois Mélodies (1887), reduced for piano
มุมมอง 19K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Composed in 1887, these ‘Trois Mélodies’ were the first published works of Erik Satie (though not his first compositions), printed by his father’s publishing company. The set consists of three songs for voice and piano, built upon three poems by J. P. Contamine de Latour (1867-1926), a Spanish poet who lived in Paris. It is said that Latour’s poetry has also inspired Satie’s Sarabandes and Gymn...
Claude Debussy - Syrinx (arr. for solo piano)
มุมมอง 4682 ปีที่แล้ว
Syrinx (originally called Flûte de Pan) was composed by Claude Debussy as incidental music, to be performed offstage during Gabriel Mourey’s play ‘Psyché’. Written as a flute solo, this hypnotic melody no doubt sounds better on that instrument, and it's considered indispensable to any modern flutist's repertoire. The title 'Syrinx' is still a reference to the myth of Pan, regarding his amorous ...
Erik Satie - Earliest piano works
มุมมอง 2.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In 1872, at age six, Eric Alfred Leslie Satie started his first music lessons. By age twelve, he was admitted to the Conservatoire de Musique et de Déclamation in Paris, however considered a “quite insignificant pupil”. Finally, at age eighteen, he started to spell his name with a k - becoming Erik Satie. He then composed a very short piece called ‘Allegro’, only published after his death. Shor...
Erik Satie - Avant-dernières pensées
มุมมอง 9532 ปีที่แล้ว
Avant-dernières pensées (in English Thoughts-Before-Last, or Penultimate Thoughts) is a set of three piano pieces written by Erik Satie in 1915. In this set (the last of his humoristic suites from the 1910’s), Satie continues his developments on short, semi-allegoric pieces with funny/absurd writings along the score. Someone familiar with his Enfantines could think of this set as “Enfantines fo...
For mildly unsettling thoughts
มุมมอง 7182 ปีที่แล้ว
‘For mildly unsettling thoughts’ is a set of piano pieces imagined to work as a delicate soundtrack for real life dark and bittersweet moments. It started as a soundtrack to a web series, but, as the series never aired, I took the liberty to recycle some of my favorite ideas. (The main melody of ‘A thought about blood’ is an authorized citation of a melody written by my friend and colleague Mat...
Erik Satie - Deux Rêveries Nocturnes
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
We know little about these Rêveries Nocturnes. They were composed sometime between 1910 and 1911, but never published by Satie himself. The title ‘Deux Rêveries Nocturnes’ was given by Robert Caby, while preparing the posthumous publication of Satie’s inedited works. As for the music itself, it presents us with a serious, dissonant and very modern sounding Satie (much like the heartbroken Satie...
Maurice Ravel - Prélude (1913)
มุมมอง 1.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Ravel wrote this short Prélude in A minor for a sight-reading contest organized by the Conservatoire de Paris for female pianists, in 1913. The contest was won by Jeanne Leleu, for whom the piece was then dedicated. I did not play this piece at first sight, but decided not to overwork my interpretation, so I read it for the first time 10 minutes before recording. Also, this was my first time pl...
Satie's Gnossienne No.1, but in negative harmony
มุมมอง 8312 ปีที่แล้ว
Satie always liked a good musical joke, as well as experimentation. If he was alive today, he would probably have a go on negative harmony. With that in mind, I’ve applied negative harmony to his Gnossienne I, producing this rather ugly and mesmerizing tune. What do you think? Did you find it ugly? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! This track: Gnossienne I, in negative harmony Composer...
Erik Satie - Vexations
มุมมอง 2.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
“There seems to be no reason why these chords might not continue for hours.” This sentence was printed in a critical essay published in 1919 (The Musical Quarterly Vol. 5, No. 4), implying that Satie was not a real artist, for his music had no formal structure. Today, no one denies the value of Satie’s work. But still the critic got something right: these chords really can go on for hours. Actu...
Erik Satie - Rêverie de l'enfance de Pantagruel
มุมมอง 5312 ปีที่แล้ว
Originally composed for orchestra as one of Satie’s Trois petites pièces montées, Rêverie de l’enfance de Pantagruel was, later, arranged for piano by the composer himself. The piece has roughly the structure of a short nocturne, and shares some qualities with the famous set of nocturnes written by Satie the year before. Pantagruel, in case you're wondering, is the main character from François ...

      Hi! Thanks for your interest. Yes, I'm planning to record Satie's Sarabandes, as well as the Sonneries de la Rose+Croix, whenever I find the time to resume my practice. I'm applying for a Master's degree in Philosophy at the moment, and it's been hard to find time and energy for everything, so new recordings might take a while to come. But eventually I'm gonna do it 😊

      Thanks for sharing your opinion. I always thought most popular interpretations are too fast and cheery, and my recordings were kind of a reaction to that. I wanted them to sound heavy and slow. But I agree, I wouldn't play so slowly if I was recording today, and that probably would force me to rearticulate the melody.

    A432 :(

    • @furniture-music
      @furniture-music ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! But not for any mystical or conspirationist reasons. I tuned my piano to A432 a few years back, searching for an eerie and "off tone" effect for a drone in a soundscape. I ended up getting used to it, and now A440 sounds a little too bright when I'm playing. In Satie's time, French standard was A435, so it's really a small and arbitrary difference. I'm sorry if that bothers you.

    • @furniture-music
      @furniture-music ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact, you just gave me an idea. Maybe I should try recording a few pieces in A435, matching the standard pitch from Satie's time.

    • @bigbaka4858
      @bigbaka4858 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@furniture-music It really doesn't bother me that much, haha. Regardless of what I think about a432, I'm glad that you chose it on purpose for an emotional effect rather than using it because it's "objectively better" or something. And I can totally see someone preferring it in this intonation. I think it's a much more substantial change than all those videos that speed it up and butcher the calmness, those are just offensive.

    I saw this very early in the morning. I had a middle school performance at a well-known high school. Our band director didn’t seem pleased with our behavior and performance. I’m a percussionist and was mostly responsible for most of the equipment. Feeling the burden and stress made me reach my phone and listen to pop music. I thought it will soothe me, but it didn’t. Until you posted this video. I listened to it and felt this sense of calmness. I was still jittery, but I was soothe a little. I didn’t sleep till 6 and had to be interrupted for school. I know I shared my story of being stressed, but I think you did an excellent job making this music, being inspired by Erik Satie. I’m a piano player, too, not just a percussionist, I’m just at a intermediate level. I learned Erik Satie’s Gnossienne 1 and 2 passionately. I am so glad to find your channel. A channel that shares a love for Erik Satie’s life and music. I, thank you. You may see this and not reply, but I just want you to know that you did very well of composing this piece. I can feel and hear the jazzy chords that you find in Erik Satie’s music. The emotion you played.
