Thank you for stopping. I'm Dave, and despite maintaining a 40 hour job outside the home, I still dream of my own homestead. My wife and I bought two acres about 10 years ago and I've spent that time first honing my garden skills, then more recently starting an apiary, and now a small flock of hens. There's plenty I know, and plenty more that I don't. I'll be posting mostly shorts that highlight tips or money/time/effort saving tips that I found or worked through myself. Great trees you have there. I recommend leaving no stumps when pruning. Especially those big ones at the base. If no stumps left the tree will heal nicely.

The Speckled Sussex hen eating at the metal feeder is my broody girl. Still have to physically remove her from the coop twice a day and put her in the run to eat and drink
Would wearing gloves help? That's what we did with ours. They're ferocious!

My test plant yielded 1.25lbs from what you saw.
I had sores all over my hand for a week because one of my roundhead hens was hatching off and I needed to check under her to see how much progress was made.

Your new nemesis there is common Bermuda grass & believe me I'm not exaggerating when I call it a nemesis. Now that you have it you will spend years trying to rid your property of it completely & if you discover that you have an idiot neighbor who's growing the stuff as a lawn, you'll have to kill him so you can set about ridding his property of the stuff as well. lol Seriously, it's a nightmare to get rid of. Entire tomes have been written dedicated to various eradication methods, so you've got some reading in your future. In my experience & take it for what it's worth since I'm still fighting the stuff & losing, a combination of various methods seems to have the biggest impact on the nasty stuff. Digging it up, preemergence chemicals, & post emergence herbicides. It's a multi-year battle that you may never win if there is a nearby stand of the stuff that you can't kill. It spreads by both above & below ground runners as well as seed. What I do know is that what you're doing, just pulling up the bit you can see actually encourages the stuff to send out more runners. Resist the urge. Dig the entire sprout up or leave it to do a spot spray on.
@Amber-mv8wz I've had it in various places for a while. I can concur it is almost impossible to eradicate. I tried burning sections but it doesn't kill the underground rhizomes, rather just the surface competition, which allows it to grow even faster. I don't want to use chemicals, so I pull by hand.

I forgot to mention that open-pollinated tomatillos are very easy to save seeds. Similar to tomatoes, pull the pulp, let it ferment a few days then strain the seeds to dry. The seeds are smaller than tomato seeds and sprout very easily.

I haven't tried it with the chcken poop yet but I am going to try. Once again, I would dilute it after brewing and not use full force on anything except maybe mature tassling corn
Takes a long , long time to make..Chicken poop tea fertilizer...Its hot...rabbit is cold..can be used as is...or a tea..and want burn your plants... It works...will take longer..I know it has to rest and break down for months..hope this helps and makes sense..Im no expert...

After I harvest the water the first time I do often just add more green and refill with water. After that def replace all the green and start over with the next emptying of the bucket

The difference between the colors of comb didnt show here as well as i hoped. But at least we stunbled across the queen! Dumb luck sometimes works!

Milkweed can be very invasive. After blooming is complete, but before seed formation we mow it down.
Ended up bringing the smaller birds back in the coop and feeding/watering them separately. They were both hungry and dehydrated from being denied all day while I was at work.
How long does it take to drain one jar?
Really depends on the size of the hive and the time of year. Early spring and late fall when resources are scarce, they can easily drain a quart in 48 hours.
@@observationistdave Thanks for the reply! I recently changed out my top feeders for the jar approach - but the jar either didn't drain (holes didnt allow for air to enter as the fluid was leaving) or the jar dumped all over the board beneath. This caused an insane ant problem in the 1st 24 hours. I switched back to the top feeders. I really like the jar concept as it doesn't result in mold formation (like a top feeder), but the hole count / size seems hard to dial in.
@bhildebrandt I just use a small nail and tap a very small hole. Sometimes I need to hold the lid up to light to see if it went through. I then do at least a dozen. I would def recommend testing the jar with water ver a sink before installing. Also remember to always punch the holes from outside in so the bees won't get snagged on the sharp edges.

This particular hive has always preferred the upper entrance. I remove it in the fall, however as soon as I put it back on in the spring, they immediately utilize it. This is my oldest hive, starting its 4th year, but has had several queens
