Everything I’ve read about the battle, from “A terrible Glory”, to “Son of the Morning Star” has Benteen, who was the ranking Captain, as the officer who kept the survivors on Reno Hill together as a coherent fighting force. Reno on the other hand, was an ineffective officer.
The bottom line is that no army in history that was better armed and outnumbered their opponents 20:1 would have lost either . This was more a very lopsided fight than a great victory .
Actually, this was most likely the first and only time when the Indians were the better armed fighting force, a lot of the warriors had Henry and Winchester repeating rifles, as opposed to the 7ths Springfield carbine Model 1873.
Ask me, Custer made a number of fatal mistakes, not the least of which was taking so few men with breechloading firearms and no artillery or Gatling guns against thousands of some of the best warriors on the plains under Crazy Horse.
Artillery and gatlin and guns would have severely slowed him down and were highly impractical this kind of war, also Custer had no control over what rifles the U.S army issued.
@@carlosdanger947 Nothing to do with my point, however. But Custer elected not to take two Gatling guns with him, far as I know no artillery was considered. A good tactician understands what firepower his soldiers can muster with the weapons they are issued. Moving fast is important to cavalry, this I know. But the point is when you only have a few hundred troopers with limited firepower, it's a poor tactical decision to take on far more than a thousand of the best warriors on the Northern plains.
