2024 Political Activism Award: AFSCME Local 1092
AFSCME Local 1092 members Art Miller, Tarajee Goorhouse, and Kate Hoyt have been presented with the 2024 Rick Scott Political Activism Award for their work, along with other Local 1092 members, to SAVE CARE CARLTON from closing down. By utilizing direct action, bold activism at the Legislature and back in their workplace, along with utilizing the media and the solidarity of our AFSCME Council 5 family and the broader labor movement, they saved Minnesota's only chemical dependency treatment facility for women from closing down.
Let us continue to draw inspiration from their example, as we work together to create a stronger, more inclusive, and more empowered union for all. Congratulations!

I enjoyed this portrayal of Pauline Newman. I recently researched this remarkable woman after having found a cigar box opening knife with her name inscribed on it. Perhaps a gift from Frieda?… I’d love to know for sure.

Solidarity!! Reading “going down to Jericho” right now about the Memphis sanitation workers’ strike and Wurf really struck me as a true warrior for the working class. A giant of the labor movement indeed!

My name Alex Perry, local 3432 South West Florida, proud ex Steward for City of North Port Utilities Water and Waste Water Operators, three months ago was terminated from my job of almost 13 proud years of Public service. Ignoring our collective bargaining contract management terminated my job with the city, never had a write up, never came late to work, worked alone running three plants until midnight. Also during my employment earned two AS degrees in Water Science and Wastewater Science, Got my class B Water Treatment License. The reason why they unjustly terminated me was because they couldn’t fire me for any good reason. Three months unemployed, broke, and no insurance for my family, on top of that they called me a liar. The guy who sign my firing letter never finished high school and never took College or university classes, never obtained a Water and or Waste water treatment license. Right now my union rep and myself are filling for arbitration, and hopefully I can clean my name from the insults and embarrassment they put me through. I’m a proud paying member of AFSCME, and proudly can say that also performed my voluntary position to the best of my ability, and will continue as soon as I get the opportunity to do it again. Thanks AFSCME, and as I finish writing these facts, got to get ready for a physical to start my new job where I truly believe will be treated respectfully.

It is so confusing that the sanitation workers were protesting low wages, but yet they put on their signs “I am a man”. In reality they are not men. Black males are boys. We have all ways been boys under this unjust system of racism white supremacy. Men manage things. Men are able to protect their families, but black males have been made impotent, as a result stripped of manhood. Nothing has changed! Black males have no power! The day all black males embrace this reality. We can then make changes that are sustainable and truthful. The civil rights movement only succeeded in allowing non-white people to be consumers not producers. We fought to eat someone’s else’s hamburger, in someone else’s store on someone else’s property.

Thank you so much for this clip! I am trying to find the full speech from the segment at 4:50, but I was under the impression that the speech was NOT his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech from April 3, 1968, but speech to the striking sanitation workers on March 18, 1968 two weeks earlier. Do you know where I might find a video of the full original speech? Thanks so much! All too relevant today.

"I can only go by what they tell me". How can some people be so ignorant!? How about what these union people are telling him?! It's not working! What happens if the vulnerable adult starts having a heart attack?! Or starts having a violent fit? There's no one there. And this guy is trying to say that there is people there! Where? Watching the monitor? At 3am? Come on dude!
