Maiden flight of my HK P-40N 1700mm warbird
มุมมอง 1286 ปีที่แล้ว
I bought this 1700mm P-40N kit from Hobby King 3 or so years ago, on a flash sale, after it was discontinued. It sat untouched for years. Finally the spirit moved me to get it ready and maiden it. I'm pleased to say that after fiddling around with the build and repaint, she flew wonderfully! Mine is repainted into the "Lopes's Hope" livery with a little artistic license on the rudder (I like th...

Dynam Hellcat mods #2

I love this plane! Dynam offers foam planes at very reasonable costs. The foam itself is one of the best quality foams I have seen. They are perfect canvases to make the ultimate model that you want! Yes, their electronics leave A LOT to the be desired but most pilots of moderate skill will have the parts and know how necessary to make a final product as good as any other brand on the market. Eleven Hobby F8F Bearcat with sound system

I installed the MRRCSound ver 4.1 system into my 1100 mm Eleven Hobby F8F Bearcat to see if it could take the weight. Not only is this little plane capable of taking two speakers on-board, I also fly here with 3300 4s batteries. Note, I was getting a lot of static-like sound rather than the pure Double Wasp R-2800 engine sound the card features. This was because my transducers were not firmly h...
PZ FW retract mod

Note: These retracts cost me $10 each, or $20 for the set, not $40!! Here I show the Freewing / Flightline RC type A retracts that I bought from Motion RC and installed in my Parkzone FW-190. These units are much cheaper than the original eflite retracts designed for this plane and I think they will be every bit as sturdy and rugged.
Dynam F-6F Hellcat take off and landings

My modified and upgraded Dynam F-6F Hellcat in several take off and landings. This plane handles the extra weight with no problems. I highly recommend adding oleo struts and flaps to this plane, especially if you add weight. Here is my video highlighting the mods I did: th-cam.com/video/TL6SLhrVwEs/w-d-xo.html

Here are several mods I made to my 1270 mm Dynam Hellcat warbird. There is nothing wrong with the plane in its stock configuration but I can never leave well enough alone! All up weight with an Admiral 4s 4000 mah battery (400 g) is 2430 grams. My list of mods include: - Killer Planes 'Super Max' crashproofing kit (thanks Steve and the lovely Denise!) - Turnigy Propdrive 42-38, 750 kv motor wit...

Eleven Hobby 1100mm Bearcat landing
มุมมอง 2868 ปีที่แล้ว
A short demonstration of the slow flight and gentle landing character of the 1100mm Eleven Hobby F-8F Bearcat. This flight was using a 2700mah 3s battery, the Durafly 10.5 x 8 x 5 prop and a Hobby Eagle A3-L gyro. I put as much of the internals forward as I could to help this plane get to CG without needing extra nose weight. SO far, it works great. My amp and watt tests show that the stock 40 ...

Thanks for sharing. I’ve got the retracts ordered and was going to ask about tiers . Does the 1450mm P-51 bigger then original tiers off Hellcat or will I need to bore out wheel bay and lengthen the shaft channel? Thanks, hope your still flying 👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻
Yes, the 1450mm Mustang tires (from the version 8 era) require the wheel bay to be enlarged a little bit. I don't think I had to modify the geat channel any. Cut carefully! It is easy to cut through the top surface of the wing!
What motor esc propeller up grade did you use?
My mods are here: th-cam.com/video/TL6SLhrVwEs/w-d-xo.html
Great tips. I'm about to maiden mine. What do you think about the recommended cg of 70-75mm? Is that a good spot? It looks too far forward just eyeballing the wing chord.
Because I never flew this plane stock, but immediately upgraded many parts of it, I wouldn't want to say if that is a good CG location in the stock format. I recommend you check out the dedicated thread of this plane on the RCGroups site. I'm sure there is old info there about what CG people have successfully used. In stock form this model has a very light wing loading so I expect it is a very forgiving plane in CG location. The generous wing chord will also generate a lot of lift (something the F6F was known for) further easing any CG sensitivities. Bottom line, if your a moderately experience RC pilot with a little warbird experience, a little variance in CG should not trouble you in the least.
@@Chris-kt8rw Thanks for the response. I'll do a little research on rcgroups and see if there's anything there. But can I assume you are flying your modified version in the recommended 70-75mm range?
@@bill72pa Ok, because you asked. ;) I put a 3300 4s battery in mine and balanced it inverted, wheels up and my CG is right at 75mm. With a bigger 4000 mah battery I think that CG moves forward a little to maybe 73mm. I will caveat those measurements however by saying I use Robart rubber wheels that are a lot heavier than stock wheels and I also have oleo struts so there is much more weight (when gear are up) that is behind the CG mark than a stock plane would have. In flight, mine flies well, but is a bit tail heavy. I prefer that because it allows me to land a little slower than a forward CG would. I think with a stock plane running the recommended battery size that 70mm would be a good starting CG.
@@Chris-kt8rw good info. Thanks so much.
Really nice. i'm thinking about getting one
Great job! I also have a Parkzone FW-190! May I ask what nosecone spinner and 3-blade prop did you use? The Parkzone version only comes with a 2-bladed spinner so I’m curious. I’m currently using an APC 11x8.5 but I’d like to convert to a 3-blade as well.
The spinner is the PZ stock piece. I cut two slots in it to for the Dynam 3 blade prop. I think it is a 13x7x3.
@@Chris-kt8rw thanks Chris! I bet you get this question a lot so I appreciate the response!
The retract tips are awesome Chris thanks. I'm working on some other upgrades as well... 100a esc and the prop drive motor but 3d printing the mount and 3d printing a dummy radial engine. New servos, paint and flaps... really appreciate the in site man. It helped a ton. I'll make a vid after I'm done and tag you....
I love this plane... it flies so good as well. I’m adding a sound mod to mine with the retracts you did. Thanks again Chris. You da man 🤪
Good stuff.... I have the same plane and the retracts bent on my first hot landing.... couldn’t get the replacements for the plane but since it’s been sitting for 3 years, I finally got around to having time to retro fit it. Much appreciated information. Nothing else is wrong with this plane. So glad I didn’t piece it out to build another.... I’ve just been flying my others and building my fleet.... it’s vids like yours that keep people into this great hobby. Thanks 🙏
Thank you for the kind words. This plane certainly deserves better components (mostly retracts) than it got. When my 1400mm FMS Hellcat was still flying I still preferred the Dynam.
great tips for anyone buying this plane under the Arrow name as that is the new manufacturer name. New paint job, same plane. I just unboxed mine after 3 years. Hope to have it in the air soon enough.
That's good info for folks still wanting this plane! Thanks for that and good luck and fair skies.
Hi!, I would like to do the same upgrade, which are the modifications you have done on the stock retract bay?, did you replace the servo of the gear door?
The plastic insert the retract screws into had to have a lot of cutting and shaving to remove enough material to get these new units to sit flush. My plane was in kit form when I got it so never had stock electronics. I added generic Hobby King 9 gram servos to open and close the gear doors. It took a little effort to get the wire push rod arm shaped correctly. I eventually deleted those servos and now close the doors with a stretchy elastic cord the gear leg pulls shut.
Hi Chris, thank you for your kind reply, my P-40 was a PNP (very bad accessories). Are you satisfied with these FMS?, any problems during landings until now?.
The FMS units have held up very well. In 2 years they have been completely reliable. They do have a slight amount of slop in the gear leg but it hasn't been a problem.
Hey Chris, great vids thank you. I just bought a Dynam Hellcat but am planning to run it with a 4s 4000mAh battery. Do you think the stock 40a esc can handle it or should I upgrade to a 60a esc. Many thanks.
Whiskey Jet, I strongly suggest you upgrade the stock Dynam ESC, both because your 4000mah battery is at the limit of the 40amp ESC's capabilities and that Dynam ESC's are low quality. Will it work? Yes, for a bit, before it eventually fails. Dynam ESCs should be used only with Dynam motors but as soon as you upgrade one part, replace the other too. The 40 amp limit is designed for the recommended 2200 to 3000 mah batteries. A 4000mah battery will push more amps and will stress the ESC at high throttle. Eventually the low quality Dynam ESC will fail. A 50 amp ESC provides some amp headroom and 60 amp is even better. Another issue with some Dynam ESCs is a engine stuttering problem they show. Again, some do it, some don't. There have been reports that these ESCs don't work well with other brand motors. My advice is fly it stock and try to stick to the recommended battery sizes. If you want to fly a 4000mah, try not to go to high throttle very much. A few short bursts won't hurt it but a 4 minute flight at max might.
Good to know, thank you so much for the reply Chris.
Great flight! Now we can get parts from Arrows T-28.
Thinking of putting flaps on mine. Do a video on yours and how you cut the flap into. Great flight. Hope to see more. Got a 11 Hobby T-28 cut hole in top vent of cowl.
Chris, thanks for your retract tips! I finally got around to replacing them, and they work awesome (no bending) on hard landings. Now, I just need to rake them forward a little bit. It's still difficult to taxi this plane on the field. Thanks again!
Nice mod. Is that the parkzone 3 blade? If so what spinner are you using? Thanks
joshhahn1380 That is the Dynam 13x7x3 prop and the stock Parkzone spinner. The spinner needs to be converted to a 3-bladed unit by having 2 blade holes cut into it but that's easily done if you are careful. A word of caution: the stock Parkzone motor and ESC (BL15 950KV and 30 amp) are not powerful enough to swing this Dynam prop. I use a Hobby King G15 710kv motor and at least a 40 amp ESC on 11.1volt (3s) for respectable performance.
Chris Kenney thanks
Hey Chris, awesome video. I have this plane, too, and swapped out the motor (Detrum 650kv) drop and fit replacement, and 70a esc from my FMS P-51. But what I'm really trying to figure out is how to replace the retracts. I've searched youtube, and there are only a couple vids with this mod. The others required mods to the wing to fit the new retracts. Were there any mods that needed to be done to fit those FMS retracts into the Hellcat? I use a grass field, so the struts were bent on the 2nd flight. My only video (3rd flight) ended with the struts completely bent.
Frank's Fly Time RC Agreed, Dynam retracts and struts aren't up to the task except if you can grease your landings every time. As far as I can remember, the retracts were not hard to fit to the plane; minor fitting at worst. To run scale sized wheels however required the wheel bay to be opened up a bit more, so I tried to make those cuts as neat and professional as possible.
Chris Kenney Thanks Chris. I was curious and wanted to find out before buying a set.
i really like this plane, but ive noticed that the landing gears are very narrow, compared to the dynam corsair and mustang, it looks unstable during landing specialy when turning during landing im getting one of this thou
Whoa! How do I always miss stuff like this? VERY nice job all around, especially the gear, which I think is the "weakest" part of the plane (meaning, not as nice as the plane is) I'm going to try that motor and prop, since I always want more power, and that gear setup you did. I just happen to LOVE the way this plane flies, so I think all the mods are worth it. We also put a windshield in ours, with the cam in the cockpit, which made some great footage for our Dynam F6F video. Since you're obviously into this, you might want to look at an airbrush- you can get them with a compressor on ebay for about $70, and it's well worth it for doing smoke stains and other stuff (especially like German "spotty" camo paint jobs) You just need to thin the Lowes or HD house paint samples with some water
Good job looks really well done nice shine Looks good.
Very nice flight and landing now i cant wait to build mine,,i have the Flightline Tigercat and it flys like a dream but its very big i have to break it down to go to the field ,but this look and will fit right in my truck,,ok thanks for a great video,,Kevin

are you running 4s 2600 or 4s 4000 and if your running the 4000 not to heavy? cause i have 4s 3600 and 4000
K-QUAD RC Mine loves 4s 4000 batteries. Even with a bigger motor and a crash proofing kit mine flies great with the 400 gram 4s 4000 packs.
yours flies super great job well done,,i will change out the servos to the emax metal 9gm
Chris great video and well expained review i have fms ,flightline, rochobby but no Dynams but i took a shot and got this the other day for 159 at hhoby, looks really nice have'nt put it together yet i gave a clear coat finish and it came out awesome the foam just took it in,,well thanks for the video checking out your other video on the mods,,Kevin
K-QUAD RC Thanks! Did you get the version 2? It comes with factory installed flaps. I hope you like the other vids.
oh yes iam wondering why i got flaps,,you just answered that ,,mine came today,,i was always caution with dynam but watching your videos and looking at the plane iam happy
K-QUAD RC Dynam foam is excellent; the electronics not so much. You may eventually decide to upgrade the motor and ESC like I did.
yes iam going to now that i watched you,,lol
Nice flight and that is a ballzy take off and landing strip you have there - nice work getting up and back down :) I run the same set up re motor but I've not tried the shim mod, is there more or less prop noise with the shim and obviously its got more top speed with the mod.
Ben Miz That is my least prefered runway direction. I almost never fly that way now. With the mod the prop has more of a roar. The amps and watts go up too and it is harder on my batteries. I still use the mod now but go with the smallest zip ties I have, about 1mm thick. The speed is still impressive, batteries are puffing less and flight times are longer.
www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Gloss-Triple-Thick-Polyurethane-Case-of-2-281541/205446624 Gloss Triple Thick Polyurethane or the thin version www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-2-pt-Clear-Gloss-Oil-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-242175H/202067170?
I looked at my local Menards and can get a long drill bit for $11 and of course I can get carbon fiber rods at the local hobby shop. I dont know what the killer planes kits go for but,its a no brainer. The impovements are always a good thing. Nice plane. I always replace the dynam led bulbs with an Turnigy kit with the flasher generator. Its really easy to do and I use the existing wiring.
How does the 1100 compare to the fms1400 in flight? The FMS is three times the price, is it worth it? thanks.
rossimessi1 There is a definite difference between the 1400 and 1100mm. The bigger one is a lot heavier, handles wind much better, has more presence and handles more like a real plane; less toy like. The little ones are better for those with small transport vehicles, limited flying space, smaller batteries. Is the bigger one worth it? Yes, IF you have a large enough area to fly it, larger 4s (3000-5000 mah) batteries and more technical skills, because it is more intricate. It needs smooth landings too or you'll destroy your landing gear. Neither size is ideal on grass.
Thanks for the detailed reply. Been watching videos of the FMS1400 on grass (rcinformer and others). Seems to cope alright. Though that is the V4 with suspension retracts. What would you say is the max wind you'd take the 1100 up in? It's nearly always windy here. thanks
rossimessi1 over 15-20 mph would be problematic I think. the larger one will land on grass, if it is manicured and you grease it every time.
Sweet plane.. Good flying.. The sound system works nice..
Pretty cool. The sound system cost as much as the plane :(
Great job on the mods. I love that Killer planes crash-proofing.. Did it to my Dynam Hellcat and made one tough bird.. Good fix on the retracts. I may swap mind out soon..
Good mod ideas, I have this plane as well and have to work out some bugs myself.
Nice mods you did there! The only issue I have with this model from Eleven Hobby are the servos sticking out of the back of the fuse. Not sure why they and even FMS do this, yet the Durafly T-28 has them hidden which makes it look much better in my opinion. Good mods overall, thanks!
Nice flight!! Did the 11x7x3 reduce your flight time?
sorry, 11x6x3
Awesome mods you did there. Rustoleum is like polycrylic?
Multirotor Go Yes. it's found at Walmart and all hardware stores
Guys is this a hard plane to fly?
I re-maiden it yesterday, did the same barrel roll crash right after takeoff as the first maiden :/
It sounds like you didn't have enough speed built up before applying elevator to yank it off the ground. Let it get fast on the ground first. Keep it straight down the runway and build throttle to at least 3\4 . Maybe try 1\2 flaps on take off too to give more lift.
And for the 2200 bat placement, you said flush to the front of the wood tray? The front would be all the way froward right?
Yes, just not overhanging the front, into the nose cavity. Best way to check CG (center of gravity) is put the battery in, retract the gear into the wing and balance upside down at the spot called out in the manual. 45-50mm from the front of the wing, where the color changes from white to orange.
Slide the battery forwards or back until the plane balances on two fingers, placed on the CG points on the wings.
Did you put the 2200 in the middle of the velcro? And how does the T-28 react to flaps?
I put the 2200 mah 3 cell battery forward on the wood tray so the front of the battery is flush with the front of the wood tray. I did not push the battery into the motor compartment. This T-28 balloons "nose up" if you deploy flaps when the speed is too high. I still use about a 3 percent down elevator mix on full flaps.
I have burned up 2 580 motors on 5S
Yes, I never even tried my 580 kv on 5s. There were too many reports of burn ups.
Nice work'
Thanks Charles, and thanks for the sub!
Very nice Chris ..fantastic control on the fast low passes
Nice flying!
I have my eye on this bird but I can only hand launch and belly land on grass. What are your thoughts about belly landing her on grass? Im worried about that 4 bladed prop, all of my others have just a 2 bladed prop.
If you protect the bottom of the plane with packing tape, the leading edge of the wings too, it should belly land great. You are correct; I would definitely look for a good 2 blade prop for longevity. The Parkzone Extra 300 prop would be a good choice. Take the tail wheel off it you do. There is no need to risk breaking it.
Thanks for the info. Happy landings.
Can you tell me your elevator mix on the flaps :) This may be my next plane, just went everything right for the first flight.
I use FRSKY Taranis and at full flap deflection I have 5% down elevator mixed. I think it is half that at half flaps.
Better than Eflite 1.2 T28?
I don't have any other small Trojans so I can't comment on that. The eflite will be more expensive, but you get the AS3X receiver. I recommend you check RCGroups threads on this one, the eflite, Dynam and Durafly. I think this one is a great flier and value.
What would be the best T-28 around 200$, I think it's the next plane after my parkzone sport cub (Had 30+ flights on it)
This one fits the bill. Check out RCGroups threads on the different T-28s in thus size range: Eleven Hobby, Dynam, Durafly, Parkzone, eflite
Hi there, so you'r using a 100A ESC and what motor - stock ??? Thanks in advance.
The motor is not stock for this plane. It is the FMS PAEP 4258 550kv motor from their F3A Olympus airplane. In stock form, this Mustang is a 4 cell plane. The upgrade motor is designed for 5-6 cell batteries. I used a 5 cell in this video.
Thanks Sarge! I don't have the eflite but imagine they are roughly the same. :)
Dennis, I have a Castle Creations 100 amp in the plane. This gives me enough headroom for the zip-tie mod on 5s, which is what I usually run. This flight was without the zip-tie for comparison only. With the mod I am pulling around 93 amps with 18.5 volt Nano-Tech 4500mah 35C batteries.
That's 93 amps static load. It'll be less that that in the air.
Nice flying though!
Stock ESC? And what big of a battery are you running?
