Carl Sagan and the Adolescence of a Materialist Mindset
This is the first in a series of videos to search for the wisdom humanity will need for a more beautiful future. I will explore and excavate historical and contemporary thought leaders with a scientific and naturalistic lens I call Oika to see if I can expand on their thinking with ecological intelligence. I will also integrate the lived-experience and lifestyle (Oika people and projects) wherever appropriate. The goal is to holistically manifest ecological thinking, doing, and being.
A signature element of this series is an explicit acknowledgement of the difference between explanation and meaning-making. Explanation is seen as what science does when it seeks to answer useful questions of what and how through methodological investigation and the generation of knowledge. Meaning-making, by contrast, seeks to provide meaning to that knowledge by putting it into human-cosmic (ecological) context and imagining how we derive prosperity from it. In short, explanation generates facts and knowledge while meaning-making cultivates wisdom.
The search begins with one of my intellectual and spiritual heroes, Carl Sagan. We've been around the sun 28 times without him.
Have you ever noticed that there are just some people who seemed to be especially "changed" by Carl Sagan? Those who go so “ga-ga” over him, that even ten years after his death, they still blog, gush, and talk nearly incessantly about him? And these are often the people least likely to otherwise worship, idolize, or even get excited about a professional athlete, celebrity, rock star, authority or politician.
I’m one of those people. My life-trajectory was tugged and defined by the gravity of Carl Sagan. He gave all of us reasons to cherish the pale blue dot and “all that ever was or is or ever will be.” He personified the Cosmos - literally. He was a gifted scientist, communicator, dad, and human being. He moved millions to see.
But what’s more incredible than how many he didn’t move: how many somehow missed the message. Carl Sagan articulated poetic and accessible accounts of reality that were so beautiful and simple that once you understood what he was saying, you would never see the world the same way again. Everything was meaningful and awesome.
I often wonder how much better our world would be if he were still here to offer his insights and guidance. But he is gone. And the rest of us who did hear him can only forge ahead, doing what we can to open people’s eyes.

River Wisdom Teaches Us How To Live Happy Lives

@RichBlundell explains how geologic forces hold wisdom that can show how to live more fulfilling lives. Beautiful. Earth Stories are experiencers beyond ourselves, part of our (more than human) being. Referring as well (in another context) to the visionary novel of Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451, where at the end, in a society where books are forbidden, banned communities live in nature and pass books to eachother and next generations by knowing them by heart and reciting them. Eventually we are the books, we are the stories.

Yes! I assume it’s a small “Atlantic Flying Fish,” which is one of many species in the order Belionifoimis, because it’s the only one I know of that comes close to shore (aka the neritic zone). This little guy got a little too close!!

@@ImGoinHammy Ya I was so surprised when this little guy landed on the beach in front of me. I used to see them a lot when I was sailing offshore (the ship is in some of the videos on my channel). I'd get up in the morning and find one or two on deck that had landed on deck during the night. They made great sandwiches. One of the really cool things about flying fish (there are so many cool things) is their lower tail fin (also called the caudal fin). It's really long and stiff, like a popsicle stick. You can see it in the fish in my video but I would have showed it but I wanted to get him back in the water asap. It's so cool. After they have been flying for a bit, the put just their lower tail fin back in the water and wiggle it for some extra propulsion. When you're way offshore you can watch them for hours. I could watch them for hours.
