Zacherley 104th Birthday video (Mike Gilks)
Been wanting to do something special for Zach's B-day for sometime but caring for my 99 yr old mom at home leaves little time for anything else. Luckily, my daughter, Rachel came to my rescue. I sent her the pics and song and she did all the heavy lifting and a really wonderful job, as always.
This time i wanted to use our version of his classic, ''Dinner With Drac''. I was a bit concerned when we did it, as this was sacred territory for him and i wanted his approval of what i was doing with it. He didn't comment on it while recording. He treated all we did back then with the same good natured, positivity and professionalism that he always brought to the table. It wasn't til years later when he said, in passing that he preferred our version over the original. I felt SO vindicated. If he liked it, i must be doing something right.
In listening to it now, with fresh ears, i think back on those sessions. Drummer, Jan Uvena breathed life into this track with his incredible style and energy...just LISTEN to those fills! And how can you describe the impact sax player, Paul Kendall had on all this? Every take only got better. This is also where my late brother, Rich showed what a terrific producer he was. I was happy with almost everything Paul did but it was Rich who kept saying, "That was great, but could we do one more take with a little more kick, Paul"? I was a little embarrassed but he just KEPT ON FINDING new places to go with it, just when you thought it couldn't get any better. Incredible to witness live. Speaking of which, the cherry on top was getting to stand next to Zach while performing that vocal...How many people have gotten to be this close to him when he's working? The careful articulation of every word and texture to his voice. Sometimes i'd offer him something to drink and he'd say no, he liked the dry quality his voice had at the moment. And those ad-lib moments when he'd look over at me and make a face...just pure magic. I was a kid again.
So Happy Birthday to the man himself...The living blueprint for every horror host who walked, limped or shuffled in his long, long shadow. I love you, Zach.

''Door into Summer'' guitar tutorial (Mike Gilks) The Monkees
มุมมอง 2.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a deep cut by The Monkees titled ''Door Into Summer''. Serious fans always ask for this one and info on it is hard to find. I have a lead-sheet that i mention was written out a while ago to which i've since made some small changes, but clarify during the video. I can email it to anyone interested, just LMK. Hope some die hard fans have fun with this one...very satisfying to play!

This little tutorial video is in celebration of 'Better Call Saul' using this song during it's final season. Was also a nice tribute to Michael Nesmith in light of his recent passing. He would have LOVED this! For you fans of him and The Monkees, I pretty much stuck with his demo version of the song, but threw in The Monkees version intro to kick it off. Not at all difficult to play, but such a...
''Don't Call On Me'' (The Monkees) Mike Gilks version
มุมมอง 2553 ปีที่แล้ว
This song has been stuck in my head since i was a kid and part of the target audience of 9 and 10 yr olds that the TV show was designed to appeal to. ''Don't Call On Me'' by Mike Nesmith. It was so different from any of their other songs, i couldn't even tell it was him singing it at first. Always loved how the melody works against the chord structure. Even used my old '65 Fender Electric 12 st...
"Dear Boy" by Paul McCartney [Mike Gilks version]

This song has been bouncing around in my head since i was a kid. From Paul's classic RAM album in the early 70's. I recall the critics totally beating it up back then, but since has become one of his masterpieces , loved by millions [ Yet, nobody remember who the critics were! ] and rightfully so. It's as though music was just exploding out of his head during this period...one of my all time fa...
Lonely Boy (Andrew Gold) unique electric guitar cover by Mike Gilks
มุมมอง 2684 ปีที่แล้ว
This has always been a favorite song of mine since i was a kid...A perfect arrangement, lyrics and melody thru-out. Gold once said it's the only song he ever performed live where he got standing ovations in the middle of the song! Anyway, i tried to pull as much of the content into a single guitar part as i could. So much fun to play and sing...hope you enjoy!
"Burn to Shine" Tutorial {Ben Harper} By Mike Gilks

Am posting this for one of my private students who lives out of state, but hopefully it will be helpful to anyone else interested in this song. There's also a written transcription to go along with it, but if you hone in on the hand movements and placement, it's not hard to understand. I took the intro slide guitar solo & turned it into a regular hands on solo...matches up very well to the slid...
Island Time by Jamtown Tutorial {Mike Gilks}

Here's a brief explanation of this very groove oriented song...not a lot to it, but fun to play! I incorporate a finger-style approach that allows you to include the bass guitar line into the guitar chords for a really nice reflection of the song's arrangement. You can also just play the guitar part if desired and is included in the video...The song is basically a loop of chords that plays over...
"What Am I Doing Hangin Round" (Monkees- Mike Gilks family)
มุมมอง 3.6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the most underrated, yet enduring Monkees songs, I think. Mike Nesmith was at the forefront of the burgeoning Country/Rock movement in the 1960's, paving the way for groups like Poco, The Eagles, etc in the near future. Nez performed lead vocals on this this one, written by Michael [Wildfire] Murphey. It was featured often during The Monkees TV series, but never got the recognition it de...
"If I Needed Someone" Beatles (Mike Gilks family version}
มุมมอง 1175 ปีที่แล้ว
One of my favorite early George Harrison tunes, If I Needed Someone. Thought i'd try doubling the guitar parts using my '65 Fender electric 12 string. One has a capo on the 7th fret, like on the record and the other, no capo...the end result is a true wall of sound! Also used my Hofner bass that my wife got me last Xmas to round out the Beatles vibe. Thanks to my Daughter, Rachel and her fiance...
"You Told Me" by The Monkees (Gilks family version)
มุมมอง 2475 ปีที่แล้ว
A little Monkee love on a rainy Sunday night (from 4-14-19). One of my all time favorite Michael Nesmith songs from their "Headquarters" album in 1967. It held the #1 spot for two weeks, right up until The Beatles dropped their Sgt Peppers LP and blew everyone out of the water...AGAIN! This was also the first album where they were in control & recorded their own instruments for the first time. ...
"She's a Rainbow" by The Rolling Stones [Mike Gilks tribute]
มุมมอง 1735 ปีที่แล้ว
Had some fun with the Acapella ap on my daughter's phone with this unusual Rolling Stones song recently. Been hearing it a lot on TV commercials lately and has always been one of my favorites by them. During that brief phase of their career where they were emulating The Beatles late 60's psychedelic sound. Came out pretty well considering a lot of it was first takes. Hope you enjoy!
"Give Me Love" By George Harrison [Mike Gilks & family version]
มุมมอง 896 ปีที่แล้ว
One of my all time favorite George Harrison songs that just keeps getting more relevant with each passing day. The message it conveys is more important now than ever before. SO much fun to play and sing and my daughter, Rachel nails all those soaringly spiritual Harrison harmony vocals like a homing pigeon! Hope you enjoy....
"Calm Before the Storm" By Mike Gilks
มุมมอง 546 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the third addition to the series of finger style instrumentals I've written over the last couple of weeks. They just seem to keep arriving almost effortlessly... I'm channeling my inner Chet Atkins / Scotty Moore on this one...love that classic combination of palm muting with spring reverb. Can never get enough! I find myself using the technique on songs that don't even call for it...ju...
"Relentless" [Finger pick by Mike Gilks]
มุมมอง 546 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's another one i made up to use as an aggressive finger picking exercise for my guitar students. I call it " Relentless" because it's...relentless. It features a rapid high string pick pattern right from the start that's kind of like hopping onto a moving train and maintains thru-out. On top is a very Spaghetti-Western like melody on the bass strings. One of my lessons said it sounded like ...
