Dario's Model Builds
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 พ.ย. 2021
I started this new channel to document some of my model builds from up here in our nation's capital in the Great White North. I only got back into the hobby a few years ago and still developing a lot of new skills and trying out new methods and tools (mostly learned from other TH-camrs out there). Feel free to comment on anything (the good and the bad).

That "gap" behind the canopy was accurate, it was a feature of the real aircraft. You didn't correct it, you made it accurate. Consider doing some research!
* made it inaccurate
Nice work Dario, looks really good buddy, 😎👍
I got this kit as a door prize at a model show. I don't think I would have bought it. Anyway I built it pretty much to match the box art and it actually turned out pretty good.
@@danieljohnson9351 These weird models are not everyone's cup of tea but I enjoy all types of models. I like the fact that when building these you don’t have to worry about accuracy or detail and you can just have fun. Thanks for watching.
@dariosmodelbuilds oh, I do like this kind of stuff. I have been collecting Weird Ohs that are reissues of the original 60s kits. Lots of fun.
@@danieljohnson9351 Great as I have a few more Weird-Ohs in the stash and of of those Silly Surfers.
Those kits usually have very messy seam lines but you did a fantastic job on it and painting it, the details on the mouth and faces look great. Very nicely done. Hope you can find the Godzilla kit now.
I hate seams and go to absurd lengths to try to get rid of them. 🤪
That is cool!! Goes with the Godzilla Go Kart!!! Very cool! Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
Thanks. Ironically, of the six models in this series, the Godzilla Go Cart is the only one I DON'T have. Hope to get one of those someday and complete the series. Thanks for watching.
@dariosmodelbuilds my wife did the Godzilla go-kart, way too cool of a kit, I think I'd like to do one too!!!
@@carouselofcrazychrisb Just watched it now. A wife who builds models is a keeper. A wife who builds Godzilla models is a one in a million gem. Happy holidays.
Kong turned out really nice Dario, Merry Christmas to you and your family, 🎁🎄
Thanks Tom. Wanted to finish this one last night because, for me at least, the insanity starts in a few hours. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well.
Cool model. 🦍
Can I have the reference photos? Can you post a link to them in the comments?
I don't have links to the photos I used. Some I got by googling "Avro Arrow" and some of them I got from "The Aviation Titan" "Facebook group (facebook.com/aviationtitan).
Hello Dario. I finish this kit years ago. It went together very good. The problem was the decals where the gold stripes did not lay down. I spent hours getting them to look good but it worked out. Believe it or not I used light tan to match the gold. I painted mine Testors metallic blue. I used Tamiya transparent yellow on all the gold plated parts and it made them pop. Over all a nice kit, highly recommended.
I know all about using Tamiya transparent yellow for gold. Check out my Surf Woody video where I use it on Chrome. In my next video (hopefully finishing soon) I used to over some Chrome paint! Works awesome. As for decals, while I did not have any when I built the Paddy Wagon, I later got some generic "police' decals from a friend and put them on the kit. I mentioned it as an "intermission" in one of my videos, but can't recall which. The Paddy Wagon is still best fitting kit I've built.
I'm working on this. The problem is what color to paint it to keep it true to Roth. Every color pic shows a different red. I read the original car used raspberry color. I found some finger nail paint that comes close.
I have to admit that I did not do any research at all on the 'true' paint colour for this one. But I sure do understand the frustration when trying to be as realistic as possible and finding conflicting information. I'm going through the exact same thing trying to select and purchase the right 'red' for the Monkeemobile which I plan to build either as my next kit or the one after that. In my case some of the confusiion/differences are due to more than one car being built (one was used primarily for the TV series scenes and the other as a promotional car for events). In the end you have to just go with the colour that feels right for you. Good luck.
Looks great. Can't believe you made it through that. My nerves are shot just looking at it and thinking about all that little thin chrome. I think I'm more built to build screw bottom promos. Spay body, interior and chassis and screw together! Excellent work my man and must not have hurt you too bad if you're talking about wouldn't mind doing it again. You got my approval!
What can I say? I'm a glutton for punishment. On the other hand I do learn a lot form these challenging kits and feel that I could do better the next time. Live and learn as they say. Oh, and whenever I do build one of thise harder kits I usually follow it with a simpler one to regain my sanity. 😄 Thanks for watching.
Bummer about the decals, but it still looks great. Interestingly, I've seen 2 of these - the original at the Petersen Museum, and then there's a tribute at the The Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Yes, there was a discussion in the comments here whether the one in the Petersen Museum was the original (later confirmed). I did not know there was a replica in Nebraska though. Thanks for watching.
Wow remember trying to build this as a kid early 60's. Though I enjoyed also was my 1st memory of real frustration. Thanks for posting
This was my first attempt but I can just imagine what this must have been like for a kid to build. I'm glad I waited 50 years to build it now instead of back then. Thanks for watching.
I absolutely love it Dario ❤😊
Thanks. May have one or two more grey hairs but it was worth it.
Saying this kit is a challenge is an understatement. I built this kit but ruined the decals big time. I ended up removing them and used green flames instead. It turned out excellent. I'd like to sent a photo sometime.
@@DayTwo-w8n Fear not as it is one of, if not the hardest set of decals around. Many modellers don't even try to put them on so you're already ahead of the curve. This is why I like making these videos. People, myself included, see what I did wrong or see better ways of doing things and we all learn something and hopefully do better next time. Thanks for watching.
👌👌
Turned out real nice despite the problems. Well done, broski.
Thanks Ed. Yes, despite the problems I'm happy with it. The decal issue bothers me but at least that's at the back of the car so not noticeable when sitting on me shelves.
That engine looks like the same engine in the revell Willy's coupe with opening every thing and the Anglia Buick nail head
It could be. I'm not sure where Ed Roth got the engine from when he built it but I'm sure it's documented somewhere. Thanks for watching.
Awesome stuff cool kit 👌 the build c turned out Brilliant, we enjoyed just subscribed #695, Cheers 🍻 KC Cradle Mountain 🏔 Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 🦘 🏔 🪃🍻
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks mate.
@dariosmodelbuilds absolutely 💯 % and you're welcome 😊 🙏 🤗
I was lucky to see the real car…. The original not a clone at the Peterson museum vault last year
So the one at the Peterson museum is a replica? I thought it was the original because looking close at the pictures do show some wear and tear. But I guess that could be 'faked' as well. I wonder if that also explains the different shift knob (sabre handle versus ball). Thanks for watching.
@ no sorry I must now have made myself clear….. the one in the Peterson is the original
@@KrowKustoms OK thanks for clearing it up.
Ive got to watch this! Many have tried and failed with this kit….. including me!!
I'm not sure my build was a total 'success' either, just OK. I checked out some of your 'Kustoms'. Very nice work. Subbed now.
Thanks Dario. Interesting build and I enjoyed your comments about the process.
Thanks Thomas. If nothing else others can learn from my mistakes and the other issues with the kit. I do try to watch videos from others who have built kits before I start my own and have avoided issues with that knowledge. I hope others benefit from my videos that way.
I enjoyed your build! Brave to tackle this now-rare kit. I have a couple in my stash from the 1980s when they were in every shop. Mine unfortunately are the original issue where some of the surface detail on the top of the wing was supposed to be on the bottom. You have the later corrected one. I was just screaming REPLACE THE DECALS because you can get so much better RCAF insignia and lettering on the aftermarket now, even some specific sheets for the 105 with some hunting. Despite that, your plane came out nice.
Hobbycraft reissued this kit several times, making improvements along the way. Mine is not the best either as the issue with the air scoops was corrected in a later release, but I can't complain either as it was certainly a nice kit. As for the decals, the minor flaking I had on those i put on are pretty much hidden and for those long black stripes that I could not use I'm hoping to get generic 'black stripe' decals. Hitting my local hobby shop later tomorrow and with any luck they will have some. Thanks for watching.
I like it Dario, love the blue and white 👍
Thanks. While they are nice colours, I can't take credit for them as I was only using the supplied decals and trying to mimic the real car. I do think it would look nice if yellow was used instead of white although the decals are somewhat transparent so the blue/green would probably change into some other colour.
I build the same car with the Robin Hood Fink kit except the tires were cartoonish on it. It was quite finicky and fragile to put together and mine didn't have the decals so I airbrushed the colour along the edges. I think you did a great job on a difficult build.
Yes I remember that video as that was how I learned it was essentially the same car/body. You made it look easy though.
I built the 3 Hot Rod Magazine versions of this, Beatnik Bandit & Mysterion in my early teens... I still have emotional damage!! 😬😬😬😂🤣
Built the Beatnik and the Road Agent before this (see videos) and I thought they were just as finicky. Mysterion is in my stash so will probably get to that next year after I 'recuperate" from this. ⛑
@lmcdasc Good luck my friend, I'll be watching for the build!! 👍🏾
That turned out nice. Too bad about the decals I'm not a big fan of Microsol, Walther's SolvASet works much better.
I can't blame the Microsol on this one as it did what it was supposed to. I think it was my placement of the decals to begin with. I should have placed them much lower and then they would align better. Live and learn. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the shout out Dario. Those decals are aggravating , as if the kit wasn't challenging enough. Nice job my friend..
Not that my subs will make a big difference, but I'm sure some viewers will enjoy your builds, especially the very unique scratch builds. Still trying to get over that Surf'n'bird!
@dariosmodelbuilds soon as I get get your shop card, I'll give you a shout out on my channel
@@scaleplastichobbies Canada Post still on strike. It may be a while 😥
Great job on the Outlaw Dario, I built it, it's a challenge for sure, I used Tamiya pearl white, so Ed originally called it the Excalibur, hence the sword handle shifter, it was on the original car, I don't know if that's the original car in the museum or a recreation 🤔
The Excalibur part explains a lot. Thanks for pointing it out. While I can't be sure that museum Outlaw is the real McCoy, when you look closely at some of the pictures, there is clear wear and tear and aging shown. Then again it may be 'faked' aging. I'll dig around a bit more on the history of the car as I am genuinely curious.
Well done. I've got this kit in the stash. Can't quite figure out what I want to do with it.
Thanks. Unlike some of the other monster kits, there is not too much you can add or modify with the kit. Those who have tend to just add trees and shrubs. The good news is that this kit looks great on it's own so you can't go wrong. The hardest part is figuring out which shade of green you want the Creature to be, and how much shading and color accents. But its a really fun and trouble free build.
it is so sad that small creators like this man and many others spend painfully long periods of time assembling these fine craft, only for some kid making a phonk edit in 4 minutes gets 1 million views. what happened to youtube man?
Well at least you got to enjoy this. I don't have 1 million views 😁 but I enjoy making them and others enjoy watching them, and that's all that counts.
Great results - I especially like the attention you paid to that ridge brow on his forehead. That bothered me on the original as a kid, and again on the one that's currently in my stash, waiting for me. Gave me food for thought on how to approach it.
When I search online these days I see that most model builders fix the forehead issue. Most while try to remove it entirely as I did, but some just make it much smaller. I hope you have as much fun building yours as I did mine. I just picked up a Mummy kit on Monday to add to my stash. Definitely more monsters to come on my channel. Thanks for watching.
Nice work on Canada's version of our TSR2. Our governments were so short sighted.
Thanks for the shoutout, great mail call. Have fun with the Aurora Planet of the Apes figures.😊
Nice shoutouts, cool kits..
Well done with a kit that is not the best to start out with. I built one as a kid and another a few years ago as a gift for my uncle. The kit is not without its charm but it is definitely a kit from 40+ years ago. I still think people are crazy to pay the prices I have seen for this kit but I suppose if you must have an Arrow....
I can't understand why other companies have not put out any newer Arrow kits. It's such a universally lauded aircraft and recognized as one of the best looking planes. It's talked about on other channels often enough. (PS: I heard you were one of the scheduled local TH-camrs that were going to present a panel at the last Ottawa 'Armoury' show at the end of September and was hoping to meet you. Unfortunate that you had to cancel.)
@ I was scheduled to be there but I caught a wicked cold and I didn’t want to cough all over everyone. I really wanted to go, it’s one of my favourite shows.
You have an amazing collection. The paper model is cool. I can imagine that with a 3D printer there is almost no limit to what you could do.
I have a few other Apes items not shown. The papercraft models, when properly designed and constructed, can be amazingly lifelike. But just like plastic models, there are techniques and tricks to learn and employ. They can also be just as frustrating when dealing with small parts. 😧
Thanks for the shout out Dario, you have a nice Planet of the Apes collection!!!
Thanks. Maybe too much in that collection. 🐒
Good vid about these kits. I have several of each of them in my collection. They do build up nice too. I remember when these where first released by Polar Lights and sold at ToysRUs. They were not good sellers and went to clearance pretty quick. I paid about $5.00 each for mine. This is same reason they haven't been reissued again. Also, great POTA collection! Love seeing that.
There used to be a HUGE (2 floor warehouse) model store in Montreal where I saw these kits about 20 years ago. They were a bit pricy at $25 CDN so I did not buy them at first. But I wanted them badly and broke down. Had to send a good friend to purchase them for me as I was not in Montreal at the time. Glad I came to my senses.
Proper job on this vintage Arrow! Well done 💥👍💥
A lovely build of a beautiful plane.
Thanks Max. Means a lot to me you saying that. Trying to get a better pic for your "Viewer Submissions" :)
Awesome Job! I also have the same exact model kit that you have there. I haven't gotten around to building it yet but I'm hoping to get it done eventually one of these days. Also Palmiro Campagna has recently released a new book on the subject with it being a new 2nd Edition of his most latest title: "The Avro Arrow: For the Record". In that new 2nd Edition he's recently discovered some newly declassified U.S documents directly from U.S. archives, which finally help answer the question of whether or not the United States wanted Canada to continue the Arrow’s development. It's a very well researched read of a book and I would highly recommend picking it up if you ever get the chance to do so.
Just make sure you use that Decal Film solution and you should be fine. Hope you have as much fun with it as I did.
Well done build! I built the original Aurora kit, then transformed it into the monster from 'Night Gallery's' "Pickman's Model"! I covered the body area with fake fur, and resculpted the head to match the monster. i.pinimg.com/736x/84/d3/24/84d3244463f25fcedb91c0d90a6df9c2--night-gallery-tv-guide.jpg
The kit you built was the last and most correct version of the Hobby Craft Arrow. If you think this kit was basic....if you ever get the opportunity to see the original Aurora kit of the Arrow, now that kit from about '64 was basic!
I can just imagine how rough that Aurora kit must be given the year they made it, basically as soon as they knew what the plane looked like. Mine is the 199x kit from Hobbycraft but I know Hobbycraft put out a revised kit just a few years after mine with a slightly different decal set and they corrected the air intake issue I mentioned. The bottom of that newer box has color images of the paint schemes which my box does not have. You can see the later version in this video (bottom box at 5:07 time) th-cam.com/video/eGJN60EWna8/w-d-xo.html
You did an amazing job on this build, I think the panel lines look great to bring out the detail. Excellent work with the putty and sanding. I hate that part and I'm not good at it but your persistance paid off. Very nicely done. I like all the special effects in the video also, great shot with the pie. 😄😂
Thanks. Doing my best is why it sometimes takes me so long to build a model,. But I'd rather 'do it right' than rush it, especially for this model. Pieing 'the Dief' was definitely therapeutic. While puttying is rarely fun, I must say that I hate seem lines and do my best to get rid of them. This also takes time to cure and dry (depending on which putty I'm using) which also adds to the build time.
Nicely done, my man!
Thanks Jason. It took a while and definitely had it's hurdles, but I'm satisfied with the end result.
Turned out nice. I got your shopcard over the weekend..boy did it took its time to show up lol.
Thanks. Glad you received it. I sent your out in the same batch as others who got it long ago, so yours was definitely slower than the others. Better late than never.
Great job on a cool jet that never made production. Very advanced looking bird. Happy modeling. Bill
It was 'advanced' at the time which makes it's destruction all the more infuriating and sad. 😥
Looks good despite the issues!
Not perfect (are they ever?) but happy with the result.
Really nice!
Thanks for watching.
