The List went 3 - 0. Prepare for a follow up video!
We march for Macragge 🔥🔥
Good video. How’d you do in the RTT?
I have a pleasant answer for you in the pinned comment...
I’ve been looking for a competitively minded ultramarines player for ages. Do you lot have a discord I could join? I’m currently trying to build myself up to going to GTs and would love some input on my lists and plans.
Look for "the Realm of Ultramar" discord! It's not my discord, but you can tag me there.
@ thanks for the reply. I’ve joined now
18:58 Tigurius makes his unit -1 to hit in range and melee. He also LOVES the sternguard buff as his psychic attack is 2D6 2 6 2 2. Also if he fails hazardous he can use his FNP to negate some of the mortals. Not S tier but I think he can go up a tier in Gladius or firestorm or librarius task force
Tigurius is a Champion in the Librarius detachment! Quick note, "if he fails hazardous he can use his FNP to negate some of the mortals" this actually applies to ALL Librarians. The reason for that is because the Hazardous wounds are caused by a Psychic Attack and according to the FAQ, you are allowed to your anti-psychic feel no pain against them!
@ I remember hearing that but could not find the rule anywhere. Thank you for pointing me to the FAQ
subbed. good mix of knowledge and humor. WW are great. You just use the indirect for the first round. After that is a Missile Battery and works well for me.
Interesting list! I am myself a complete beginner to Warhammer 40k!
Enjoy yourself playing! New blood is always welcome!
Guilliman is s tier because double oath the ability to say my whole army gets +1 to wound against a 2nd target. Ontop of reroll hits. And it's free cp per turn so that could be grenades could be changing a units doctrine or a reroll id pay 200 for his abilities alone. Then your opponent has to play like he's coming back always. So your opponent will have to make the decision to commit to something that probably stands back up. But they can't ignore him because by t4 he makes his points back just by cp generation and double oath
A lot of things can go wrong (like missing the oath kill) and you always functionally play a 1700 point list if you include guilliman. It is embarrassing how easy it is to kill g-man, sometimes it happens by accident. 5 Jump Pack Intercessors can take him from 10 to 0 in one go if you are unlucky.
@brothertobias i disagree because t1-3 your not putting him anywhere near where he can actually be killed why would you put him in range of something like that t4 you go all out with him because at that point double oaths and cp usage has made his points. Your offensive strat is changing a units doctrine and defensive strat is reactive move/aoc
Great video, would love to see one for Vanguard Spearhead as that’s the one I mainly use with my Novamarines.
The Novamarines are an amazing Chapter! Serve the Primarch with pride! Vanguard content is coming, I'm getting a lot of requests.
Hey! Thanks for your content! I recently played Vanguard Ultramarines against Grey Knights (new detachment) and was obliterated, because I felt like Vanguard really struggles against a fully teleporting army with deep strikes. Just no matter how I tried to screen Centurions, he still charged them. Besides, dealing with 2+ saves and 4+ invuls was really crazy, I was barely dealing any damage. Do you feel the same way? What strategy would you advise against Grey knights? Thanks!
Hello Rotaienko, thank you for writing this comment I always appreciate questions like this. I'm sorry I can't phrase it better than this, but it actually just is "don't get charged". It is better to get a safe angle into something like 5 Strike Marines than an exposed angle into a dreadknight. If you really cannot screen the 6" charge stratagem consistently, maybe you should take a one or even two units of Infiltrators. Avoid the combat, but don't be too afraid of the shooting - Dreadknights aren't great at killing Centurions, unless all 6 of them get to shoot you cleanly. The new detachment lacks the Mists of Deimos stratagem from the index, so it easier for your meltas and grenades to move up and get a target. Dreadknights do not appreciate melta and nothing in Grey Knights appreciates grenades. The last piece of advice I could give would be to start your centurions off the board, to prevent your opponent from shooting you with turn 1 up-down.
@brothertobias happy new year!!
Missed the live stream last night Tobias but watched it with my breakfast this morning! Interesting list! Do you prefer GTF over Vanguard at the moment then? Will you do an updated Vanguard list?
The Vanguard isn't dead! I honestly think it's the best Ultramarines you can run, but I keep running into a problem with regards to my player skill on it. The Vanguard punishes mistakes hard. Vanguard content will continue, it is just that you (the viewers) have requested some Gladius content so I will provide it!
Awesome man, thanks so much for doing this!
we need a discord! More inceptors! I had a similar ultra list but i ran calgar + eradicators being deepstriked from ventris to rapid ingress. but also ran some lists without ventris, which frees up 200 pts
You can find me on the "Realm of Ultramar" Discord! Just tag me there and I will reply to you directly as fast as I can! Uriel isn't a 100% auto-include, but I still really like him in melee based detachments because the extra tax on stratagems is really annoying for your opponent. In Vanguard, Uriel is actually mandatory because of the Centurion synergy.
Great video. Thanks for the info!
This detachment is ok, I think personally there’s very few things that may work in here, obviously the Sternguard bomb but problem with that is we are easy to kill, so that unit will be wiped straight afterwards, there’s a heavy reliance on Libbys and unfortunately the basic vanilla libbys aren’t great or lead great units, Tiggy for myself UM is a great insert, he’d usually lead Sternguard but in this detachment most likely go with infernus for that free overwatch, Libby in terminator armour is one of the more powerful ones that can work in this, the normal Libby is best with Sternguard, after that I’ll be honest best o leave it with three Libby units (pushing 4) however if you are a UM you are going to have Guilliman so your leave it at 3, now problem I’m having is where does Uriel/Calgar fit into this, the CP generation + CP vect aura and DS delivery is very key to this detachment too, Uriel delivers that Tiggy + Infernus for AP-2 flamer shots and a free overwatch, Calgar gives us the flexibility to use more strats elsewhere on the board (compared to Guilliman whose within 12”) he has no synergy outside army wide buffing but can go with eradicators for general purpose anti everything
I think the way to build this Detachment is very different from how you build regular Space Marine lists. This might be a rare case in which you leave Calgar and Ventris at home, just because of how many points you are putting into Characters. Infernus Sound good, but I think Tigurius + Bladeguard make better use of the +2 movement and the Strength buff.
@brothertobias Salutations brother! I have been enjoying your content. As a newcomer to the game and lover of all things Ultramarine this tier list is much appreciated. I would love to see you give your takes on army list building and other instructions. Tbh, that’s what I’m struggling the most with now. Thanks and keep up the great work. Courage and Honor!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it I want to make more of my (more edited) content about the game, especially now that my old Gladius video needs a redo.
@ I would so appreciate that. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on each mini. Also with my birthday coming up do you have any advice on which kits to pick up? Thanks and keep up the great work!
@@coryskinner The utility units (Scouts, Infiltrators etc) are evergreen and almost always useful. Then, you should own all the Ultramarine Epic heroes, just in case. Maybe don't buy Sicarius, because there will be a new model at some point.
For Guilliman double oath, im pretty sure you have tk select both targets in the command phase. You cant until you kill #1 to select #2
Indeed, which is why I don't think this ability is as great as it sounds. if it works out (which it will most of the time) it's amazing. But if you get unlucky and end up with a stranded unit that relied on oath, you are in trouble.
Putting 5 devastators (with multimeltas) into a razorback in ironstorm is very powerful. They have an auto6 to hit thing, get twinlinked on the multimeltas when they pop out of the razorback, and then you can give them +1hit and even sustains (cheaper) via Guilliman and the super oath with +1wound. Its insane. I use this constantly to kill landraiders and other big stuff in 1 shot
Almost half of the value is also what happens immediately they do this. Since they have heavy and also gain ignore cover if they remain stationary, they get better the next turn meaning the opponent is almost forced to deal with them immediately. This allows the rest of my stuff to be relatively safe while the devastator and razorback soak up damage and attention
That is too many points invested into a package for my taste. A package which could just as easily be single Dreadnought getting a reroll on a multimelta. I'm not convinced by throwing extra Command Points *and* Oath into this already expensive combo. It's also very pre-measurable without assault+disembark or just plain assault.
@@brothertobias it's 120 + 95
I don’t get the chaplain hate. Having a character that allows his unit to be effective against non-oath targets is a huge benefit, not a flaw. Yes it was “better” before the oath buff, but it’s still great (particularly for non-guilliman builds). We need to kill more than one thing per turn!
I don''t hate the Chaplains in vaccum - You are completely right, having backups for your Oaths is *good* thing similar to how I rate the oath agnostic units like Ballistus and Eradicators My issues with the Chaplains are contextual - The regular Chaplain is replaceable. A Captain leads Assault Intercessors better,.A Judiciar leads Bladeguard better. Lethal hits are a better buff than +1 to wound for most of these low-strength units etc. Not to mention the Epic Heroes like Sicarius, Uriel or Tigurius. The Terminator Chaplain is flawed, because all Terminators require Oath. Assault Terminators with Hammers hit on 4+, so they need it for damage. Regular Terminators have a special rule against the Oath Target, so they need oath. This unfortunately means the Terminator Chaplain has pretty useless buff on these units. The Jump Pack Chaplain isn't bad at all, he suffers because Jump Pack Intercessors are an MSU skirmish piece, not a big damage brick and therefore don't need a Leader. And Vanguard Veterans are pretty bad. The odd one out is the Bike Chaplain - He benefits from the Outrider buffs (because the +1 strength and Damage apply to him) and gives them a good breakpoint to hit with +1 to wound at S5. Maybe he should be higher, but I need to see if multiple of these units perform in Stormlance. And if they do, I suspect it's because of another Chapter, not Ultramarines.
Also I think the Gladiator Valiant should have been an autocannon or plasma weapon for the main weapon. Just to differentiate it from the other two.
I would love improvements on the Valiant! It looks really cool.
You need to up your volume a bit. Really low.
Gravis Captain with blade driven deep. Leading 10 heavy intercessors holding ground on the no mans land objective.
I think the 30 point attachment for the Terminator Librarian is kinda eh. But Pyromancy giving them 1 AP on Storm bolters makes them kinda scary. Add in sustained hits, he is pretty nice. Definitely B Tier for sure in the Libarious Conclave. Plus you can give them either Lethal Hits for the Storm Bolters, or potentially make the Powerfists S10 which is solid.
Also Deathwatch Terminators are what you want outta Terminators. Letting them take 3 special weapons.
Letting regular Terminators use all three heavy weapons you get in the box would be my #1 suggestion on how to fix them.
Was not expecting to watch the whole stream, but I did! You've got a great mix of good analysis and funny presentation. What do you think of Judiciar with blade driven deep (infiltrator strat) in Vanguard spearhead to secure a whole chunk of the map prior to turn 1? If you hide them behind a ruin, they can only be charged. And with fights first, they seem like they are going to wreck most things.
Thank you for your patronage! Judiciar + Bladeguard is a perfectly servicable unit to infiltrate forward. But in specifically Ultramarines I would always infiltrate a unit led by Marneus Calgar. They don't have fights first, but you are so durable with the extra models and get fallback+dostuff (which Vanguard Spearhead doesn't natively get). Your other options outside of Ultramarines is a Gravis Captain with 6 Flamestorm Aggressors. That is a really scary unit to sit in front of your opponent turn 1.
What would you use now the Fire Discipline has gone, and with the new update??
it's still useful (Sustained Hits is good and Calgar would benefit from rerolling advances since he has advance+charge) but tough to justify at 40 points.
Hi. I think the scouts continue to be a bit higher. Their value is unmatched. The infiltrator + scout + go back to reserves is just too good imo. I played a tournament last weekend and I wouldn’t have done as well if I didn’t have them.
I consider one unit of Scouts downright mandatory, but they have fallen from grace since the last tier list. At 55 points for 5 they were almost a mandatory 3-of in every list. Now you take one and probably something with more Substance for further mission play, like Incursors, Reivers, Jump Pack Intercessors, Suppressors or the ATV. If you want to put Scouts further up in A tier regardless I wouldn't disagree!
Knowing Guilliman sweep is S8 does that change your raiting to S tier?
No, but it drops Brother Tobias into D for doofus.
One thing you didn't take into account when comparing Calgar's CP generation vs Guilliman's free stratagem. - Calger is +1CP on your turn, and it is +0CP if you discard one of your tactical objectives. So let's say that this will be on average +4CP. - Guilliman is a free stratagem per turn (yours and the opponent's). You can do a free AOC on your opponent's turn and an offensive stratagem during your turn. The maximum potential is +10CP. In reality it will probably be around 8CP, which is still the double than Calgar.
You do well to point this out. You are very correct that Tactical Secondaries (which are 99.9% of all games you play in Pariah Nexus) can bite against Calgar's CP ability. You also lose the ability to double-dip off of G-man. However, I think these two abilities are incredibly close, because: 1. Marneus Calgar's CP can be used to redraw the "bad" Secondary Card, which feeds straight into your Victory Score. Amassing a CP lead by scaring your opponent off in the early turns makes this very plausible to happen. 2. Positional Context: Every Stratagem you make free with Guilliman has to be a Stratagem used within 12" of him and therefore depends on both conditions: Wanting to use a stratagem and being within 12". Which is not a difficult set of conditions to fulfil, let's be clear. But it also means that whenever you don't actually have a use for a Stratagem, your "free" Stratagem was wasted. One thing that mildly annoys me about Guilliman's rule is that it doesn't work on Turn 1 if you go second. If you lose the starting roll, you only get 9 turns of aura instead of 10. A Tyranid Hive Tyrant always works, because it doesn't have to pass your Command Phase first.
wont your opponent delete the centurions before you can use guerilla tactics?
You almost exclusively skirt around the edges of the board and take very narrow firing angles in a way that leaves you minimally exposed. You are are also looking at a -1 to hit (in Vanguard), Toughness 7 model with a 2+ save and access to Armor of Contempt. The 4 Wounds are also really helpful to avoid damage from Damage 3 attacks, like Forgefiends, Predators and Exocrines. Don't get careless however; Riptides, Land Fortresses and Doomsday Arks can hurt you really bad if you go in without a plan.
Can I get a simplified version, please?!
Go to this time code 3:37:24 and press pause.
@brothertobias I did take a screenshot, but some of images i have no idea what unit.... I'm a noob 😂
@@himynameisjesse Check my TH-cam Community page, it features the tier list with all unit names on it.
I’ve been looking at the Librarian Conclave detachment a lot. I have to say I disagree with your placement of the Phobos Librarian. All though the reactive move + lone Op aura is a strong combo, Phobos Librarians remove something from every unit they attach to. (Except Eliminators but they suck). If you attach to Reavers they lose deep strike. If you attach to incursors they lose scout. Attaching to infiltrators is bad because then you have an 170 point unit in the mid board that can’t fight worth a damn. If they Phobos Librarian had scout or deep strike I think it would be in A tier but as is the unit is flawed.
The Phobos Librarian does debuff his unit, which is very true and I wish I would have mentioned it. However, I do think you want at least one (1) in your list to have a permanent-ish source of Psyker model to hand out the Strength buff to non-psyker units or throw the 18" mind bullet stratagem. Being able to debuff movement, throw grenades and be completely save doing it is good in my opinion. Outside of the Librarius, the Phobos Librarian has a specific niche, which is making your home objective immune to indirect fire. This isn't relevant right now, but we all know GW cannot stop printing broken artillery once per season. It is not unrealistic for a metagame close to the nightspinner fall of last year to return and those metagames really want a Phobos Librarian.
@@brothertobiasall fair points, thanks for the reply.
Thanks a lot for the Knowledge, I am a new w40k player, building my 1st ultramarine army and so far I have Guilliman, Liberarian, 2 redemptor dreadnought, 1 unity of primaris intercessors, and 2 more unitys of space marines. What's the lore on Germany having so many Votann players?
It's a mix between 1. Votann is underrated in America, because most American players believe their datasheets are bad, 2. The German Votann specialists are really skilled and perform well internationally and 3. The WTC terrain format is still popular in Europe and this terrain format with it's tight firing lanes supports Votann with their short-ranged, but brutal damage really well.
Thanks for this, I really enjoy your rankings and agree with you 99% of the time! Would you consider doing some list building videos as well, where you walk through how you build your lists/ what you include together? It is one thing knowing which units are good, but I often struggle figuring out how to actually assemble a coherent army.
That's a good idea, I'll think about doing that! The caveat however, is that lists require testing after you assemble them. Most of the time, there is something you change after two or three games.
Are these made in the same scale as normal miniatures? Couldn't really tell in the video.
Yes, these are Warhammer 40.000 miniatures!
