Hi Brooke, thank you for sharing your experiences. Is there anything you would recommend doing as preparation for placement?
Hello! In my opinion there is not much you need to prepare for leading up to your placement. Your placement will most likely ease you in with a very small case load, and some placements will even allow you to observe other clinicians. I think in the lead up of placement the preparation might be on managing your own anxiety and mental health. Starting anywhere is quite nerve wrecking! I really liked reminding myself that I can't expect myself to know how to do a role before I've been taught how to do it, so it's okay to be new and I'll learn as I go :) Which part of the psychology journey are you up to?
@@psychologywithbrooke good to know that! I'm finishing honours year in 2 weeks time and currently applying for master.
Are you a provisional psychologist now?
Yes! I am coming to the end of my provisional journey 😊
First, great to see you still uploading 😊Second, this is perfectly timed as I start placement in January! Hope you’re doing well
Thank you, definitely will continue to upload! That's so exciting!! How are you feeling?
@@psychologywithbrooke Quite excited, although m I have no adult settings unfortunately (Ed and Dev), but overall still optimistic about it all. Im interested in what modality you liked working with during your placements?
Oh cool!! So will the placements be more cognitive assessment focused? My placements have all been with adult client groups. I'm yet to work with children! For adults, it is hard for me to pick a preferred client group (if that is what you mean by modality) as I feel each age-range is lovely to work with
Watching this again because I have a clinical Master's interview next week!
Congrats!! Very exciting. Wishing you the best 🙌🏼
@@psychologywithbrooke thank you heaps :-) I am super nervous.
How did it go?
@psychologywithbrooke hey Brooke, thank you for asking. I think ok. It was just a group discussion on one ethical issue and 2 or 3 statements made by the interviewer followed by a quick one on one private chat with the interviewer. I don't find out until mid Nov to early Dec. I'm still waiting for other unis to interview me. Super nervous about it all. So much pressure.
Oh wow that's such an interesting format. Each one is definitely building your interview skills up! All the best for the rest of them 🤞🏼
Hi brooke. I watched your videos on the lead up to my interviews and they were so helpful. Instead of obsessing about the interview and acing it, I focused on getting in touch with the parts of me that I thought would make me a good psychologist. So instead of preparing answers and rehearsing, I decided that I would endure the intense stress, resist the urge to let my inner perfectionist run rampant, and just be myself. I was two hours early to my interview (purposely) and instead of "studying" or preparing, I sat in a nice spot and read a book that connected with those aspects of self that I mentioned. I didn't even think about the interview. Long story short, I received a first round offer to one of my dream schools for the master of clinical psychology and all I did was be myself, give my answers and think. So thank you for making these videos, your experience and wisdom rings true. One thing I found difficult though and I wonder if this connects with your experience, was not being able to celebrate your success with classmates in your honours because doing so would just remind them they didn't get an interview or an offer and bring up the stress of your future being undetermined.
CONGRATS!! Thank you so much for leaving this comment, reading it was so lovely and inspiring. I'd imagine a lot of energy went into resisting that urge and enduring the stress, so you should be beyond immensly proud of yourself! With those qualities you are going to do so well in Masters. That's an interesting thing to reflect on! My cohort had 100 students and a lot of it was conducted online, so it wasn't very intimate. I also had distanced myself from online cohort chat groups because they were quite competitive, and I didn't want to be apart of that. I did make a few friends with students from my thesis group. That didn't feel overly competitive and if someone got in or was applying somewhere we just shared it. Also out of curioisty (and only if you're comfortable sharing)- which book did you read?

Such good picks!!
Congratulations for getting in! And thank you for your tip, I have an interview this week for clinical and have spent the past number of days preparing as best I can. I might arrive a bit early and just listen to some music somewhere to chill and lessen my anxiety (I hope).
I have never heard of Raise, thank you for this. I currently volunteer providing telephone based crisis support for one organisation where I use counselling skills like active listening. I hope that is enough to get me into a Master's course. I would have liked to have face-to-face experience like mentoring should unis look for face-to-face experience. If I don't get accepted into Master's because I don't have face-to-face experience then I'll definitely try Raise and other mentor organisations. Did you need any previous experience to get into Raise?
You are welcome! Telephone crisis experience also sounds terrific! I have my fingers crossed for you. Making the decision though to get more experience and apply again is absolutely the right mindset to have. Hang in there! Raise should also be absolutely fine with a psychology qualification and your current experience :)
@@psychologywithbrooke thank you 😊
Congratulations on getting accepted into Clinical! Thank you so much for this video. I have applied for Master's (Clinical, MPP, Ed Dev) for next year and thought I'd start preparing for interviews now before I get any invitation to interviews. But then again, as you said, be yourself and not rehearsed. I am so anxious about it but your video helped me feel less anxious!
Congrats for getting up to this step! It's a huge milestone! Nerves are beyond understandable as they show you care. I think preparing and also trusting yourself is a great balance to have. Also thank you so much for the donation, that is beyond appreciated. I'm really glad my videos offered you valuable insight, and it's encouraging to keep going.
@@psychologywithbrooke thank you again 🙂
Thank you!!
You're welcome! All the best!
Hey Brooke, so sorry to hear about your last external placement not working out but glad that your supervisor was able to get you a new one so quickly! Just to share my own experience as a provisional psychologist (and some of the others in my clin psych cohort), many of us actually made the decision to defer our first external placement during our second year, which essentially means that we won't be graduating until mid 2026 instead of the end of 2025. Although it wasn't an easy decision to make, so many of us just wanted to actually enjoy our time in the program and feel like we were thriving, rather than just surviving. I also have been given an opportunity to do a really amazing adult placement, that would't have been available if I hadn't deferred. So yeah, I definitely resonated with this video as the clin psych program can be extremely testing at times. All the best for your final placement and hope to see you practicing soon :)
Thank you for sharing that! That's really awesome. And holding out for a higher quality placement definitely sounds worth it in the long run. Accepting that I won't be finishing up until next year has removed so much stress. Beforehand I was really trying to constantly work out how I could get it all done this year. Giving up control and accepting my fate has made quite the difference. And my placement schedule although it is slower, has provided me with a much more comfortable routine. This means I can comfortably complete my assignments, engage in uni, and do client work. Everything always works out as it should if we let it! All the best
Thankyou, I have an interview comming , bit nervous, this helps alot
Goodluck! Congrats to reaching this part of the long psych journey!
Hi Brooke, any chance you could do a video on personal statements for master's programs? Thank you for your videos btw, very helpful and comforting as a current honours student!
Awesome idea, thank you! I've put it on the list. I hope honours is treating you well! You are ALMOST at the finish line :D
Hey Brooke, I hope that the uni break is treating you well :) I was just wondering (if you feel comfortable sharing), what grades did you get to get into a Clinical Masters program? Thank you!
Hey! My WAM was 80% for the Bachelors and 86% for Honours. Just remember that the Masters applications are about a lot more than just grades, so don't be disheartened if you feel your grades aren't what you'd like them to be :)
Hi Brooke, I love your insight and the way you speak is so soothing! I'm sure you'll be an excellent clinician! Since I'm not an Australian but still very interested to study there, I wonder what's the situation like for international students in MCP? Anyways, I'm really grateful for your content. Best of luck for your degree!! :D
Thank you! To my knowledge there are less international spots in the MCP programs than domestic ones. I believe this is due to how competitive they are. There is an international student in my cohort and she seems to be enjoying it :)
Just wondering what kind of volunteer work you did?
Hey! I speak about my volunteering in this video: th-cam.com/video/rN2gh_FtlBw/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
@@psychologywithbrooke thanks I’ll check it out!
Is your thesis available/published online? Are you able to share any psych thesis examples?
My thesis isn't published. In my experience you can be provided with past thesis examples in honours and masters by your teachers in honours :)
Is your thesis published online or available somewhere to read?
Hi Brooke, thanks so much for sharing your experience! I’m currently in my third-year undergrad at RMIT and have been eyeing other unis for honours 😂 My end goal isn’t Masters but a research PhD so I’m aiming for an honours program that could set me up well for a research career. I have a small question about honours offers: I heard that the list of research projects/supervisors would only be sent to us after we accept the honours offer. Were you able to accept offers at a few schools at once, have a look at their list of projects/supervisors, and withdraw your acceptance if you weren’t keen with the options? From your video it sounds like this was the case. Thank you in advance!
Hello! Yes, that was the case for me :) I remember wondering the same thing and thinking that if I accepted a course the other universities would somehow know or it would cancel out any future offers haha. All the best!
Your videos are amazing, Brooke, and helping so many people! I'd love videos on applying for both honours and masters for all of us studying a bachelors - how many you can apply for, the process, etc! xx
Thanks for wonderful tips. Keep up the good work
Hey! I've been watching a few of your videos since I've got accepted into Masters. They have been really informative 😄 I was wondering if it's more manageable to hold a part time job in year 1? Just contemplating ways I can be somewhat financially stable before entering year 2 whereby it seems a lot more harder to maintain a side job. Thank you in advance and wishing you all the best!
Hey! So glad you've found the videos helpful! Going by people in my cohort it is manageable to work in year 1! People in year one worked 1-2 days a week. Everyone is different though with their personal stamina so you might have to just see how you go. Universities I'm assuming might differ a bit too with schedules and work load. There's no shame in you attempting to work and if it gets too much revisiting your hours. Massive congratulations on getting in and all the best to you too!!
@@psychologywithbrooke thank you for the advice!! I guess it's really about balancing which can get a bit tricky. I hope this year goes smoothly for you and all the best! 🤗
Who was your supervisor?
I only ask because I was wondering if I have the same supervisor as you!
Hey been subbed to you for a fair while now and been enjoying your insights along the way. I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I've just finished my Honours in NSW and was looking to apply into a Masters course. But they all seem to massively favour people who already have experience working in the field of mental health. Problem is, when trying to find any jobs/roles to get experience they all want people who already have a Masters/2+ years of experience. Just wondering if you found yourself in that same Catch-22 going from Honours to Masters, and if so how did you get around it? All I can think of is volunteering for a year just to "get it on the resume" so to speak. Would you had any suggestions, especially with respect to if there are any paid avenues to pursue because well... living is expensive these days haha. Also, did you do your provisional registration with APHRA after getting into your Masters, or is that something you can do after just the honours?
Hello! To answer the easy question first: you get your provisional registration with AHPRA when you start your masters course. If you do not get into a Masters course then you cannot apply for registration. (They used to have a 4+2 internship pathway, but I believe they got rid of that last year). Regarding experience: it is difficult. You should be able to get worker as a carer, which anything to do with NDIS is looked favourably upon and plus it is paid. Can you find intake work in a health/mental health setting? That's really good because you get to discuss sensitive topics with people who are affected, and practice your counselling skills. That's also paid! There seems to be a trend in the circle of people I know of working as a receptionist as a psychology clinic. That could be another option.
@@psychologywithbrooke Awesome, hadn't considered carer/intake work yet so I'll have to look in to those. And yes I've seen some listings for receptionists but they seem to get filled super quick haha. Good to know about the registration though, 1 less thing to worry about right now at least. Thanks for the help, much appreciated :) Good luck with your final year, just one last push to go.
Glad you're back 😊 Your final year sounds so hectic.. Are all clinical master's structured like that? I'm doing Ed & Dev and the way our program is structured is first year is only course work (with some mini placements, like delivering workshops, practising in class, using assessments etc), and second year is all placement (3 days a week) plus thesis. Couldn't imagine what you described while trying to have any kind of life outside of work. A metaphor that I like around doing master's and becoming a psych in general is that it's like the BUDS training navy seals have to do to become a navy seal, except instead of for the body and mind it's for the mind/soul/psyche etc. Couple that with all of the good things you are doing for yourself to live by your own advice (healthy eating, cutting out chemicals, social media etc), it's all just training you and helping you develop into to the most resilient, healthy person you can be. I'm looking forward to your "I've finished master's and am now a psychologist" video 😄All the best to you for this year!
Hello! Congrats on finishing honours and doing an Ed and Dev masters!!! I hope you have recovered already from the end of honours rush! The clinical programs all sound quite similar with everybody doing external placements, working on their thesis, and having classes. I should point out that classes wise the assignments are way lighter (at least where I am). The assignments also build on the clinic work you are doing. (Small presentation of a client, formulation, treatment plan etc). So they're nothing hectic. I mean I'm going okay so far with having my weekends to myself. And when classes start I will always keep a day a a week completely free for my hobbies, family time, and to get weekly chores done. Placement work also absolutely never comes home, and on those days I don't touch school work. If anything you just get quicker at getting school work done and save time by dropping the whole perfectionistic thing. We are really encouraged to just get the work done and not worry about grades, which is refreshing. I really like that metaphor!!! I'm also ridiculously excited for that video haha. So glad you've enjoyed the content!
Wow, I just subscribed and have been going through all your videos. And then, a new one came up. :)🎉❤
Hey Brooke, I hope you're doing well! I've been following your TH-cam channel and really appreciate the insights and experiences you share about studying psychology in Australia. I'm currently a 19-year-old female from India, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Honours. I'm considering pursuing a master's degree in psychology with a specialization in either clinical or professional from Australia. However, I've come across some concerns and uncertainties regarding the process. After conducting research, I've learned that I would need to complete an additional one-year diploma in psychology before pursuing my master's. Additionally, I've read that admission into master's programs in clinical psychology in Australia can be competitive for international students like myself, which has left me feeling a bit anxious about my decision. As I'm currently in my first year of studies, I'm reaching out to seek guidance on how I can improve my chances of being accepted into these programs. What steps can I take during my undergraduate studies to strengthen my application and stand out as an international student? Your insights would be incredibly valuable to me as I navigate this journey. Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide!
Hello! yes :) so in Australia you need to complete a 1 either a year Honours Degree of 1 year Graduate Diploma, before you can progress into the 2 year Masters Degree. Cohorts for these degrees can go upwards of 100! So there's definitely more spots. The professional masters degree has more spots (for example in 2022 there was a cohort of 100 at La Trobe University), and hopefully by the time you're up to it there's even more. They are really trying to make it that those who want to become psychologists have a proper opportunity to through the professional degrees, without it being ridiculously competitive. I'm not sure how many spots they allocate to international students, and this definitely will change per university and every year. I'd start reaching out to Australian universities and enquiring directly. Completely understandable how uncertain it feels for you, given it's competitive alone for local students. In terms of standing out- I'd try and get as much volunteer work early on as possible. Anything that allows you to demonstrate in your Masters application that you are capable of exercising psychologist-related skills and working with people. It could be worth joining university Facebook pages and asking if any other international students can reach out and provide insight :) All the best!!! I wish you the best of luck
@@psychologywithbrooke Thank you, Brooke, for your informative reply! I've been doing internships here in India and pursuing a diploma from IAOth. Additionally, I've been actively involved with an NGO. Despite these efforts, I'm concerned about the possibility of APS not accrediting my degree. What are my options in such a scenario? I'm eager to hear your advice on how to proceed. Thanks again for your assistance!
Did you do the interview before being rejected? Or were you rejected without having the opportunity to do an interview?:<
Hi! For this round of applications I got rejected for the clinical psych programs after doing interviews. I got offered a professional psych spot post interview. I reapplied though and am currently in my second year of clinical psych :)
Hey Brooke. I love your vids. They are the best psych vids on the net. Noticed you haven't posted for a long time. Just got accepted into Hons, and have watched all your stuff. Any more on the cards?
Thank you!! Such a lovely and motivating message to receive. Congratulations on your honours spot!! I am starting year 2 of clinical psych masters but am planning on making more videos. Is there anything in particular you would like to hear me speak on?
@@psychologywithbrooke Thanks Brooke. Absolutely! The referee process for Masters is a topic that baffles me - best practices, how to ask your supervisor/boss, how to know if it's been done, how different uni's differ in regards to platforms used and requirements. Good luck on your final year. I'm going to your old stomping grounds - RMIT - for hons (originally from Swin), so I hope it's worth it. I've subscribed to your vids, as I really enjoy them, and got lots out of them all. Look forward to the next one! Drew :)
Hi Brooke, thank you so much for this video! Such a great explanation of the thought processes that led you to choose La Trobe for honours. This has further solidified my decision to do the same if I get in. Currently, I'm in the 'waiting and waiting' portion of this process. I've just completed my bachelor at RMIT (same place as you!) where I have fortunately been accepted. I called Latrobe earlier this week (aprox 11th of December) and they said that most of the offers have still not been sent out yet. It's the 16th now and still haven't heard anything. Is there any chance you remember when you got your offer? My WAM is 79 btw but I'm guessing that yours was higher as you seem to be a badass! My other question: Would it be most responsible to act as though I will be doing my honours at RMIT and lock down my desired supervisor/project in case I don't get an offer from Latrobe? This may be silly but I have a great relationship with this RMIT professor and kind of hate the idea of organising a project with him and then saying 'actually I got another offer so cya!' Would really appreciate your advice here, thanks again for the great video :)
Hello! Sorry for the late reply. I got my honours offers from La Trobe and RMIT late January! Unfortunately cannot remember when I got the Swinburne and ACU ones. RMIT was super behind on sending offers out that year. How did you go with it all? I hope it worked out supervisor wise! Definitely not a silly question. The whole process is so confusing and even if offers are behind we still understandably feel like we need to be ahead of the game. A month ago I would have said to definitely reach out to that supervisor and discuss potential projects if you were to get in. There's also no shame in being honest that you're still waiting for a spot. You would hope they understand what a long and competitive process it all is. Even if you didn't do this, I'm sure something else worked itself out another way :) 79 is also terrific!!!! Well done.
Hey Brooke, thank you for the considered and encouraging response. I managed to scrape my way into La Trobe mid-February! Submitted my research proposal last week. Really enjoying it so far, thought I’d get the dregs of project choices (eg. forced to learn about dog behaviour, love dogs but please no) but I couldn’t be happier with my highly clinical topic and supervisor. Advance assessment and intervention with Kate is great too, I assume you had her for that too? Hope your masters is going well, I’m sure you’re crushing it!
Will you share which Clin Psych course you got into? (Only if you're comfortable of course!)
Thanks!! This was super helpful!!
How was the study load of the coursework subjects compared to 3rd year coursework subjects? Im trying to grasp the amount of workload in honours.
Hey! I found the coursework subjects easier to complete (the assignments felt lighter) and the thesis was easy to fit in. The only issue is that every university is going to be a little bit different and people work at different paces. The workload is doable though and I didn't feel it was anywhere near as bad as people had drummed up it would be.
IM SO GLAD I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL!! thank you for the effort and time you put into the videos ❤
This is amazing and so helpful, thank you so much!!!
Thanks for the videos! congratulations on acceptance into the clinical program. Which university are you in if you don't mind sharing?

This reduces my anxiety about getting into honours and doing my own thesis! Thank you so much. Your video is so helpful!!
Amazing!!! So glad to hear this, thank you!! If you have any questions about anything to do with the process please let me know :)
Hello, what university are you studying your masters at ? Thank you!
Thanks so much for the all the helpful tips and advice from your experience! I find your channel really useful.
Thank you!! I do plan on making more videos, life just gotten hectic! If you ever have questions or want to know more about the psych pathway please leave a suggestion :)

Hi I'm so glad that I came across your channel. ♥ I'm a current Graduate Diploma of Psych student and am debating whether I should go for MPP or honours and then endorsement. Would love to know what is your experience and the differences between the MPP vs Clinical Psych programs. And do you have time for a part-time or full-time job while doing your master's? Thank you for the great content! 🥰
Hello! I'm glad you found it too!! I'm catching up on comments after a rather chaotic time. How did you go and what did you end up choosing?
Hey. Great vid! Subscribed. Really enjoyed your info, as I'm applying to Latrobe hons for next year. Do you mind sharing what the cutoff was to get in?
Hi, thank you! I'm not sure what the cut off was but I knew some students who got in with high 60s. The cut off changes every year so it is hard to judge. Just do your absolute best and apply everywhere! All the best :)

@@grewal_9121 Hey. Applications only came on board about 5 days ago. Psychology Hons will be in the dropdown list now. Good luck, I might see you there! :)
Oh wow, I've gone from your amazing "didn't get into clinical" video from last year to this one - well done! I realised as honours kicked off this year that I wanted to spend next year away from the books and work as a provisional psych for a bit; I've worked my ass off for 3.5 years and it just doesn't make sense to jump into post-grad and risk the burnout. I think you made an excellent decision, and obviously your dream uni agreed! Bravo :)
Ahhhh this is so accurate. I'm halfway through honours and it has been absolute chaos amongst the cohort for weeks. Everyone's been tearing their hair out (and each others) by comparing grades, challenging grades, etc.; apparently one even sent a death threat to a lecturer over their mark for a relatively insignificant assessment because it "ruined their chances of clinical masters" - it's a bloodbath out here. Thankfully, I have about 10-15 very full years on the others, so I'm able to see the bigger picture, but unfortunately for a lot of these kids who've come straight out of high school into university, they actually believe their life will be over if they aren't accepted. You raise too many great points to address them all, but I think the best one is the competitive narrative. I think if you completely removed this "clinical psych" hangup, the vast majority of students would happily accept, and be proud of, receiving a "professional psych" offer. The idea that it's a masters for the leftovers who will forever be condemned to ridicule by those with clinical qualifications as they sit upon their ivory thrones is absurd, but that's the narrative, right? This is totally insane given that most students (including myself) got into psych with the broader goal of providing psychotherapy in a one-on-one helping role. This is EXACTLY what the professional masters is, and the fact that nobody can tell you what the difference is beyond a medicare rebate is just further evidence of this narrative. I see this is around a year old... How is/was your experience in the professional masters program?
Hi Brooke I am also doing MCP, I had the EXACT same revelation as you, I am almost a quarter done w my masters! 😲. Interesting you start thesis first year, for mine its second year and yes to the lit review video.. regardless of grade!
Thanks for the video Brooke! I was just wondering if there were any international students in your cohort, and if so, how many? xx
There are a few but to my knowledge the number of international students varies every year :) All the best with applications!
Thanks for sharing Brooke, these videos are SUPER helpful! It's nice to hear someone who has recently completed honours explain what impression they have of clinical masters thus far. I'm third year, getting ready to apply for honours in August, and I am a little nervous about how intense fourth year will be. It's nice to hear someone else put into perspective a short-term 1-year grind during honours, as that's sort of how I picture it. Good luck with the remainder of your first year!
One year later- hello! Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. It's been quite hectic and I'm coming to the end of second year. I really hope your third year went well. What did you end up doing psych-wise afterwards?
@@psychologywithbrooke You are most welcome! I can only imagine how hectic it has been... i've been to a few masters sessions this year and can see how full on psych masters courses, particularly clinical, can be. Thank you, my third year went well! I ended up commencing honours part-time, so i'm currently on the last 6 week stretch of the coursework and will tackle my thesis next year. Best of luck with finishing off your second year and associated placement!
Great video. As a current 4th year psych student, I enjoyed hearing about your Masters experience to date. Thanks for the content! 😊
Thank you!! Good luck with fourth year and your journey beyond!
I really appreciate you for making this video! ❤ As far as Im aware, these placements are unpaid. Pls correct ne if In wrong. The uni websites also recommend not working for more than 8 hrs. How do you manage your paid work (if at all) with placements, study, assignments, self time.
Hey! Correct, placements are unpaid unfortunately. I am not currently working but so far in semester 1 you could probably get away with working one day a week. I do have classmates who are working but I'm unsure how many hours they're doing. If they are doing more than 1-2 days a week though then I have no idea how they're juggling it all. This can also depend on the type of person you are. Some people definitely have more energy than others and can tackle assignments super quickly. Others may look at working as their 'break' from uni, and count it as self-care time. I actually quit my job halfway through January, but realistically I could have kept working probably up until March, just because things didn't actually get hectic with university until April. I don't think there's any harm in trying to work when you start and then just making adjustments depending how it goes (if you're lucky enough to have a flexible job). Thanks for the feedback, so glad it was helpful!
@@psychologywithbrooke Thanks Brooke! Hope to figure it out when I get there....
@@aashichhatiawala6968 Hey Aashi, working part time and doing full time masters is quite tough. I know the people who work in my course are either working less or dropping to part time at uni. Seems like the most they can work is 1 day during the week (excluding weekends)
@@roronoazoe Oh wow! Thanks for sharing!
Great video Brooke! Im just about halfway through my honours year so I am glad that things become more balanced when going into Masters as right now it feels like hell 😅 Good luck with your placement and thesis x
Thank you! Things must be getting hectic at the moment in honours. Hang in there it will all be over soon!!! All the best!
