Adventures in the natural playgrounds of New Zealand.
Mingha - Edwards Loop Adventure
When the weather is good in Arthurs Pass National Park, this loop is awesome! A variety of environments to please everyone, from native bush trail, river bed, tussock trail, rock scrambles, boulder jumbles and snow slides. The mountain tarns and views in all directions were my favourites.

If you are holidaying in Hanmer Springs and the weather is good, hop over the back and explore some of this high country with a nice loop run. www.wildthings.club/trails/canterbury/hanmer-springs/a-tale-of-two-peters/
Jordan Saddle Loop
มุมมอง 4602 หลายเดือนก่อน
A big day out on the feet. Some of it an awesome trail run through New Zealand bush and along mountain ridges, some of it hiking and scrambling over and around rocks. Up the Bealey Spur, along Hut Spur, down to Jordan Saddle and out to the Waimakariri via Jordan Stream. Then a shuffle run along the river trail to the highway and a short road section back to the start to complete this classic loop.
Maukatere / Mt Grey Loop Run
มุมมอง 663 หลายเดือนก่อน
Another trail run adventure on Maukatere (Floating Mountain). This time past the high point trig and back down the Mt Grey track to the Okuku Road. Such a great downhill section with native bush, switchbacks and a little stream lower down. This trail is one from the WildThings directory - www.wildthings.club/trails/canterbury/amberley/mt-grey/

Stour River MTB
มุมมอง 654 หลายเดือนก่อน
A mid winter exploration ride along the Stour River track to Manuka Hut in the Hakatere Conservation Area. In summer weather this trail is ranked as a green level MTB track. Recent snow and muddy conditions made it pretty slow going with the river crossings a bit more of a challenge.

Some of the basic tips for when the trail gets more gnarly. YES! Sometimes you have to walk before you run.
Winter Crow. A Winter Overnighter in Arthurs Pass National Park. D&D #16
มุมมอง 3826 หลายเดือนก่อน
WARNING - scenes showing the butchery of a deer are contained in this film. In this adventure, Daughter and Dad sneak off work early and shuffle into the Crow Hut, tucked up the Crow River Valley. Keeping moving, as well as wearing plenty of clothing then getting busy gathering enough fire wood, helped create a cozy hut. Lake Emily to Lake Heron Loop Run
มุมมอง 1867 หลายเดือนก่อน
A great loop through some wide open high country, with a look at two classic huts; Manuka Hut and Double Hut. I even managed to locate the 1951 signature left by Sir Ed Hillary.
Kaituna Loop. Banks Peninsula Trail Run Loop.
มุมมอง 598 หลายเดือนก่อน
If you fancy a half marathon with some vert, this is the loop for you. Close to Christchurch City and well spaced water supply at Packhorse Hut and Mt Herbet Shelter, this loop takes you through a wide range of Port Hills flora and fauna and on a clear day chucks in some epic views of Lyttelton Harbour and the full crater rim. This is one of the Wild Thing routes: www.wildthings.club/trails/can...
Coopers Creek & Ryde Falls. Trail Run
มุมมอง 739 หลายเดือนก่อน
Daughter and Dad #15. The tip from this adventure is to make sure you get some extra clothing on when you stop for a break. The body can quickly chill, particularly when you have been running in cool conditions. A bonus tip from me, is to sample the Horopito leaf in very small amounts! This loop from Coopers Creek to Ryde Falls is well worth the visit with lovely bush trails, mellow ups and dow...
Poulter Overnighter
มุมมอง 1.7K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
A return trip to this alpine valley. Summer conditions for the first day of autumn. Very low rivers and dry grass. An overnighter at the lovely Poulter Hut with a before dinner trot up to Lake Minchin. Lots of native birdlife around. Thanks to the pest control work in the upper Poulter. If you enjoy back country mountain bike adventures and trail running, this is the combo for you.
Lindis Pass - Double Peak. A mini trail run.

This area is stunning for the textures and way light plays over the tussocks. Well worth pulling the car over and enjoying the views.
Hawdon Valley and Walker Pass Overnighter. D&D #14
มุมมอง 37411 หลายเดือนก่อน
D&D tip #14 - trail running also includes plenty of walking, climbing and sitting around eating and drinking cups of tea in beautiful places. On this overnighter we slowed down enough to get close to several rare New Zealand birds and soak up the amazing scenery of the NZ mountains in the height of summer.

@@cctrailrunningnz You're welcome my friend 🙂
Nice work! Thanks for sharing, I have looked into this route and was put off by the Jordan Stream section. Good on you for braving through that one!
Thanks for the feedback @marcelorofer. In good weather the entry into the Jordan is ok. I'm pretty sure I may have dropped in a little too central and needed the snow grass to climb down some steeper sections. There were foot trods and if you're not bothered about keeping the feet dry, it's ok. I'm glad you enjoyed the film, have a nosey at some of my other adventure loop runs. Cheers Christian.
Cheers, Christian. Would you have a GPX or topo map for your route? I'm curious about the Little Jordan Spur descent as well
@@marcelorofer Don't go down Little Jordan, there's an impassable waterfall and it'll be a nightmare downclimb on loose shit. This is quite a good route description: haere.net/Bealey-Spur-and-Jordan-Stream-circuit-route

@@cctrailrunningnz Yw, keep it up
Great and helpful. I'm really keen to do this but quite a lot older, but looks doable, although I might fast walk your running bits!
I'm glad you enjoyed this wee film. Don't worry about age, it's a route that rewards determination! Probably best ridden in summer/autumn, as the conditions are nicer on the body, and you can carry less gear. If going all the way to the nice Poulter Hut, be aware that the Poulter River crossing just before the hut can be risky after a few days of rain or snow melt. The Casey 2 is a great hut and a good fall back spot if needed. Trust-Poulter Hut in between, is an older hut and colder with an open fire and less insulation. It's only a couple of km's up the river bed from where I stashed my bike to the Poulter Hut and about 4km through nice bush, to Lake Minchin, well worth the trip if you're a fisherman or to hear/see the Whio or even Kiwi. Karerera often nest near the Poulter too. And then there's the Kakariki! Whole valley is well worth the effort!
@@cctrailrunningnz thanks heaps for this advice. I'll also take dimp!!
@@kenhughey4996 Definately! the black flies/sandflies are hungry up there.
S tier valley for sure, Good to see one less deer in there. I always seem to run into them up Crow.
Was a bit of luck for us to meet up with a kind hunter who had run out of space in his pack!
He did a good job you too
Where to go sissy
D certainly did well with the blade eh Nat!
Very cool, in both senses of the word.
A good hut, and after a little labour a warm fire and hot beef chilli took care of the cold.
Wouldn't be more adventurous if you hike?🤔 Unless you're gonna cheat and bike!🙃
It's one of the few backcountry routes in a National Park open to MTB's up to where I left my bike. The trail is pretty dull on your feet, but fast and fun on the bike. I tend to hike what I can't run or ride.
Stunning!
Thank you! Cheers!

Glad you liked the vid. I hope to make some more this autumn.
@@cctrailrunningnz Yes, I pray that you go far. But optimizing your videos properly is very important. Otherwise, you won't get very far.
Cool to see those Parakeets, A true NZ bird watching adventure.
It was a real surprise to see quite a few Kākāriki in the Hawdon. Quite a few other native birds around as well: Kea, Kaka, Mōhua and Karearea, but too hard to film. All thanks to the pest controllers who we met, and the Kea monitors who we passed up near the tarn. Bird watching is cooler than I expected, might have to get a notebook and pencil :)
Spent a few nights in that hut, it’s tied down for a reason!
It was calm when I stayed, but there was evidence of a recent storm with plenty of windfall around.
Love the snow you went though nice job running .
Thanks Nat. Was quite a bit of hiking and snow shuffling, so we didn't slide over or crash through the crust.
Awesome! Did you sleep with no pad? And just in clothing?
Glad you enjoyed the vid. The hut I stayed in had mats supplied for each bunk, so no need to carry anything to sleep on. It was also a very warm day and the hut held it's heat well into the night, so I used a very small down sleeping bag and no liner. Yep, slept in the clothing, and that pre dawn chill was taken care of with the thermals I had carried. Weather in NZ changes fast, so even on the best forecast, I've got warm up gear. Hope you subscribe. It encourages me to get out on the next adventure. Cheers Chris.

2.30 hours from car park to summit?? Thank you for sharing
@hikingzone I've done this climb a couple of times now. Both trips in the snow at the top section and around about 2 hours each time. This is the Strava segment. www.strava.com/segments/8861388 Glad you enjoyed the film.
@@cctrailrunningnz I did the other day 12 hours Walk
Was the section through the bush pretty bad? Do you think it would be any better in summer? Cheers for the vid, nice work!
Hi Jesse, I'm thinking the bush keeps pretty damp, even in summer. It was about 40% rideable, mainly due to windfall, and technical parts that were easier to push up than ride. With summer comes more daylight hours, so that would change things in providing a longer day to get the bush section done. All the grassy parts would be drier and less need to do the long detour up to the Hurunui swing bridge. With a low river, I'd cut directly across Holmes Bay. If I was going back, I'd run the bush, as that's my happy place. I'm curious to know what the section from Windy Point into the Hope track is like for an MTB though. I'm glad you enjoyed the vid, hope you are a subscriber now. Cheers Chris.
@@cctrailrunningnz I ended up trying this a few weeks ago. We started from Loch Katrine as had a 4wd. We ended up crossing the Hurunui by Holmes bay with the bikes. Even with the spring melt the deepest section we crossed was halfway up the thighs so really not bad and saved a lot of biking up to the swingbridge. The bush section on the way in wasn't very, fun. Id say we rode 5% of it. The last few km in the bush was quite ridable down from the saddle though. The flats to Hope kiwi lodge were good but a bit tiring with the squashy grass. The way back was significantly easier and shorter. We may have rode 30% of the bush section on the way back. I pulled a lot of windfall off the track so hopefully is slightly easier for the next person haha. I saw this report of people coming in from the other way cris.lovell-smith.com/trips/2011/12/mission-into-hope-kiwi-lodge/ sounds as though it is potentially worse though.
Great to read about your experience Jesse. Glad you could avoid that Hurunui swing bridge. The access ramp off that is tricky in cycle shoes! I agree, unless you have a high tolerance for hike a bike, those bush sections, windfall, mud bogs and narrow channels, it's not much fun lugging a bike and your gear through. I have also been researching access from the Windy Point end to Hope Kiwi Lodge. I reached out to Deane Parker who passed through on one of his adventures. bikepacking.com/plog/doubtful-hope-new-zealand-film/ He said it was 50% hike a bike (for me I'm thinking probably a lot more hike and struggle) I also thought of the other route up the Hope using the farm track, but doubt access is possible from the land owner. I'll ask to check what I've heard. There is a horse route up the river to Hope Kiwi lodge that maybe an option. www.hshr.org.nz/trek-the-high-country__trashed/historic-hope-kiwi-pack-track/ From there to St Jacobs and Top Hope, it's river flats and grass banks.
