Meet Tad | Aged Care Services | The Benevolent Society
Meet aged care client Tad. Working class man Tad (67) lost his job in Australia and sought a life in Thailand striving to make a difference in the communities there. It wasn’t until he found himself back in Australia with just the clothes on his back that he realised that he needed help.
The Benevolent Society’s Care Connector Sherral was Tad’s saving grace. She helped him commence the initial arrangements to ensure he had his basic needs met such as housing, furniture, and clothing.

I'm so sorry that there are those of us who grew up not being told. I think that's one of the worst things you can do to a child. I was told I was adopted early on, so I grew up always knowing. It still wasn't easy being adopted and feeling like I never fit in anywhere, but at least I knew WHY. There are already enough secrets and lies in adoption, this just adds another layer of trauma and confusion when the truth finally comes out. I hope that all LDA adoptees are able to uncover the truth about who they are, and that they are able to endure the pain this brings for them... that they are supported and loved through the process and able to make peace with their reality.

No you don't start to age at 40. You age since you are born. The toxic mindset that is part of ageism is to define fixed ages where things happen. It's a selffulfilling prophecy that affects people negatively.

i can't find anything that talks about the subtle ageism where people of some undefined age are patronisingly labelled "the elderly" or "older" and just how much the prejudice that often hides presumably informs how "younger" people regard people older than themselves. Its not all about systemic care issues and where the drivers push it is it? Its the "younger" people that need to be asked to notice their language and prejudices that seems to be driving it - but this video is nearly all focusing on the "older" people!

Hi all, Thank you for sharing your own individual experiences. I feel like i can somewhat relate to your stories. Im 29 now and i was adopted when i was 2. I told that i was adopted at 21. It has been such a surreal journey. At first I went through similar feelings as having the sense of no belonging. Not knowing who i am even to the point of being disgusted when looking in to the mirror. Whilst going through the shock of it all I was appreciative of my loving adoptive mother as she had given me everything and all i could ever ask for. Showed me so much love i didnt even have the need of longing for a farther. (adoptive father passed away not long after the adoption) ... Im glad that i was told at a later stage in life as i was in a place where i could kind of handle being told being told about it all. To be honest i still am processing it now almost 9 years on. Having a mind set of believing in the universe, and all is meant to be has helped me coming to terms with it all. Ultimately accepting what has happened my life. My biological mother was not able to look after me as she was very young and had no support from her family (as it was seen as a taboo to have a child before being married along with having a baby with a person from another religion) and as for the biological farther he wanted the pregnancy terminated... I am in the process of trying to contact my biological mother, not in the hope of pursuing a relationship with her but just for closure in this chapter of my life i guess. I hope you all find peace within yourselves as it can be a long and difficult journey regardless of age. 🙏

Thank you to ALL the adoptee's and mothers for speaking of their experiences as survivors of forced adoption. It's vital that we acknowledge that The Benevolent Society, Australia's oldest charity was a significant pervayor of forced adoptions. This clip, does not acknowledge this fact. For many survivors of forced adoption it is extremelly difficult to return to the same NGO that was the cause of their seperation from kin. TBS has signed up to redress programs for other survivors of human right violations, now it is time for them to step up and instigate redress for adoptees and their mothers. They don't need state parliament to direct them to do so.

  • @sharynwhite2640

What about the lack of human and civil rights of adoptees? How are we *still* severing relationship rights, sealing original birth certificates, abandoning children to adoption with no requirement for welfare checks or to tell them they are adopted, with those children losing their right to see their own true birth certificate and having to wait throughout most of adolescence to find out their history at 18 years old - if then -and in many states of Australia sometimes forever? How about raising the issues of what experiences of adoption entail for adopted people including adoption restraining orders (contact vetoes), and adoption gag orders ? (most of these people are committing an offence under the NSW Adoption Act Section 180 - $2750 fine or 12 months imprisonment or both). Who is doing anything about these laws? And the lack of follow through from the govt agreed upon recommendations to come out of the Senate Inquiry? And the conflict of interest inherent in organisations funded to support adopters - that include the voices of adopters in this video as if there is no power differential? Yes, there is incredible trauma for adopted people in adoption - cumulative trauma, with complex post traumatic stressors throughout life and the adopted people interviewed on here showed that. But much of this trauma is from the human rights violations we are subject to, and the lack of targeted services to assist adoptees. Isn't there an obligation for the places that are funded to support adoptees to make statements about these issues as well as highlighting the trauma arising from them?

I can only speak for the countries that I have watched on U Tube i.e., the UK, USA and Australia. All bedevilled with the same problems, pension poverty and child poverty. Yet, in every case the rich grow richer. Therefore, there must be a change of emphasis. For people to have multi-millions and billions in wealth is obscene. The higher rate tax system must be increased radically, plus a more awareness of tax dodging with colossal fines. It may alter things a little, maybe. The biggest obstacle is the greed of man The rich and powerful can buy the support of governments which of course means that any action taken against them will be mild in nature.

I placed my original comment "The age pension is NOT a WELFARE payment...." six months ago in the hope people would realise what this government intends to do with our money we made in tax to provide ourselves with a pension. The first thing they did was to start calling it WELFARE and they got away with it, Now they are talking about an age pension welfare card where you can only shop at certain places and purchase certain items. Pop down to the pub with your mates for a beer with that and see how it goes. The age pension is not and never was a welfare payment.

    • @aussiemusicfan0298

Age pension is welfare. Just because you work hard all your life doesn’t mean you should be entitled to age pension. It should be only going to those in most in need. Way too many well off Australians are receiving the age pension.

A couple of days ago there was a piece in the London Evening Standard that claimed half of children in the UK were living in poverty. It went on to explain that a single parent with two children had to `manage' on £280/week after housing costs. Which presumably meant after tax also, as that is deducted at source. In other words, they had nearly 3 hundred quid a week to splurge on food and whatever. As a singleton, I can manage on £20/week for food & subsistence. It's all I need. Even with kids it can't be more than double that. So where does the spare £240/week go to? Pocket money, obviously. Mobile phones, computers and games, probably. What then - does childhood poverty now mean having no X-Box...? The state pension is little more than half the figure quoted. Maybe pensioners are judged by a different standard of poverty...
