Jesse David Fox, Author of "Comedy Book: How Comedy Conquered Culture" - Bullseye with Jesse Thorn
Jesse David Fox is a senior editor at Vulture and the site's main comedy critic. He’s also the author of Comedy Book. It’s a book about the history and evolution of comedy through covers and interviews of greats like Jerry Seinfeld, Ali Wong, and Adam Sandler, to just name a few.
Comedy Book isn't just a history of the form. In the book Fox writes about comedy as an evolving artform. He gets into the role it plays in our culture, and how the form itself has changed, and is still changing.
Jesse David Fox joins us to talk about Comedy Book and dives into the evolution of the form. He also gets into comedy’s relationship with social media, and how it’s brought about a growing emphasis on crowd work in stand up.

Mr Park has a really keen eye for the minute details of expression. Also note his immaculate articulation (for instance of "actually" @0:55). Perhaps it's inspired by voicing his characters? Anyway he would sure make for a tremendous audiobook reader.
Paul was an incredible writer. God bless him ❤
Thank you, Nick Park! You are a creative genius!!!
Well, Humpty Dumpty is cute with or without his hair, so…😂
It's called "The Phil Collins" I believe 😂. Works very well for him
Love this song. Watched Kermit sing it back in the day. Then Kenny Loggins on his Return to Pooh Corner. Thank you Paul!
Oh, I am so excited for this!!!
❤❤
Jesse and Ken looking like a million bucks.
Id still ride that face...balding or not...love me some Jude Law
..and wherever it would stop he'd yell.."Tadpoles is a winner.." We all thought he was crazy, but then again, we had some growing up to do. As one who is guilty of Jack impersonations in various comments sections here on TH-cam, or elsewhere, long live Jack Handey.
Why is this channel so unpopular? From the looks of the content it should have a lot more views 🤔
What a lovely interview. Just a delight!
great job Jesse. the topic of hairlines should come up more often in your interviews
This is great!
Lots of respect for Paul, but the "universe" doesn't give anything - God does. The universe is a creation, not the Creator.
Just an expression brother. Not that serious.
@sheepreviews2046 agree to disagree. Assuming anything usurps the authority of God is serious.
@@robbernath That’s good then considering it’s just an expression.
God doesn't exist though
@@666xMajor in your opinion, which you're entitled to have. Pray that one day soon you'll see things differently.
❤❤❤❤❤
For me currently, Dispatches from Elsewhere is the best show I’ve ever seen ❤
I agree with John. Despite the disturbing scenes (which most I skipped) there’s something incredibly beautiful and artistic about this film
Dear Dilla, You Are Something Else❤️
I'd like to see John Waters make something radically different. Oftentimes directors become parodies of themselves and tend to make a variation of the same film over and over. They find a certain comfort zone and don't want to alienate their fanbase. Too bad he never had the opportunity to make The Confederacy of Dunces. He expressed an interest to make a film of the novel but it never happened for one reason or another. I've never read the book but seeing him take on material that he didn't create would have been interesting.
SO enjoyed this interview and Want More to hear about Prancer!!
Jhud ❤❤
Yea we need a Guilty, Phat Kat & Pete Rock album
I hope the album gets sampled!
Great interview. People need to get over the fact that he doesn’t want to make a rap album. Nobody’s entitled to that. If you’re intelligent enough to enjoy an André verse, you should be intelligent enough to understand that how another man chooses to express himself artistically is totally up to that man and not your desires.
P.S. Loved this interview.
“I Love L.A.” better be the theme song for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles! I love Randy Newman.
Jesse Thorn is a fantastic interviewer.
Huge fan. Cool interview yall.
Sang and wrote songs for Bugatti Malone movie And Kermit’s rainbow song
Sometimes I get super jealous of you, Jesse. This is one of those times.
Great interview,very talented!!😊
So tight, us listeners are beaming with pride for tha J-Bird.
COOL I REMEMBER THIS SO COOL
The most amazing song by the brilliant @therealpaulwilliams this song ❤️
Absolutely brilliant
Paul is legend. A grounded, funny, creative, generous genius. I came of age in the late 70’s/early 80’s when Paul was an artistic force visible across dimensions. And I’m still discovering his work! A few months ago, I watched “Phantom of the Paradise” for the first time and couldn’t believe I missed it all these years. I vividly remember standing in the bitter cold and seeing Paul in the 1982 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I swore he waved right to me🤩 A fellow ACOA, his story of singing on cue in the middle of his father’s drunken nights resonated completely - our Dads could have compared notes. So happy Paul has his sobriety. He looks and sounds wonderful❤️
Loved this, it shows all the angles of why Paul easily became my favorite musical artist, his sweet demeanor, his openness on his mistakes and humbleness about his triumphs, the quality of his work, it's all been a gift to US the world who feels more joy because of him. I wish I could tell all that to him in person but I know he knows how many countless of us are out here who know deeper levels of joyfulness because of what he's given us.
He's the coolest, man.
❤❤❤
I agree with him, it was a good time in Cali, he doesn't have to explain, it is what it IS 😂
"Volunteers of America" by The Both (Aimee Mann and Ted Leo) is this dialed up to 11: a suicidally depressed first responder feeling abandoned by his society, seeking solace in his Catholicism but failing to find it, in a catchy, upbeat pop song.
Hoping to see some of these characters back on Comedy Bang Bang one day. Now that they pay guests.
I could watch hours of Adomian doing impressions
People from the west coast gets it.💯
