Doesn't the question answer itself? You're doing very well professionally. You're much better off than if you had become an artist. I know, "I am an artist." Yeah me too but I'm not a professor.

@@daronfayas8145 I found it very lonely working alone over the 20 years of supporting myself as an artist before I went into teaching. The prof thing was more the desire to be in a community and I'm assuming that you know how enjoyable it can be being in a culture of making. I still have to work alone, but really, teaching as a financial decision was of little concern to me and might have cost me money in the end- I really don't know. At least I can bring real-world experience to students.

@@JohnAmoss I love your response. I illustrated for 9 years. I loved the solitude. Time went by very slowly, strangely enough and I loved every minute of it. The huge amount of labor and unsteady work resulted in a very low income however. I saw people with pretty average talent making a normal living doing other things while I struggled. So I became a K-12 teacher. Teaching college is REALLY competitive as I was told early on, it is not any easier to making a living at that as it is as an artist. K-12 art education isn't really a walk in the park either despite the statistics. After all is said and done, I believe an artist needs to be supported by a community and that includes financial support. We don't go on making our work for ourselves forever although that is commonly believed to be the main creative motivation of an artist. I don't believe that is true. One of the greatest teachers I had called it "creative masturbation" and I believe that term describes the motivation of a learning artist very well. Ultimately the work is lacking purpose and is not very satisfying. You need to share with a supportive audience when you're a mature artist otherwise, there's not much point in doing it.

...and yeah, it IS wonderful to be a part of a group that is learning. I believe that also qualifies as a an audience of some sort. Matter of fact, my best work was when I was a student and that was over 30 years ago. Maybe I'm a little kinder and gentler Jimmy now! 😆
