New Zwift Ride & Rockr Pro Pain Cave (w/Apple Watch Heart Rate)
I’m brand new to indoor cycling (only 9 months outdoor), so this is my first-ever “pain cave”, which is comprised primarily of a Zwift Ride Smart Frame, Wahoo Kickr Core trainer, Rockr Pro rocker plate, Vizio 43” 4K TV and AppleTV 4K (3rd Gen), all snugly fitted into a 72” x 36” space.

We got the REP AB-4100 adjustable bench because my wife prefers doing incline dumbbell work vs Tonal. I was skeptical because it’s much heavier (85 lbs.) than the easily-moved Tonal bench, but its wheels and vertical storage/stand-up ability have completely won me over. Plus, the variety of pec, shoulder, bicep movements it allows is fantastic. Finally, it looks great!

I have the 10000E (not hybrid), an I’m a contractor/welder and it’s a beast. So glad I bought it. It also poses my home during outages.

@@cefrayer Ahh very cool. Small TH-cam world lol. How are you liking the bike set up so far. So much info out there it's hard to know if your'e making the right choice lol. Peloton is so intriguing but I do love the Zwift setup and platform as well.
@@731Woodworks I’m a workout nerd (Tonal, treadmill, cycling), but I’m new to Zwift and have no Peloton experience, so take any input from me with the proverbial grain of salt it deserves. With that said, what I absolutely love so far about my setup is that the rocker plate really makes riding inside feel exactly like riding a real bike outdoors. My *assumption* is that Peloton doesn’t have that option(???). Also, if you have any concern about whether that front leg on the Zwift Ride is steady, I assure you it is-extremely so! If I were in the same boat as you, my primary concern would be the durability of the Zwift Ride, given that it was just released in June. Pelaton, on the other hand, has been around a long time and has an excellent reputation. However, I recall reading recently that they are struggling financially, so there could be risk on that front. I have a preference for following the Wayne Gretzky philosophy: skate to where the puck is going (not where it is). Accordingly, my best current assessment is that Peloton is the past-present, while Zwift is the present-future. Personally, I’m not into high-energy (overly-emotive) personal/class trainers, so Peloton is an easy no for me. On Zwift, I can ride (and/or run) alone at any pace I’m ready for, or in leisurely group rides with people all over the world, do training challenges, workouts, and even race (I’m not ready for that yet). And as a techie (AS, BS, MS in IT) and retired technology attorney, I can see near-endless growth & improvements coming in the future for Zwift’s virtual world(s), which seems highly unlikely for Peloton given its business model. On a completely different note (although I’m hesitant to even mention this), I enjoy your videos despite the fact that (here it comes) I’m an extremely progressive atheist (borderline anti-theist). Sometimes I even chuckle at your religious shirts, but in no way does it hinder the enjoyment and education I receive from the content you create. But, unlike many atheists who feel the-in my view, unnecessary-need to distance themselves from all things religious, I enjoy your videos in much the same way as I still enjoy listening to and singing Christmas songs. Indeed, the entire Christmas season is a completely delightful experience for me every year, despite the fact that I know it’s based entirely on myths (no offense intended). What matters to me are facts, logic, science, and the reality of our existence that they reflect and improve. And one part of our reality is the world-class content you create and share, as well as your utterly-watchable presentation style. In a word, FANtastic! Although you are nothing alike, if I were ranking every TH-cam creator by presentation style and watchability, you would be second only to the incomparable Doug DeMuro. Anyway, although a risky topic to raise, I thought you might be interested in knowing that your viewing audience includes at least one hardcore “unbeliever”.
Just received my Zwift Ride Wahoo complete with the Zwift floor mat - everything is rock solid and sweat is caught by the mat! Your “Rockr Pro Pain Cave” platform seems be an unnecessary complication & my guess is that you will get rid of it “very soon”. Best of luck mate
I did a test ride before the rocker arrived and I found the frame to be too stiff for my liking (compared to the natural sway of riding a real bike outdoors). Since I installed the rocker, I’ve completed the first two routes on Zwift and I’m already thrilled with the rocker. It’s so much more natural and comfortable that I already can’t imagine Zwifting without it. Highly recommended!
I have Gymrail momentum and don't want to ride without anymore. Feels like riding outside and helps to make longer trainings
@@kuhadekuvertsuttaaThanks! I had not heard of the Gymrail, but I just went to their website and watched a video. It’s interesting (and expensive compared to my Rockr Pro), but it does not seem to be compatible with the Zwift Ride.
Is the Zwift ride easy to disassemble / assemble? I don't have the space to have it permanently set up. Cheers and thanks!
Generally, I think Yes is the best answer, but it depends on what level of disassembly you need. To detach the frame from the trainer is one bolt (~30 seconds), then another 30 to loosen the seat post bolt and remove it, and lastly another 60 to remove the handlebars. Zwift has an edited assembly video that will give you a good idea of what to expect, but it was a bit more difficult than they make it look.
@@cefrayer Sounds like a 30 second set up and 30 seconds to disassemble. I'd only need to detach the frame from the trainer. I have the space to store the trainer and frame, just no space to have it just assembled in the office. Thanks for the info! It's great to get feedback from real world users.

I completed my first ride just after recording this yesterday, and I can confirm that my Apple Watch 7 (WatchOS 11) worked perfectly as a Heart Rate monitor on the dashboard in Zwift 1.74.2 on AppleTV 4K 3rd Gen (tvOS 18). I had the Zwift Companion app opened on both my iPhone 13 Pro (iOS 18) and my Apple Watch.
Not sure why I am watching this, just wanted to check you out after your story about Harry the TT player. Hope that shelf mount is working out well!

the motor. thats the sweet sound of a burned phase. the easy temp fix is to smack it. but that dont always work and is temporary other options are buy a replacement motor/dryer, or ignore it

It's April 2019. I just purchased the Nvidia Shield and that was driving me crazy. Also, I wanted it to stop playing the next video after the one I was watching ended. In the SETTINGS there is a setting for AUTOPLAY (On or Off). The default is on and I switched it to off. It fixed both problems.

I agree with you, this "feature" is very annoying, but Google did not added an option to disable it, why Google?
I just got a Shield yesterday. The only option they have is Music Previews. You can turn that off in settings. This helps a lot. However, previews of other types of video's there is no option to disable. Update: It still plays the video just kills the music LOL. Kind of cool but it does get old quick.

Joyce Johnson I wish I could help, but I dropped DirecTV Now and switched to PlayStation Vue (no, it does not require a PlayStation game console). I recommend you do the same. Good luck!
Sorry, Robert, just saw your follow-up. What do you mean by “the Googleplay version”? I just searched the Google Play store on my Nvidia Shield and there is no DirecTV Now app. Whether there is such an app for other Android TV boxes, I do not know. Either way, my strong recommendation is to switch to PlayStation Vue (does not require a PlayStation game console) because it is MUCH better!!!
Hi Robert - I posted that about a year ago, so you’re likely trying a much newer version. I switched to Playstation Vue not long after that and it is GREAT!!! I recently tried the free week of TH-cam, which I had high hopes for, but its interface still needs work (e.g., the guide only lets you see 90 minutes ahead, and the fast forward timer is awkward).
I have tried the Googleplay version and it does not work, it keeps displaying the following message, find out if your device is compatible and super user denied. I have also tried downloading the apk and it's the same thing and message.

The input side of this coupled with the tv guide flakiness makes this not a viable solution for live tv / cable replacement. We need a native app released for the shield to be legit and functional. Direct TV Now has been pretty much an AT&T disaster since release. Its the natural evolution of TV but was not well thought through before being released for use in large markets. In my opinion using a HDHomerun OTA or a cable service is the better flexible option with live channels; and if you prefer recording use plex dvr to record your shows ongoing.
I concur. However, for the forever-guaranteed $35/month price I locked in for 100+ channels--plus a mere $5 for HBO, I'm willing to give them a year to get it right, which MUST include a no-cost user-friendly cloud-based multi-channel DVR (that's quite a string of hyphenated words, Charlie). Otherwise, I'll be switching...probably to the forthcoming TH-cam TV, which I expect will launch with all of those features.
No, but there are some videos on TH-cam showing how to install full Android on the Nvidia Shield. For me, the easier interim solution is to run DirecTV Now on my iPad and just AirPlay it to my Apple TV. I find that easier because controlling the app on the iPad is much easier than struggling with the HORRIBLE remote on the Apple TV 4th generation (Steve Jobs would never have let that out the door).
Thanks for your vigilance on getting Direct TV Now to work on the Nvidia Shield! Do you happen to know of an Android media box, that runs full Android OS, that we could use until Direct TV Now officially gets an Android TV app? It's frustrating that it works fine on an Android tablet but not on Android TV.
will the hd be higher quality if an official app is made for shield ? since the apk im using is made for tablets
I assume it's already full hd (1080) because it looks crystal clear on my TV. And it appears that 4k live tv is still a bit rare (see here: ultrahdforum.org/resources/list-of-commercial-uhd-or-4k-services-that-are-live/).

Thank you for this! The app looks and operates that way as the lean back launcher has not been implemented on this version. For comparison look to the amazon fireTV versions, that is how it should look when it is officially released for androidTV (assuming they ever do). Sadly though the Amazon FireTV app can not be sideloaded to the AndroidTV platform due to extra security checks from amazon (making sure it is running on amazon hardware) I have been pushing DirecTV / ATT about releasing an official android TV app on multiple forums, through e-mail, twitter, and anywhere else I can lol.
Joshua Schipmann happy to help. I vaguely recall reading/seeing somewhere that there is a way to load Amazon-specific apps to Nvidia, but I haven't tried it (yet).

So, I have to factory reset my Shield for this to work? Thanks, but I think that would create too much re-work to justify the marginal value I'd get from a fully-working DirecTV Now app. However, this does give me the idea to try using one of those deep uninstall apps and see whether that has the same positive effect as the factory reset. I'll let you know about that when I can find to time to test it. Thanks for sharing!

Follow-up No. 4: Neither of the 2017 versions currently available (1.0.4.2302 or .2318) will even open. So, I reverted to the last 2016 version (with a clean install--i.e., uninstalled previous versions first, but did not reboot). Same issues remain, but at least I don't have to keep switching over to my Apple TV now. Progress! ;/)
Follow-up No. 3: Dec. 29, 2016 version (1.0.3.2131) has same channel guide bug, but all tested channels played and other interface problems appear to be resolved. I also tried playing a few non-live (dead?) episodes from various networks--including ABC, Fox, and HBO, but all failed to load. If the ensuing versions fail, I think I'll revert to this version and live with it until AT&T releases a fully-baked app for this device/OS version. More to come...
Follow-up No. 2: Dec. 23, 2016 version (1.0.3.2127) seems to have all channels working, but the same interface bugs remain and the channel guide now shows program info for only the 10-13 channels that are closest to the channel currently streaming. So, must click on channel name/logo for all other channels and then pick the currently program to switch to that channel. Only two interim versions left. I'll keep you updated on what I learn. NOTE: To be clear, I did not test every one of the 100+ channels but, in my non-scientific random sample, all selected channels streamed successfully on the first attempt.
Follow-up No. 1: I installed the Dec. 6, 2016 version (1.0.1.2110) without uninstalling the previous version. It has the exact same interface bugs, but nearly all of the channels now work (e.g., ESPN, HBO, WE). I'll update again when I have time to try each newer version.
