HARVEST TO KITCHEN | Electric canning beef, water bath canning cowboy candy & sourdough starter
What happens to the garden harvests when we bring them inside? We aren't really bringing too many harvests indoors this time of year, but we still have tomatoes, jalapenos and garlic that we need to process. I also bought beef with the intent of attempting to use my new electric pressure canner. We are also making a very basic sourdough starter. 💚💛

What happens to the garden harvests when we bring them inside? It's the end of the summer garden here in Connecticut, meaning no more tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers. But we do have pumpkin seeds from carving pumpkins for Halloween, tons of cranberries from the store, and green tomatoes to sort through. I'm also making a cranberry jalapeno jam that is delicious!! 💚💛 🥫Here are the canning recipes...

Love it. I have the silver also. I love this mixer! 🥰
You can pressure can taw beef cubes, which is nice because your canner will bring the water in the canner and the jar contents up to temp at the same time. Just make sure the two temps are approximately the same.
Yeah I’m familiar with raw packed, I hadn’t used this electric canner before and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it that way. It may have worked out better if I had. I will do it that way next time I use the electric canner to can beef. Thanks!!
The Kilcher's all have TH-cam channels do you watch? They are great and I am pretty sure they are what brought you onto my timeline!
Awesome, I just found their channel, thank you! We always used to watch them on TV, and I was so excited when her cookbook came out. Thanks so much! ❤️
@@TheBourneHomestead Yes, I watched them also and I adore Eve! ❤❤
I'm excited to find their channel, thanks again!!
Hey Krystal 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 Oh my, the garlic peeler worked well, I will try again with mine when I have got some big cloves 😮 Watching you make things with your chillies and pepper's makes me annoyed ( if that's the right word ) that I don't like them. I get fed up with not liking a lot of vegetables, like I really really love the smell of parsnips but it doesn't matter how they are cooked they make me heave 🤢 So, I really want to get into canning chicken, we have a super market called Iceland which sells a lot of fresh meats as well as frozen, last week I went in there and got loads of chicken for half price, I had to separate it all into portions and put it in the freezer. Now my freezer is full to bursting, do I need a pressure cooker for meat? I really hope the sourdough works, can't wait to see you bake with it..😊🐮🐮🐮
Hey Manda!! 👋🏻 The garlic peeler does work well with the older garlic cloves. Really makes peeling them go much faster! 😁 Sounds like you need more sugar and/or butter added to your veggies. 😆 Just kidding, I can understand not liking some things. But you always do a great job growing everything, and you give so much away which is I'm sure appreciated by the people who receive them. ❤️ To can meat, or any low-acid food, you do need a pressure canner. That's really great that you were able to stock up on chicken, we do the same thing when meat goes on sale. But it for sure takes up room in the freezer! The sour-dough continues to be a wild ride. I was able to bake a little bit with it, but I can't keep the sour-dough going for some reason and need to keep restarting it. I really hope to get better at it! Thanks so much!! 🤗
Hello!! I still haven't tried the electric pressure canner again, but maybe I will use it for turkey soup after Thanksgiving. I still prefer the presto pressure canner we have, but I will try the electric one again. 😁 Next week's video includes baking bread, making a ferment, and using the very last of our fresh tomatoes for making dinner. Have a great week!!! ❤
Why dont you leave the bloom kn the eggs?
I don't wash them until I'm storing them in the fridge. They can sit on the counter for a while with the bloom / cuticle, but we go through a lot of eggs and it's easier when they're all ready to go, especially during busy mornings.
Look at the beautiful colour of the cranberries 😮. You could put a big splash of lemon juice in as it has pectin in it. I use it in pineapple jam and it takes a bit of the sweetness away too..😊 I love it when you have a little bit left over then you can eat it straight away 😉 I've said it before and i will say it again, you really do work hard in your garden and then your kitchen, anything you grow does not go to waist 😊 I obviously write my comments as the video goes on as you added lemon juice to the next cranberry jam you made..😬😉 You need to grow your own cranberries 😁 I absolutely did enjoy this video...❤🐮🐮🐮
I love the color of the cranberries too!! ❤️ Adding the lemon juice to the cranberry jalapeno jam got it to firm up much quicker, I'm glad you mentioned that. 🍋 I like it when there's enough left over to try right away too, it's always the best fresh out of the pot. 😋 I try not to waste anything but definitely could do better with using everything we grow, like turning scraps into vinegars, or drying tomato skins to make tomato powder... someday I'll get there!! 😁 I have to research more about growing cranberries. I would like to grow our own! I always thought that they needed a bog to grow in, and we are not set up for that, but there maybe other ways. Thank you so much Manda Moo!!! I show the garlic peeler in next Sunday's video. 🤗
@TheBourneHomestead I have just bought two "honey berry " bushes. I hope I can get them to grow OK. They look delicious. You will have to get Steve out with a shovel to dig a big hole and put some pond liner in it then fill it back in with compost and leaves from the woods, that will make I nice bog.. 😁🐊🐸🐄🐄🐄
Oooooo what's honey berry!?! Please share a video about them. Are you planting them at home or a the big garden? Hahaha, I'm going to look into growing cranberries and see if there are ways to do it. 😆🐊
@TheBourneHomestead they look like elongated blueberries but I believe they taste like honey. I will send you a photo on messenger of the lable,, Yes. Please please please have a go with cranberry 🙏 💕 🐄🐄🐄
Finally, someone else that eats the seeds! I notice that pepo varieties of squash have the best tasting seeds, then moschata and maxima are not so great. But no noticeable difference in the amount of sweetness in the flesh, they all have a huge range.
That's so interesting!! I've only tried roasted pumpkin seeds, and the Lady Godiva ones are my favorite as they have no outer shell. I don't think I ate any of the seeds from that giant pumpkin we grew a few years back, but I can imagine why those wouldn't be great to eat. So it's usually just the CT field pumpkin seeds or smaller like sugar pies that we eat. Maybe I'll try the seeds from the butternnut and honey nut squash we grew this year. 😊
@TheBourneHomestead those are both pepo varieties
lady Godiva, carving pumpkins and feild pumpkins are cucurbita pepo, so I don't think that any other squash would have better tasting seeds. Acorn, spaghetti squash and delecata are also cucurbita pepo
@@TheBourneHomesteadsorry you probably already knew this
@@phillippinter7518 They are both pepo, but the lady godiva seeds do not have a shell, that's why I mentioned them separately. 😊 Crookneck pumpkins or moschata squash, like butternut, generally aren't eaten for their seeds, but I would like to try them. I have grown "state fair winner" pumpkins (maxima) and have not eaten those seeds as they seem they would be woody and difficult to roast. 😁
Subscribed as we're in the same zone.
Awesome!! Glad you're here. 😊
I know I have said this before but your choice of music makes it so enjoyable!!
Thanks! Glad you like it! 😁🎶
Hey!!! I'm so excited for baking season and completely cleaned our ovens this morning so they're all ready to go! 🍞🍪 In next Sunday's video I make a sourdough starter and also canned beef in our new electric pressure canner, or "smart" canner. 🫣 Not sure if I like it or not yet though. 🤔Also, the cranberry jalapeno jam is really good if you like sweet and spicy, it's excellent with cheese and crackers!! 🧀 When I need more, I will make a video on it. 😁
Hey there! From what I can tell, the mole hasn't been tunneling or pushing up any garlic or shallots just yet. Hopefully this weekend we'll be able to get the rest of the garden cleaned out of all the dead plants. Some rain would be great too, it's very dry here. 🍂 Happy gardening!! 😊
How beautiful !!
Hey Krystal 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 Can the goats and chickens eat the marigolds? 😮 OMG.. when you were filming on the ground I was like 😮omg, but when you set the camera on your face, well your expression cracked me up. Sorry, I couldn't stop laughing 😂🤣😂🤣 Stay happy my friend...🥰🐮🐮🐮
Haha, hi!!! 🤣 I was mad at myself. I panicked and stared at it and by the time I got the courage to do something about it, it was gone. 🫣 Steve was building something and couldn’t get over fast enough. My hope is the garlic and shallots are enough of a deterrent for it. I didn’t notice it came back or pushed anything up… yet. I don’t think goats can have marigolds, I’ll have to look it up. But the chickens probably could have!! Thanks Manda, take care!! ❤️
I set up metal raised beds for the first time this year and put gopher mesh underneath to prevent the digging pests from getting in underneath. Maybe you can do this when you put in your new raised beds.
That does work well! We put hardware cloth under a few of our other deeper raised beds and we don’t have pests from underground. These in ground beds are difficult to add it. But I will for sure be adding it to the beds that we plan on growing sweet potatoes and other root vegetables in. Thanks!!! 😊
You have wonderful videos I am not sure why they aren't getting more views? Have you researched your analytics? These are really good I feel that something is missing as to why more aren't seeing them! I will be sharing!
Thank you very much! Yes I have. We get a large number of unsubscribed return views on our videos, so we need more engagement from viewers, subscribing, getting comments, likes and shares in order for YT to push more. But it's okay, we have the best little community here! ❤️ 😊
I just found your channel today on my feed and I am already hooked already! I will be binging this weekend! You have wonderful taste in music!!
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate that. ❤️
Hey Krystal...👋👋👋 After all that canning and food making you used tins of tomato paste,, please, please, please make some tomato paste, I would like to see how it's made and is it difficult and does it taste better than tinned? Take care my friend...❤🐄🐄🐄
Hey Manda Moo!! I've never made tomato paste before. I would love to make some at some point. I imagine it's slightly time-consuming and tedious. That's why I haven't done it yet. But it's on the list of things I would like to learn how to do! ❤️🤗
Even tinned paste was once fresh :)
With the summer garden coming to an end, and the holidays quickly approaching there will be a shift in what I am making in the kitchen. There will also be more inclusion of items I get on sale from the store, like cranberries in next Sunday's video. 😁
Hey there!! I still have more to clean out in the garden bed, we'll hopefully get to some of that this weekend. We are forecasted to start getting more consistent cool temperatures, and finally, hopefully some rain! I think I will be putting the garlic in this weekend too. 🤗
Are you separating your seedlings ? If so, is it less challenging with the pellets vs seedling trays?
Depending on the seedlings, I separate and pot up seedlings. I really like the 55mm peat pellets! It's easy to separate and pot up if needed. 😊
I had one that lasted for about 6 years. Good luck with it. It's a pretty good unit. I upgraded to the Weatherflow Tempest system 3 years ago.
Yeah we live it so far. But I will look into that one next time. Thanks!!
You work so hard. I was exhausted by the time the video had ended... Hope you had a great time camping...❤🐄🐄🐄
Haha thanks Manda! ❤️🤗
Steve did get the chickens new water that day after he got the beans. 😆 This video is a bit repetitive, it's a lot of tomato rotating and processing. The sauce in this video is not as thick as I usually make, but I wanted a thinner sauce that I can turn into soup, or possibly try making ketchup again. 😊
So exciting 👌👌👌
Gosh what a great video! I'm at exactly the same point. 8 wk old chicks w 8 mo old hens. They have been together in run space since 4 wks but we're expecting rain tonight so I think I need to put them in there after dark. I wish I had a tiny kennel but I don't. Great video! Tysm
Thanks! We did this again this year, slightly differently, but it all works out. Good luck!! 😊
I don't know that I would keep the plastic, but keeping the boxes to keep them sorted is actually a clever idea.
Yeah the plastic isn't necessary. Many of those boxes don't have the plastic anymore but some do. The boxes have kept my jars in really good condition every year. 😁
Your soil is so nice and loose! I love how thorough you were at digging deep and going over the spaces you'd been to make sure you got them all.
Thanks so much! 😊 The soil usually has earthworms in it which keeps it nice, they break down the hardwood mulch I top the beds with, but the mole ate them all. 🫣
I am missing one attachment, what I consider the main piece e, the Flat Beater.
Oh no, I hope you’re able to get ahold of them to get a replacement.
Greetings! I just got a set of plants and hear I need a very strong trellis- which one are you using? Interested in purchasing something similar. Thank you for your post! ❤
Happy Halloween! 👻 Sometimes gardening in zone 6 can get tricky. 🎃 I was not sure if I wanted to harvest everything. It is so warm out today!! All of the varieties are listed in the description. 😊
Peels make apple juice, and vinegar use it all if you have time and equipment.
So good ❤
Thanks!
Just wonder, If you think it taste just as good with the seeds why do bother straining it out sometimes?
I prefer the seeds taken out because it makes the sauces more versatile. I can use the unseasoned sauce for many different things, like soup. But if I'm in a rush, or dont have time, leaving the seeds in the sauce doesn't change the taste. 😁
I was too busy and lazy so I just snapped my green beans and put them straight in the freezer without blanching. I’ve used a bunch of them and they’re fine. I’ve been doing the same with my tomatoes. I figured I might get bored over winter and can some up.
I like freezing tomatoes too. It's nice when I have more time in the kitchen to make different recipes. I've always blanched the beans before freezing. They keep for a while in the freezer and the texture is always good. I will have to try just putting them in without and see how they are. Thanks! 😊
Im not a beginner to canning always looking for new recipes thank you for sharing i pickled jalapeño today put few slices of lemons in each jar i know it changes the acidic level but lemons are acidic ❤
Awesome!! We use these all the time. I hope you like them!
Hey Krystal 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 I'm taking it your garlic peeler doesn't work either or is it just easier doing it by hand? Look at the beautiful colours in the tomatoes in the roasting dish 😮 I really can't understand people who buy frozen beans from the supermarket, they are so easy to grow and freeze and more taste to them also. I feel exhausted just watching you 😂 Well done you 👍🏻🐮🐮🐮
Haha that garlic peeler! I forgot about that. I remember the garlic press that came with it bent very easily. I don't remember the peeler working that great either, I will have to try again!! 😆 Green beans are one of the things most of us eat, so I try and grow as many as possible. I do end up buying them when we run out so I will need to grow more, especially as the kids get older. I love roasted tomatoes, they're one of my favorite ways to eat them other than fresh out of the garden. Thanks so much Manda!! How's your home garden doing?? ❤️
Do you prefer frozen green beans or canned?❤ We’ve been able to harvest a good amount this year of beans, and especially tomatoes. It’s been a lot of freezing and canning, but we’re super grateful for it all! 😊
I remember when I lived in NY a customer of mine grew lettuce through the winter in ground using frost cloth. Will you be trying this, this year? Your tomatoes are really producing for this time of year. Good for you! New subscriber here.
I would like to get some row covers to see how those work. I've used plastic, and dome covers, but not the cloth yet. Thanks so much! 😊
Wow, your garden looks like you are ready for Halloween 😮😅 A lot of people pick tomatoes when they are blushing, including me..😮, they taste the same which ever way you do it 😉 In fact you can pick a whole branch of green tomatoes, dip the branch in water and it will carry on growing and turn red.. 🐮🐮🐮
We are ready for Halloween! 🎃 The tomatoes do taste the same either way. It's starting to get colder here at night, I had to harvest all the green tomatoes today. 💚🍅 Thanks Manda Moo! ❤️
Great video! I wish you success in your work
Thanks so much! 🌻
Tomato plants aren't good chickens. They contain solanine which is toxic to chickens. They also should eat green tomatoes for the same reason. Not trying to be mean or rude. Just wanted you to know
For sure! I said in the video we don't give the plants to the chickens, I had a separate bucket. Only the tomatoes. 😊
She clearly stated in the video multiple times that she wasn't feeding the tomato plants to the chickens
Do you have cold storage? (Root cellar/cold room/cold basement)
No we don't have cold room storage. 😊
Hey Krystal 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 The northern lights are amazing, we could see them a month or two ago 😮 Lilah is going to have green fingers like her mama ❤ I saw you throwing tomatoes at Jacob , cruel mama..😮😂 Amazing harvest as usual...xxx🐮🐮🐮
Hey hey!! Are you normally able to see the lights? Did you get any pictures of them? Lilah loves being in the garden, actually all the kids do. Even when I’m throwing tomatoes 🫣😆🍅 Thanks Manda!!! I hope it’s not too chilly there! ❤️
@TheBourneHomestead no, we have never been able to see them before and I didn't get any photos.. My daughters has never been one for gardening but her youngest loves it in my big garden, she will try anything, she said one day " nan, I eat healthy don't i" she is only 5...😊 You should have a mushy tomato fight for a bit of fun then the chickens can clean up after you..😂🤣😂🤣🐄🐄🐄
Hi from Alberta Canada, wondering if this type of kiwiberry can grow in Alberta
Hi! I wonder that too! I'm not sure how cold it can get there, but I don't think these vines could handle beyond -30°F or -34°C.
@@TheBourneHomestead yeah i was wondering too 😞😞😞 wish we can grow those here
@@Rna67 Maybe research hardy varieties and see if any would handle the cold there! It's possible they can. Good luck!
Your garden is beautiful, the fresh air and peace are very good for reducing stress and balancing yourself. Harvesting your own vegetables and cooking organic food is very good for your health. Thank you for sharing these wonderful pictures with everyone.
Thank you! 😊
Hii, what's the shelf life after canning? Thank you 😊
Guidelines generally say one year. nchfp.uga.edu/how/make-jam-jelly/jams-jellies-general-information/storing-home-canned-jams-and-jellies/
We for sure had a few very cold nights, but the garden is still hanging in there! The seed varieties are listed in the description. Happy gardening! ❤
Great idea canning bit by bit, I should imagine it being a bit overwhelming if you had loads there to process at the same time 😮 Omg, I was thinking about getting one of them choppers,😱, how are they dangerous? Have you ever had nothing to can, like ever...? If so what year was that?😂🤣😂 What do you eat cowboy candy with? I bet you are exhausted when you finished, I know I was just watching...🥱🥱🥱🐮🐮🐮
I've seen other choppers that look much nicer than the one I have. I'm going to search for one. This one is dangerous when we go to wash it, the chop part is very very sharp and difficult to clean sometimes. 🫣 I have several times during the year when the canners get rest. 😆 End of summer and wintertime, they get a workout. 🥫🥫🥫 Cowboy candy is like a sweet spicy relish. It's so good on burgers, and chicken. But I also have turned it into dips with bacon and cream cheese with crackers. We use it several different ways, I will have to show that at some point. 🥵 Yesterday I canned a couple things, and between that and cooking meals among other activities. My feet were tired. 😆 Thanks so much Manda!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
