had a friend of mine who would drive a truck up this every morning taking the la times into the san jaquin valley. back then the trucks were slo. hed jump out of the truck and then shift gears as the gear shift lever was on the outside of the truck.

what is the actual status of the road ? is she fully open , partily open. partialy closed in spts thanks .

thanks for looking afteer the grand lady. i think in future we would need to know the locations of all of these in case the interstates got shut down for some reason

Question: why did the alignment sit so high up the ridge when its successor road - US 99 - was built down below in 1932, as does I-5 today?

Got to drive the RR once before it was closed. Drove it W to E. OMG, the vistas were so unbelievable.

I got to drive the Ridge Route before it was closed. It was such a magnificent scenic drive, and entire vacation in a few hours. I really miss it. I know it's hard to maintain good infrastructure in a geologically active region like the Transverse Ranges, but we know a lot more about engineering now.

I live in Granada hills and have been wanting to drive on this road ever since I discovered it. Bummed to see that it’s closed… can’t wait till it reopens

I visited the dam site in January, 1964, having read a book about it in junior high school. The big chunks, including the toppled "tombstone" were more intact, of course. We also got to tour Power Plant # 2, downstream, that had been destroyed by the flood and rebuilt. As we drove up the old road, we saw the canyon walls and floor with only scrubby plant growth. We passed through a narrower opening into a lush valley of trees and heavy foliage- this was the upstream side of the dam, and it showed how the floodwaters scoured the landscape below. That was when I realized how powerful the flood was.
