Very interesting. The 1905 Leicester hunger March to London was led by Amos Sherriff who never went to school, worked from the age of 6 couldn’t read or write until his 20s and rose up to be Lord Mayor.

My parents were the first residents in their flat in Derwent Tower in Dunston in the early 70s. They had to move out shortly afterwards because of the terrible damp. It had been very badly built and also used to sway excessively in the wind. They always tell me the story of when my uncle went round to fix a lamp they had and managed to fuse the entire building. There was a couple of deaths in the tower during its lifetime - shortly after it was built, someone fell down the lift shaft. He had called the lift and got in when the doors opened - but the lift wasn't there. In the 80s, a lady fell from the top floor (the exact same flat my parents had lived in) - it was believed at the time that she may have been pushed. Apparently before it was built, the council had wanted to build a number of similar towers in that area. They were warned by the architect not to build even one because the ground was so unsuitable, but they went ahead regardless. The underground carpark used to flood and was often closed as a result. All in all, it was an example of the disastrous building programmes that so many councils in the UK undertook in the 1960s and 1970s. Shoddily built, inappropriately designed and becoming a haven for antisocial behaviour over the years. The neighbouring maisonettes in Dunston had the same problems, as did other similar buildings in Gateshead, notably in Clasper Village and St Cuthberts Village.

The 1st death was a suicide & he threw himself down the lift shaft before the lift was installed. Tragic, for the family & friends.

Very Informative ,Particularly I Liked the photo of the frontage of Tuckers ` Turks Head Brewery ` . A very important photo record that is ,of the site of this long gone Tyneside area brewery. Note the exterior water tank up near the roof line of what must have been the actual brewhouse buildings in the rear . The tank was likely the Main/ or secondary (later addition ) brewery ` Liquor ` (i.e brewing water supply ) vessel . Sited in order/ commanding the other vessels themselves on the various floor levels Inside the brewhouse itself . Water supply would either be directly off the City/ public mains or more likely ground water, i.e. ` surface ` well or deep Artesian bore hole at the site itself . the Latter sources of water supply were generally the norm for 19thcentury breweries , rather than having to use a municipal water supply.

Very interesting video. I remember Gateshead in the early sixties. I was employed by Walls meat division as a van boy delivering to Gateshead , Prudhoe and Hexham. There were so many old buildings around in those days including the pubs. I have fond memories of that old blue star sign. I always thought the general decor of Vaux pubs was a little better, not so much black! Well presented and thanks for the blast of nostalgia. - Ex Machem in Wiltshire.

I loved the 70's.... We lived next to Noble & Lunds factory. One of my sister's worked at Jackson's The Tailors along on the by pass. We used to get xmas decorations out of the skips outside of Matadors Paper Mill which they threw out if they had any little faults. 😄 Get our ham shanks & bacon bones from Crawfords to make soup. The school that became Colemans Plastics was said to be haunted. 👻 It was. It was empty after being Colemans & a few of us went in through the open windows at the back & heard stuff moving so we legged it out of there much quicker than we climed in! 😳🏃 😆 Those were the days! Great fun we had. Had quite a few power cuts. Our mams used to turn off our tellys when we got thunder & lightning. Dragones ice cream was the best! 😋 Showaddywaddy broke down in their van on the by pass on way to play at the Newcastle City Hall & we got their autographs. True, they broke down at the bus stop along on Abbotsford Road along from the footbridge. Nice guys they were to us. Those fantastic fun days are long gone. 😔 The air we breathed was fresher. People were far nicer to each other. Jeez! 😒 Look at the world now.....🤦

William Wailes who originally owned the park was quite a busy man during his lifetime. And very prominent in his field of stained glass manufacturing. Not only did he fabricate the glass for the west window of Gloucester Cathedral, and a stunning example that is, but he was also commissioned to glaze decorative windows for many churches around the country, including 2 or 3 in Kent, where I, as a native to Gateshead now live. But it didn't stop there. His work can be seen as far afield as Sydney, Australia. And Pennsylvania, in America. And even in Mumbai, in India. So the local boy of Gateshead was well sought after for his work, it seems, and he has left a lasting legacy. I wonder where his descendants are now, and what they do? It would be interesting to know if they are still involved in the same industry.
