Join us for another busy day on the farm! We kicked things off by feeding the cattle and saddling up the horses for a ride. Fong got to work power washing the calf shed, while a delivery of stone arrived at the new house, where construction is in full swing. To wrap up the day, I grabbed the power washer to lend Fong a hand. There's always plenty to do-come along for the ride!"

Out of interest why will you weight those cows before you sell them? You have looked at their fat cover and your decision is made to sell them, is it just for you own info or for record keeping? I understand that you cant manage what you dont measure, but realistically what would you gain in this instance?
For my own records, no animal leave without being weighed. I need to know kill put % ect. All animals are weighed on arrival also, so I know lwg
Hi Pat. Great videos. Is it possible in general to finish friesian bulls u16 months? I bought one by accident a few years ago. I finished him at 15.5 months O+ 3- 293kg. The reason I ask is that other breeds are expensive this year and was considering friesan bulls as an option. 1 isn't a great sample size.
It is but weight is the issue. If u can have them close on 400 kg at 12m u should be OK. Otherwise forget it I'd say. And of course depends how heavy yiu feed them
Those John Deere overalls suits you pat, ull have to purchase one
I suppose your right ✅️ 😏
You know your own land ...but i'd take it easy on too early grazing ...maybe a few weeks ..??
@tomgreene1843 once it's dry from the 1st Feb we are out
well Pat, why CAN over Urea?
@@KieranH81 top dressing spring barley
Much obliged as always Sir
What dose did ya give the bulls before ya put them out? Bolts, blackleg vaccine and something else?
That's it + weigh and make sure they all.have 2 tags
I could do with sending a few to Paula to get them leading like that lad
Would that theory suggest that its less optimal to finish cattle in the shed in the summer?
Possible yes, but we see that at grass also. Cattle eat every little durning not period's,
Pat the sound is too fast Very hard to listen to
My apologies it has come ok think my phone was wrong
The hole video or 1 part? Seems ok.on our phones here!
It was ok here, also
Cattle out early nothing like it have a few out last week hope to get a few more out nxt week.
How come you are using the diet feeder for chopping beet over the bucket chopper 🤔
@@farmerjohnny7 faster
Great talk about the calve trade 👍🐄
I’d imagine that cattle on high energy diet would gain more as only a small % of the increased intake would be used for heat and the rest would be weight
My thoughts exactly Graham.
Are you fattening cows or do u breed off them ?
Id say your right. Thsts probably the reason behind outwinterd stock doing so well
Very good point. In the 1st few years, I had cattle i out and wintered them and they did .8kg day on 1kg nuts + silage + redstart .
The lad you visited up the north would be the man to ask with the constant weighing every time they drink, jeesus I know better than to get caught out on the hours🤦🏼♂️😂was a code when you started it twas lik 14128 or something🙄
New hollands do like their codes
Out of interest why not buy cows in the mart to finish
Same reason contractors do work for other farmers
How much a day per cow to feed
@@patcollins8638 still don’t know why farmers contact rare, is it more profitable than buying their own cattle?
I lke to buy my own cattle.Feed hiefers must off the time.Have a batch off bullocks in at the moment.Ģreat prices for beef but buying in to go again is dear.
@@Del-xr9nx I don't know but I'd imagine it's cash flow, the cost of purchasing 50 cows would be significant, versus a steady income per day to feed a batch of someone else's cattle
😊
Some hours on the t7😮least your depreciation won’t be bad running the diet feeder, jesus she doesn’t look a day over 6k
Good stuff
I was wondering would you pay for the pig slurry or are they just happy to get rid of it? There's a nice bit of nutrients in it, but it can't be cheap transporting it
Rule me in got a few quid out of that run
Another fantastic video mr cork 😅always grate video s I'm glad I discovered you few weeks ago n I nearly watched all ur videos back to from when you started keep them videos 📹 goin n mind that fine tm newholland you have there in yard fine oul bus the tm old school go for ever kind regards Mr valtra wexford
Romantic farming….. ya would know Valentine’s Day is looming Pat
Friesan bull calf prices are going up anyway, a lot of lads do that system and the sexed semen has reduced the amount of them available big time, and surely if your getting €200 a head more for finished bulls more than 12 months ago and inputs have reduced by a lot u can afford to give a little more to the man/woman that bred, calved & fed them calves
@johnoc2573 imputs haven't went down. Milk powder is up, labour is up, sheds are up straw is up electricity is up, interest is up machinery is up, contractors are up fuel is up.
@ 2023 grazing season vs 2024 grazing season fertiliser is almost half, and winter 23/24 vs 24/25 meal is down €100 a ton, electricity is also down from 12 months ago, when things are good we need to be honest coz god knows there bad for long enough
Help ❌ extra pair of hands ✅ 😂
Well said Pat 👍
You might not agree with me Pat but looking at the profit of an animal as being sales less costs less buying cost = profit is not at all how I see it. It’s not what the animal cost as a calf it’s the cost of the replacement calf that determines your profit. Considering the rise in factory prices then calf prices have to rise as the scope is there. Using your method your are trying to think what an animal will make in 2 years as the basis for buying the calf now. Where’s as I think the price you can pay for a calf is determined by the bulls you’ve just sold or about to sell. That’s how I look at it anyway
From what I gather you are working on a basis of how much you can afford to pay, I work on the basis of what margin I need per animal. The year you loose money will you hope to get money with the calf you are buying ?
A bad year never broke any1 it's the good year that breaks lads
Couldn’t agree more pat fellows think they will never be a poor day again in beef prices the price of a calf shouldn’t be anything the more considering the work load of rearing them
The cable works both ways. Export wind energy from Ireland when we have a surplus, import nuclear from France when we're going short. Will make supply more reliable and efficient on both sides.
That cable will be exporting most of the time, We have a massive capacity for producing renewable energy. Our problem is a lack of infrastructure to transmit to the grid for use.
600 for 2 years need every. Penny of it is much profit out that.
Alot work rearing calfs .
Your dead, right pat . If dairy farmers want big money for their calves this year and think they will have the same buyer back again, good luck to them . The Calf to Beef system is a tough game .. Like, dairy man has a good few years. I got out of the game so far, and long may it last ... But they should not you try squeeze the last euro out the beef man.. You made some great point pat 👏
The automatic feeder will keep the price of calves up. Beats bucket feeding .
@@PVAglue-fi4kc how do u make that out ?
The two farmers I know who have them, bought 2 more each and a part time farmer I know is after buying one. I'd say there's many more like that around the country and I'd doubt that they'd leave their new feeders idle because calves are more expensive, after doing very well out of the system for the past 2 years. Calved were hugely under priced also.
I agree fully on the price of calves. You also have to remember the hit that was taken last year from 2022 calves. They took the hit with the rise in fertilizer cost and the milk powder almost doubled too. I don't think calves will rise at all really, you'll always see the headlines of some silly price here and there but they are not the normal. What's going to happen next year with a possibility of far less calves being exported? There's a lot of variables and it's a high risk low reward game. I can afford to take a step back, but j can't afford to go all in and get burnt to be honest.
100% spot on. No1 ever went broke doing nothing
Spot on pat and a very very important point ya nailed on the head was the care of the calf up until youve bought him.
Excellent comments on the value of young calves Pat. Good Calves Good Money.Ordinary Calves =Ordinary Money!
Totally agree pat when I go buying tisthe sellers herd I look at 😉
€50 is even to much for them calfs even getting them for that margins are tight
Two half hour videos in a row your spoiling us Pat, any bother with the maize heating on a day like today with the heat? Can nearly see the grass jumping out of the ground. As a dairy man please god the fresians make €100! As a mart supplier with solid calves off of ad lib whole milk we find the time you get into the mart is the biggest variation in price no matter what weight or colour the calf, once the big buyers have their trucks full your giving them away the competitions gone, good calf into the mart 6am will do substantially better than 7,8 o clock in peak time we find
The John Deere suits you pat😊😊
You are correct, buying a calf now entails taking a view on beef prices in 2 years time ...calves like what you are buying are a two year project and the intensive 16 month beef suppliers may expand in the meantime thereby providing a damper on demand ...any switch to lamb , chicken and pork could also be slightly offsetting factors as would some impact on wages - and demand potential - of US tariffs. Adding in any uncertainty on input costs would indicate the need for some caution in pricing a calf .
Hopefully the price will continue to rise or at least stay steady, but if drop.was to come alot of.money could be lost on expensive calves
100% agree on the calf prices but I think once lots of calves hit the ground next month they'll be glad to have buyers
Pat you should get a john Deere will look well in the yard
I would agree Pat,trying to get 20 calves on 20 teats is hell.Far easier if theres only 17 or 18.
Can't afford 1
Great content……you could really do with buying a coffee machine. Don’t know how many videos I’ve seen of drinking takeaway coffee 😅
Really love watching the videos thank u for making them from the USA

Well Pat, Do you charge the framer per day or per kg gained?
