Boss OC2 vs OC5 Demo - Which is better for bass?
Two Iconic Boss Octave Pedal go head to head over 3 different musical scenarios. Though the tone is close, they don't sound exactly alike. Recorded straight into a Focusrite Clarett with no EQ/Compression.
To create this demo, I first recorded my bass direct into Ableton without any effects. The bass track was then sent out of my interface, into each octave pedal separately then recorded back into Ableton (same process as re-amping).
In my opinion, there is a difference in tone between these pedals. The OC2 has more tone while the OC5 sounds more subby. Depending on the genre of music, one will be better than the other. Also, the OC5 has a lot more volume and features than the OC2. Which is better? That's up to you to decide.
Basses used:
Fender Jazz Customshop 60s (Stack knob)
Spector Euro LX5

Taylor GS Mini Bass played over the song Keep Forgettin by Michael McDonald. Recorded straight into a Focusrite Clarett with no EQ/Compression. The GS Mini is not really suited for this style of music in my opinion, but as it is channel tradition here it is. The tone was at 10% because the piezo pickup is so bright, in person the tone is much darker and woody sounding. I'll bring this bass back...

Alembic Rogue 5 with old Markbass Andre Gouche strings played over the song Keep Forgettin by Michael McDonald. Recorded straight into a Focusrite Clarett with no EQ/Compression. Alembics are very unique and well crafted instruments. They have a certain tonal character that makes them instantly recognisable. Also the note clarity is very impressive, especially when the bass has new strings (thi...

Spector Eurobolt 5 played over the song Keep Forgettin by Michael McDonald. Recorded straight into a Focusrite Clarett with no EQ/Compression. Super modern sound, reminds me of a Ken Smith. The neck on this bass is quite round/chunky and has a narrow string spacing. The 35" scale takes some getting used to but it makes the B string very tight and musical. All the knobs were centered in this dem...

This Jazz bass has the Stack knob control layout instead of the 3 knobs. It makes it versatile in a unique way. In this demo, all controls were 100%. Lovely classic Jazz tones! Fender Player I Precision strung up with Daddario Chromes Flatwound (ECB81) strings. Playing over the groovy song Keep Forgettin - Michael McDonald. Plugged directly into a Focusrite Clarett interface with no EQ/Compression. This is the classic P bass tone that a lot of us are familiar with. Even though the bass is quite loud in the mix, it still sits nicely behind the vocals. It's the perfect ...

90s Pedulla MVP 4 with Bartolini soapbars and Daddario EXL170 strings played over the groovy song Keep Forgettin by Michael McDonald. Recorded straight into a Focusrite Clarett with no EQ/Compression. This pickup set seems rarer than the standard PJ set with hardly any demos on TH-cam. I love the growl this bass has, reminds me of Tobias/MTD basses. The controls are Volume, Blend and Tone. The ...

Fender Player I Precision strung up in C Standard using Markbass Andre Gouche Stainless Steel signature strings. Playing over Michael McDonald's - Keep Forgettin tune, such a legendary bass line. Recordes straight into a Focusrite Clarett Interface, no EQ/Compression. The bass wasn't set up perfectly for C Standard but I was inspired by Anthony Jackson to give it a go. I had to play the strings...

The bass sounds good, but that low 5th string doesn't for the song at all

When I was started out playing, I broke string on a sunday. Went to the neareast music store and got some flats as that was all they had. Expensive. I did a few songs with a pick at that time, it sounded awesome.
