Melanchthon Creek Farm
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 เม.ย. 2024
Melanchthon {‘muh’ ‘lank’ ‘thuhn’} Creek Farm is a small homestead in central North Carolina. Farming has been in our family for generations and we wanted to continue when we built our home. We began with in-ground gardens of vegetables; corn, green beans, squash, okra… you get the picture. And over the years with raising two kids, work and life happening we gotten away from those times. With the passing days, gray hairs of wisdom tend to take root in more ways than one; we decided its high time we get back to being more self-sustainable. We decided to start this channel to document our journeys. We're first to admit we are not experts; we only wish to share our adventures, hopefully be an inspiration and help others. We intend on moving toward a permaculture approach for our land with the addition of chickens, sheep, pigs and other livestock. Join us in our journey as we seek to get back to the basics of living off the land.

winter will be here before you know it, but until then, we have to protect our gardens
Seems like all we get is summer and winter nowadays, we got to be ready for anything
I’ve got to get my stuff ready for the frost. Been so busy with Mountain Relief that I haven’t had time or the daylight left to get it in place. Hopefully Saturday I can get mine ready. Hoping it won’t frost before then.
@@deepriverfarm3615 God bless you brother for the work you’re doing! I showed 39 was the low last night, I believe it will be warming up a bit so we should be good a little while longer.
It’s amazing how so many of the channels I subscribe to have been affected one way or another by the hurricane.
@@OneMound1 agreed the impacts were far reaching
I think at the end of season I would just pull them up and throw on the burn pile, DO NOT put them in the compost pile. I get this with squash occasionally and I just pull them up and burn the plants.
Sorry to see the plastic did not last as long as it should. I really like the look of your greenhouse and raised beds around it. I have a small channel also, we are developing a farm on some land we bought, Our main crop on our farm will be chestnuts. Check us out if you like.
@@MySliceOfHeavenoutdoors thanks for the comments. I will definitely check you out.
Howdy. I started growing giant pumpkins last year, and lost my two best plants by early August due to powdery mildew. This looks a little different from what I had, but I'm quite certain it's the same thing. It's getting a little late in the season to make doing anything about it worthwhile, but if you're determined to turn your plants around, I recommend cutting all of the dead and dying leaves out. Next, mix a solution of sulfur powder in water (about 1 tablespoon per gallon of water) and spray the leaves with it. It won't cure the mildew, but it should slow or stop its progression, saving the rest of your plant.
@@thegrandadmiral7963 thanks for the advice, I’ve decided with all the rain and humidity we’ve been getting to let these go for this year.
Thanks for creating this video.
You have some deer taking advantage of a free meal!
@@deepriverfarm3615 yep, guess they will be feeding me next
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm fill up the freezer!
Never seen that before you’re probably right. I’ve looked on the Internet and I believe you’ve got a correct diagnosis and I agree with you that Nem oil may be the way to go. The good thing about it is the garden will have all winter to recuperate from what organisms the oil kills.
Not sure if the pumpkins will make this time; but we'll see how it goes.
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm so far mine are ok. I haven’t seen any of the issues you’re having. Keeping my fingers crossed
@@deepriverfarm3615 glad to hear that with all the other issue you’ve had this year. Hope your pumpkins make good, that way I know where to get some if mine don’t 😂
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm I’m hoping to get some so I can have some to make pies with and save more seeds.
That’s what we got was about 3 1/4 inches of rain. Looks like your broccoli is doing well. Your lettuce and your cabbage all doing well. The black gold is the only way to go.
@@deepriverfarm3615 yes sir, glad a birdie told me about that😉
That spinach seed will be a seed to save. Plant that yearly. Good for your health.
Definitely saving but I'll get the wife to collect those...LOL
Good video on saving the seeds.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback
Glad to see you are having some good germination. That’s really good seeds. Hopefully next year I’ll have better success with the flowers I plant around the garden. Mine were hit and miss. The good thing was I had plenty of bees that came in to the garden to pollinate it.
@@deepriverfarm3615 good seeds, better soil. We need those pollinators.
Using the hand rake as a measuring tool makes it easy and convenient.
You’re going to have a nice fall garden.
Nice pile of chips! Those will be great for the project.
@@deepriverfarm3615 was hoping to start this weekend but didn’t get down the list very far
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm I know the feeling. I was wanting to start the coop build out but I had to saw up some trees.
That’s the ticket. That Almanac is on target with the signs and moon phases.
@@deepriverfarm3615 Christmas came early today. Time to start planning vacation around the gardening.
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm that is always a good thing. That helps tremendously when planning stuff
Maybe it will work on the trailer. Could be a major time saver.
If I get it to work on the truck, I will probably get another one for the trailer.
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm keep us posted on this
This is very interesting. Be sure to let us know how it works. This could be a lifesaver when hauling any type of dirt, rock, mulch etc.
I may still cut the bed cover rail so it will work in the truck bed. I envisioned backing up to the raised bed and just rolling it off to fill.
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm that would be great and talk about saving time.
I’m glad that the okra is working well for you. Mine is also producing right along.
I love this 'Papa John' okra
I’ve done the same thing. My target date is also Thanksgiving for some pumpkin pie using our homegrown organic pumpkins.
I planned on planting some Small Sugar pumpkins but read they are easy to cross-breed. But we have a plan for those next year.
Very informative! A lovely garden! Did you use landscaping fabric to line your raised beds?
Thank you for the kind words. I had some old landscape plastic I used to line the inside of the raised beds around the greenhouse and tater boxes. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm absolutely! Thanks for the info & please keep it coming! Quite inspiring & educational!
@@crystaldavis9231 Thanks for the support and encouragement!
That’s a great thing to do. Be looking for ways to be more self sufficient. Takes a lot of research to make an educated decision.
I was hoping to do a strawberry ground cover then plant other berries and fruit trees throughout but with those black walnut trees its back to the drawing board.
This is a good how to on pickling okra.
@@deepriverfarm3615 appreciate that… just another way to preserve our food.
You got lots of seed for next year
@@deepriverfarm3615 that was the plan, just didn’t expect them to still be growing after the drought stunted them so bad. Just another testimony for black gold!
@@MelanchthonCreekFarm the BLACK GOLD is a hidden gem. Most people would think we are nuts for planting in it.

Good
Look at that morning mist. All I get in Texas is morning heat.
@@Bremmer2023 it’s been really nice past several mornings but August is not over yet. That Texas heat is brutal!
Squash, bell pepper and tomatoes, all had to be pulled. Still too hot for fall plantings.
@@Bremmer2023 we’ve had a cold front roll through that’s brought cooler thermos the last few mornings but the heat is returning next week.
I’ve got to do the same thing. I’ve left them only because I’m waiting until September plant dates.
These cooler mornings have me itching to get this going but I’m waiting on the signs.
Same. I have to make chicken wire cages to protect my pumpkins from the squirrels.
@@Dandamayn I have some small fencing I may put around my pumpkins this fall, good luck with yours… but I’m probably run electrical wire around everything next spring. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Do the roots on those beans stay shallow, or do they creep below the grass level?
@@Bremmer2023 most all green beans have shallow root systems. I grow in raised beds that are about 8” of soil.

This year has been the first year I’ve had in several years to have squash bugs. They were bad this year.
