We can't buy GMO seeds
I wish GMO seeds weren't available and out in the market. Unfortunately, in the United States you can buy treated and genetically modified seeds. You just might not realize it. If you go to a place that breaks up bulk seeds, these seeds can be genetically engineered and treated. I've asked to look at the bulk bags and it says on them that they may contain genetically engineered ingredients. The seeds are broken up into white packages that they mark what is inside. Plus, the seeds were the wrong color, which is treated. They are treated with GE material and synthetic pesticide/herbicides. I've also accidentally bought treated seeds in the regular store not realizing they are genetically engineered and treated, but it said so right on the package. I didn't think we had it GE seeds available to individuals, but I was wrong. Plus, unless the seeds indicate non-gmo or the company specifically says they do not carry any seeds that are non-gmo, why risk it. Thanks for watching.
@FoodPlusFreedom I've never seen it but I only buy heirloom from reputable companies. So there might be seeds out there that I'm not aware of.
@ Very Smart. We either save seeds, swap with other savers, or buy like you do.
Mostly right. "GMO-Free", as used by seed companies is most definitely a marketing scheme designed to exploit public concern about genetically modified crops. None of the common varieties of seeds available from seed companies fit the most common understanding of "GMO" in the public mind (transgenic). GMO seeds aren't something consumers are likely to encounter by accident for the same reason that pharmaceuticals costing thousands of dollars aren't likely to be encountered at random: The companies that produce these things jealously guard their intellectual property so they can charge sky-high prices for them. That said, there are a few things you could run across. Seedless watermelons are seedless for the same reason that grocery store bananas are seedless: They're sterile triploids. Neither occurs in nature, and in the case of watermelons, at least, the process is partly done in a lab through artificial means. No genes not already present in watermelons are involved, though. The "white russet" styled potatoes in the grocery store have a gene deliberately introduced into them using methods used for transgenic crops, and you could probably attempt to grow them in your garden. The genes involved came from potatoes, though, so they're not transgenic in the conventional sense. You could also have your own saved seeds contaminated by commercial crops, if you grow near commercial crops that are commonly transgenic, like corn or sugar beets. But you won't find such seeds being sold by commercial seed companies in any way such that you, as the consumer, would be able to identify them as transgenic. Incidentally, transgenic organisms occur naturally both in and out of the food supply. Every sweet potato is naturally transgenic, containing a gene from Agrobacterium. "Treated" is another vague term, but wouldn't generally be anything related to gene modification,
@@bobbun9630 I will agree with some of what you say. Non-GMO has become a huge marketing situation over the years for seeds and food because not all foods have gmo counter parts. As far as consumers not getting gmo seeds by accident, it depends on where you are getting your seeds. I agree that most GMO seeds are sold in mass to the large farmers. However, farmers (or groups of smaller farmers) do and can sell off their extra seeds to the public. No, you probably won't find on purpose GMO seeds at a big box store. Very true about getting transgenic contamination even within your own garden depending on what is being grown around you. With that said, seed companies such as Fedco Seeds test their beets and corn for transgenetic contamination. Any they find that are affected they don't sell. Though they can't guarantee all seeds are not contaminated. This tells me there is a huge issue for GMO contamination. There are no guarantees. I stand corrected on the treated seeds, for they are not genetically modified necessarily but coated with a synthetic herbicide, other biologicals, etc. Thank you for the information regarding bananas I was not aware they are suppose to have seeds. We just need to have full transparency of food we buy, seeds and livestock we grow, so everyone can decide what they want and don't. As you can tell I want food that is not poisonous to eat or grow. We all have our own definition of clean eating. Thank you again for your information, it was very helpful. Thank you for watching.
Best vanilla ever! I still have a bit left from what you gifted me. ❤️
You must not be baking enough. LOL Enjoy it and make more!!!
Thank you
Organized seeds, organized mind, organized garden! Let's make this gardening season a productive one. 🌾
Most definitely!
Your chickens must be a Hardy Breed? I like this, great that the chickens 🐓 can go outside! Good idea to have a light for heat.
@@gbltheolechurch5acrehomestead They are a mixed breed. Each year we take the hardiest hens keep them and incubate. The enclosure keeps them out of the weather.and light help too.
12/2…read your BIO! Interesting indeed. WINTER, COLD temperatures and SNOW are our winters here at The Ole Church 5 Acre Homestead! We are just getting started with our first 6 layers this spring!
@@gbltheolechurch5acrehomestead winter and snow can be challenging. There are so many ways to do things and make animals work. Congrats on the layers!!
I've been looking all over for something this simple!! I've been wanting to make soup dumplings, but the gelatin has been the hardest part for me to find any recipes as simple as this!
Homesteaders unite! Let’s keep those chickens comfy all winter long. 🐓☃
i love this! you can get greenhouse plastic that has nylon reinforcement in it. thats what i use on my outdoor beds in CO at 8,200' and i find its better than what i was using. anyways - excellent video! beautiful job with your garden!
Hoop houses for the win! 🏡❄ Fresh food in winter is a true gift. Love this!
Great job.
A really creative idea. Thank you for sharing
Had lots of rabbits. Gave away lots free to families with children. Grew lots for meat. Ordered timothy seed. Timothy is prime rabbit feed, green, or dried for hay. Timothy is a bunch-grass, making it easily controlled and non-invasive if cut at the base when the seed heads (the most nutritious stage) are not yet entirely brown. It has a very long window until the seed heads dry off and birds cleanup any seed that falls. Timothy hay stores beautifully and Timothy seed is extremely inexpensive when bought in a 50 pound bag. In my milder climate area, I could easily pullout any clumps to thin and let those remaining grow as perennials with the individual bunches enlarging over the years. It also breaks up soils, even clay soil. Its roots are confined in a bunch, and it doesn't have stolons.
Get them off of the ground
Hi Janet! Could you add the buttermilk to kiefer grains and ferment to make a more sour store bought taste? Just thinking!
I've never tried this before. What a great idea. Please let me know how it works! I need to try this too. Thanks for the idea.
They look delicious! I love dehydrated apples 😊
Cool😊
I needed this idea! Gonna do the rest of my apples today. Always like to say I hope we all keep helping each other even as times get crazier around us, we the people care about ONE ANOTHER :)
I hate when people act like gmo means its terrible evil food, you know most fruits and veggies we have are genetically modified through seletive breeding? Look at old Renaissance paintings of watermelon and see the difference in Just that one example
Thank you for your comment. Selective breeding is not gm (genetically modified)or ge (genetically engineered). Genetically modified or genetically engineered means the food has been genetically altered at the cellular level in a lab. Many have been genetically engineered with pesticides. Pesticides that kill bugs and weeds for the perception of a crop to grow better. If the pesticides harm soil and bugs, what’s it doing to humans? Food is genetically altered for other reasons as well, but we aren’t informed of the alteration. Selective breeding is working with nature. Genetically engineering is altering nature.
Why can't it be Coors beer?
It has to do how it’s pasteurized. I was told by an old commercial goat farmer 15 years ago. Coors was the only one he warned us about. Now there are tons of beers available. The darker the beer the better and good hops.
Hank Jr baby!
Very influential, keep up the good work! Regards, Salvatore Collana @CucinaCollana
Thank you!
Great organic and natural!
What variety is that?
The variety is either Mantilla or Black Seed Simpson. I planted them next to each other. I will know when the seeds dry for they look different.
Keep it up❤
I do the same thing every summer good job
that's so cool!
I love your videos and so does my grandma
Mother nature? You mean, Creator, FATHER GOD (YAHWEH). 😉👍🏻👏🏻
Any beet greens left?
No, I should had kept what I could but I needed up putting them in my compost
@@FoodPlusFreedom The beet greens are far more nutritional, than the beets, themselves. Good for the chickens and their egg production or the compost, but better for us. My grandmother always put vinegar on the dinner table and we would add a little vinegar to our greens (spinach, chard, beet greens, collards, mustard, etc.) and it was delicious. I still gobble down piles of them. Beets are delicious (especially, roasted), but those greens are the GOLD. Blessings in FOLLOWING CHRIST. 🙏🏻👣👣
Saving seeds is paramount ❤
There's nothing like fresh fruits and vegetables out of your own garden. This is very helpful thank you for making the video
Wonderful. Very instructional. Thanks.
Is this sarcasm? 😂
Are those Anasazi beans?
They are suppose to be cranberry beans, but they look more like the Anasazi, so I think they crossed.
I was taught the box method as well.
Lol ... 3 days ago, i woulda had a ton of fried green tomatoes!!!
We had a ton of them too. Plus, frozen green tomatoes for another day.
To ripen tomatoes you put them in a paper bag with a banana 🙌
seal the box, bag to insulates the gas they release
Put one ripe tomato in the box with the unripened ones and they will all start to ripen
Ruining perfectly good green tomatoes
I used a thick tarp laid on the floor, spread them into a single layer and let them ripen with the windows open for airflow but not in direct sunlight. Monitor them everyday to remove the rotting ones. I made a mistake of putting them in a cardboard box and coved them. Some started to rot coz I didn't monitor them daily. The smell was extremely bad and wouldn't go away for weeks. It was my first time but I gained some valuable experience.
They're better when they ripen on the vine. They lose a lot of flavor this way.
The vine is best, but with weather ripening when green is better than no tomatoes. The flavor is very nice.
My mom would use a brown paper bag
Yeah my family has gardened for as long as I can remember and longer. We have always ripened in the sun and preserved or stalled ripening in darkness. But those are some good lookin maters! ❤
You're basically making those awful grocery store tomatoes. You have to allow them to ripen on the vine if you want that delicious homegrown flavor and soft ripe texture.
I don't know they are very tasty, with a soft ripe texture. I'd prefer to let them ripen on the vine, but the weather isn't cooperating.
@@FoodPlusFreedom you'd know better than I :)
Put a banana with the tomatoes, they will ripen faster.
Never heard of anybody ripening tomatoes in a paper bag only bananas. I ripen my tomatoes in the window sill
Dedicated mom wants some fruits of her labor too 😅😂
The sun is a bigg help to develop that color.
Always in a sunny window. Not sure how you would expect them to ripen otherwise. Who were you always told this by? Did they never actually try what they were telling you?
We have ripened tomatoes for years in the box, just slowly. I learned this technique from the organic farm I worked on.
