As A British Museum Member: The Parthenon Marbles Should Go Home | Alexander Herman
Listen to this insightful debate as to whether the Elgin/Parthenon Marbles should be repatriated. The marbles are ancient Greek sculptures from the Parthenon, now housed in the British Museum. The controversy stems from Greece's claim that they were illegally removed by Lord Elgin in the 19th century, while the UK maintains their legal acquisition and the museum's role in preserving them.
Alexander Herman is the Director of the Institute of Art and Law. He has written, taught, and presented on various topics concerning art, law, and cultural property. His work frequently appears in The Art Newspaper, and he has been quoted in numerous publications such as The Guardian, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Telegraph, ArtNET, The Financial Times, and The Globe & Mail. Herman is the author of two notable books: "The Parthenon Marbles Dispute: Heritage, Law, Politics" (Hart Publishing, 2023) and "Restitution: The Return of Cultural Artefacts" (Lund Humphries, 2021). His work has been cited in the UK House of Lords and in an amicus curiae brief before the US Supreme Court

I'm sorry but I cannot listen to this - the first 5mins is enough. One of the worst anti-semitic massacres took place in York England in 1190. Blood Libel, the Jews accused of killing children, began in Norwich England in 1144. The Dominican order placed among the Jews at Oxford long before the Jewish expulsion, to harass them, and get them to convert to christianity. The Jews expelled from England by Edward I in 1290. The first Crusade (1096 - 1099), and the mob that followed behind them, massacred Jews on their way to the Holy Land. Hitler was a monster, yes, but who or what created him? and why was Germany and its empire chosen, as the slaughter house? Why were books burned in medieval Europe? Why was the brilliant progression of German culture cut short in 1933, books burned in Berlin, Art condemned as degenerate, and the Bauhaus shut down. Why was the best and most advanced of German technology, culture, and the rest, destroyed or usurped by greater forces? Perhaps you touched on some of this in your lecture. But I am tired of all this German bashing, and Germany being treaded as usual, as the scapegoat - when the elephant in the room - is never mentioned. The victors always write the narrative, the history, as they say. Sad.

Greece wasn’t even a country when Lord Elgin took them. It was ruled by the Ottoman Empire and the Ottoman Empire sanctioned the removal of the marble statues. Neither the Ottomans nor the local Greek population looked after it even cared for the Parthenon - it had been partially blown up by being used as a store for munitions and a Christian church had been built inside it. The process of removing the statues took days and needed scaffolding, so if the authorities didn’t give their permission how come they didn’t intervene to stop the removal - they had the opportunity.

The ironic thing is, had the marbles not ended up in the BM, nobody would have put any value on them or perhaps they may not have existed at all today, and that is true of some other artifacts in the museum too. But as we know truth does not matter anymore and it's all about tearing down the old world and values and making way for whatever is coming next- probably something sinister. I think now they should go back , along with all the other stuff everyone is making a claim against, the British taxpayer has cared for this stuff (and made it available for free to anyone who wanted to view or study),for too long now. Wherever this stuff goes it will be a novelty for a while and then probably end up in some billionaire's private study room..

Elgin was a burglar, a snobbish scam who disgracefully removed this iconic treasure aggressively with shaws and took his loot in boats.. Some of it was sank and lost forever and the rest was used to decorate his vila.. As a proper scam he lost his wealth in gambling and then sold his loot to British Museum. BM as a proper colonial institution received the loot and created a propanda that people don't beleive in any more. Elgin the scam who the Brits call a Lord 😂, did not save the Parthenon marbles. He robbed it and there was no one to stop him. There is no document and no other evidence that the marbles were legally removed from the Parthenon temple. That is part of the propaganda. Everyone laughs with they way BM and some uneducated Brits including politicians deal with this sameful story. Once somebody told me it is a matter of imperiliasm 😂. I wonder how many of these dicks have visitied the BM and if they ever went to Athens to see where the Western civilisation and democracy started. I m sure many of them have been to Malia and Faliraki partying and drinking continuing the legacy of Lord Elgin, the marble seviour 😂.

If we dont accept this offer it shows what the British museum want. To keep the marbles .After all why would the British museum want to deny the public the chanc to see new artifacts ?
