Most guitar players used 8s until Steve Ray Vaughn hit the scene, Watch Rick Beato's episode regrinding strings. Many people simply like 9s.

Since the pitch interval between G and B is closer than all the others, then by rights, if anything, the guage of the B should be closer to the G (i.e., thicker) and farther away from the high E.

Hendrix used 8's to 38, it was really common then. Not bad for a beginner:-) hybrid mix, same as your saddle height, if you own choice. What works for one fails for someone else

Most electric guitars are engineered for 9-42, my vintage Yamaha Pacifica manual from 1989 for my 921's,521, 712, 721, 912 recommends 9-42 electric guitar stings, the whole guitar was designed by Rich Lasner. I think I'll trust Rich Lasner and my 40 years playing and working on electric guitars.

This is not the lightest strings. 7 is the lightest. Also, maybe TUNE your guitar. Your entire video sounds like big string propaganda.

Newbie guitarists like Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler, Angus Young, Randy Roads, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Jimmy Page and others all apparently used strings lighter than 10’s

Lots of myths when it comes to guitar string gauges. I’ve often speculated why the late-greats would come up with the custom sets that they would swear by. This seems like a no-brainer topic for YT, though. I’d like to see more investigation and testing. When I was a teenager I used standard #10-sets. I experimented a little but I didn’t see the point of making a career out of string gauge switching (…and even though I was pretty obsessed about changing out my strings on a regular basis). In more recent years, I’ve pretty much gone to standard #9-sets (…maybe that had something to do with worsening psoriatic arthritis???). There _have_ been more interesting string alternatives available so I have experimented more than in my youth. CURT MANGAN strings have been among the more interesting offerings for my money. Thanks for your investigation…

I use 8 guage strings and they bend easier and have the same tone as a 9 or 10 or 11

Are so wrong! They are not for beginners, they are for live!!!!!!!!!! I'm 64 years old I've been doing this since 1973! You obviously haven't been a live man! Your macho men will use heavy strings, (like big muscles) have you ever been invited to go to a gig because they have a brilliant guitar player! All you hear is Diddley, Diddley, Dee, dee, Dee, deeeeee? (Very muddled) Very dull? The reason is because the tone is over coloured. Too much low mids! Depth is very easy live, it's 3 dimensional. It all depends on the size of the room. The length, the height etc. heavy strings will work in the bedroom, the music shop, rehearsal room, and anywhere but live!!!!!!! High end is very hard live. It's ok to have a boost pedal, but, all the girls stick their fingers in their ears untill the solo is over saying, they're very good, but god, they were loud! It's because the strings are too heavy! They don't understand live sound. I've toured since the 1970s .look at Brian may? Barry Gibbons? All the big names who tour who know what they're doing. Stay away from heavy strings live. For god's sake I'm pleading with you all! Don't do it! It's music suicide!!!!!!!! I've been on bedroom walls. I own a house. I've got a massive huge touring PA a massive vintage Gibson guitar collection, I drive a Jaguar. It's all come from listening to people that can. Take the advice, or lose it all. Good luck, and peace to all.

I was die hard 10s guy, then tried 9s then i was blown away by how easy it is to bend, then bought epiphone sg with 10s and I'm definitely going back to 10s, the reason being is also - Tension. 10s feel much much better for faster arpeggiated picking, it's not as flimsy

I just can't get along with 9s, the treble strings are too floppy. I use 11-14-18w-26-36-46 so basically 11s for the treble, 10s for the bass.

A string being easier to bend should not ever be a problem. Lets not use math to make up problems that dont exsist.

A guitar isn’t supposed to feel like a toy when you play it, In my humble internet stranger opinion that’s what regular 9’s feel like. The reason why I’m here is I was looking for a way to set up a Les Paul type guitar so there’s more tension but it’s impossible with those lighter strings it feels too loose for me lol there’s a slapping sound I don’t like when you play chords and not enough resistance when bending lol Will probably try a custom gauge in the future.

I went 8's on my PRS and 7's on my Explorer :) Now that's slinky. Not really thought about the even distribution of tension, so thanks for the thought provoking vid.

🔴🔴🔴 Many people need filling for music. The guitar is a sensitive instrument, that's why the guitar is played delicately with feeling. (Sreve Vai, Jimmi Hendrix, Malmsteen, Van Halen, etc) I use a 9.46 guage and that's the best guitar playing for me.

As a person who uses 11s. I also find the same problem but on the G. The string gauge I use is 11, 14, 18, 30, 42, 52 and the G feels very bendy and not like the other strings. 19s would be much better.

I broke my e string the first time I tuned up. I have a fender Strat. I love heavy strings. I’m used to playing bass and baritone guitar. If you ever play a baritone it is weird. I don’t use a pick but you need a pick on a baritone guitar.

I use NY D'addario 8-38 and they are amazing. Been playing for 30 years and used everything from 8's all the way to 13's. People have a bias for thick strings that isnt warranted. Watch rick beato video.

Balanced tension is the way forward, I use 9-12-15-24-34-48 Progressive tension on the wound strings helps with flubbiness.

  • @SixStringOverdose
    @SixStringOverdose 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Although the B is the theoretical culprit, the practical, felt problem is with the high-E, as the G feels closer to the B in terms of tension due to the fact that its diameter increases, therefore it starts acting a little bit like the wound strings. So when playing, although you can feel each string is different, the only *real* problem is the high-E feeling much stiffer than any other string, especially when bending. All other strings can achieve a 1 wholestep bend quite easily, while the high-E feels like it cuts through your skin and also kind of reaches its ellasticity limits at the end of the bend, sometimes feeling like it's on the verge of snapping.
