Exploring the intersection between history and popular fiction
Real History of Saint George Pt2 The Crisis of the Third Century
In 200 CE the Roman Empire is at the tale end of a period of relative internal peace and stability across the empire known as the Pax Romana. No one could imagine that within 30 years the empire would begin to crumble with almost nightmarish speed into what's known as the Crisis of the Third Century.
The first non-Roman emperor, Maximinus finds his moment at the very pinnacle of Roman power by virtue of the Edict of Caracalla which only a few decades earlier made all free people in the empire Roman citizens. Maximinus Thrax, a Thracian with a name that would make any comic villain jealous, is thrust into ultimate power and yet powerless to stop the revolts springing up around him.
This is just the start of a period of convulsion and transformation of the Roman Empire as Franks, Goths, and other Germanic tribes threaten the western provinces, while a transformed Persian Sassanian Empire under Shapir I seek to retake ancient lands in the East. As successive emperors try and fail to tackle the problem of how to be in multiple places at one time provincial governors take the defense of their homelands into their own hands breaking free from Roman control in an attempt to preserve precious soldiers needed to defend their lands.
The Roman senate is left completely powerless and feeling like the wallflower at the prom as legions thousands of km from Rome take it upon themselves to elect competing emperors.
Events reach a low point in 260 as the empire finds its own emperor a prisoner of foreign powers, multiple provinces have declared independence, piracy runs rampant in the black seas, the Germanic tribes always a perpetual psychological fear of the Romans are raiding freely, and Persia is retaking ancient lands that have been Roman possessions for 200 years.
Such a succession of events leads to an average turnover rate of one emperor every 2.8 years. It is a period of time referred to as The Crisis of the Third Century. It is into the apex of this crisis that Saint George (if he existed at all) would have been born. Growing up in, and then becoming apart of the Roman machine that stitches back together the shattered empire. But before we tell that story, we look at Crisis of the Third Century.

In 110 CE Pliny the Younger is appointed governor of the Roman province of Pontus-Bithynia. Within just a few months of starting the job he uncovers a community of Christians, some of which are executed. This just scratches the surface of a much more pervasive spread of the strange religion as more and more Christians are uncovered, either through anonymous accusations or as a result of torture...

In 66 CE a nobody, and minor priest by the name of Eleazar stood up to the oppression of Rome and declared “No more” in the bloodiest way imaginable. Sending a message to Rome that would have devastating effects on the nation of people who lived in Judea. Yoseph ben Matityahu (better known to us as Flavius Josephus) is likewise a minor priest, but of noble birth. Sent to defend the northern bor...

Since the start of Roman intervention (and then later rule) in Judea there’s been a sense of unfinished business so to speak. I'd like to apologize for an error I made in this episode. In my initial discussion on Pliny the Younger I mix up the Flavian Dynasty emperors somewhat. Vespasian is not assassinated, he dies of old age. Titus is maybe assassinated by his brother Domitian. Sorry for the error. Just slipped through the editing and review process.
very cool
What have the Romans ever done for us?!
Lol. Classic
Conteúdo muito bom. Mas porque precisa entoar as palavras dessa maneira?
I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by my intonation. It's the way I speak.
@@GrimDarkHistory I agree, great content and research. I had the same thought about pronunciation. For example, Herod is usually pronounced as “hair-rod” as opposed to “hair-rode”.. not sure if that is what he meant. Either way, great stuff.
@@ChaseEnglund thanks for the listen. Glad you enjoyed it.

Welcome aboard!
Not to be rude, but this was not very informative about what the different sects actually believed in or really anything about them.
Appreciate the feedback. This is just a small part of a much larger interview I had to a historian who specializes in this time and place. Our interview was covering the much larger context of the world and social pressures within and surrounding Jerusalem and Judea. I agree there's not a lot here, because, according to my interview there isn't a lot if any concrete evidence about these groups. What they believed is not written down. Who they were is also not really written down. At best the community at Qumran has been pointed out to maybe being the Essenes, but according to most recent info, that's actually not a definite and the Qumran community may have been their own sect with their own distinct beliefs, and the Pharisees seems to be the ultimate ascendant group and the evolution of their beliefs is what seems to survive into today. I do plan to provide more details on these groups in my 3rd and final episode in the series, but that will be coming out in August. Apologies if this doesn't scratch your itch for details, but there really isn't a lot of solid evidence about who these groups are, or what they believed. At best we know the Pharisees because the evolution of their beliefs is what seems to survive into today, but we also cannot definitively say Pharisees believed X, Y, or Z, because it wasn't written down. This whole time period is about pointing out that these groups have no clear definitions and as much as we'd like to understand them. It's more important to understand the cultural tensions between some of these groups, or at least between powerful people and these groups, and the fallout from that that bleeds through generations into the Roman period I'll be covering in that August episode.
Please take into account that the Hanukkah story was also a civil war in that the Maccabees were against their fellow Jews who had adopted Hellenism. Ironically the Maccabees founded the Hasmonean dynasty which later became corrupt. Additionally, archaeology can mislead when we combine different time periods. Galilee in the time of Jesus is very different from that after the failed Bar Kochba revolt. The popular current trend to have Jesus as a Greek speaker and at home in sophisticated Greek culture having spent much time in Sephoris is in error because it commingles archaeological findings from a much changed Galilee of later years.
Thanks for your comments. There was actually 10 civil wars by my count over the Maccabees period, at least according to Flavius Josephus. Check out the full podcast and episode 2 in this series releasing July 1 for full Maccabees story
Is this ai animated
Yes. My podcast is, and will always be free and a passion project to share my love of history with people. So I'm forced to find hobby-budget ways to help engage with the audience who aren't necessarily interested in the long form audio version of the podcast. I thought I'd give this a try and see if enough people enjoyed it that it my be worth investing some more effort into.
Long live to the seleucids.
Thanks for the efforts. Def going for part 2

Any book reccs for the copper age?
Probably the most facinating book on the copper age (and earlier) I've read is a book called The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity. I wish I had read it prior to creating this episode. Some of the content would be different. Covers how societies and civilizations form. What influences them. Talks about a lot of different civilzations from Neolithic to today. A health chunk of examples draw on new ways of thinking of some copper and bronze age societies and their history. Just a warning though the first two chapters can be a little hard to chew through if you're not a sociologist. I struggled with it, but powered through and after those first couple of chapters (which were basically a history of sociology and thought) it started digging into all these societies.
🤙 good enough to bounce around a decent conversation
Thanks this series were my very first ones on the podcast from months ago. I'm slowly releasing content on TH-cam. I'm looking to try and make these more visual but that requires some competent video editing skills I don't have. So there's a learning curve there. My newer content is improved. Better research, better audio, and what I hope to be more interesting stories and information. My fall series is on the fall of Babylon starting next month. But if you're an audio podcast fan you can find Grimdark History on all podcast platforms. Hope you enjoyed enough to listen some more. and thanks for listening at all.
