A CANOE PERSPECTIVE || A paddling circuit in the Scottish Highlands with Martin Trahan
In May 2022, I travelled to Scotland with Canadian long-distance paddler Martin Trahan to paddle a small but formidable route. However, a series of tribulations made our expedition even more challenging. This film documents our journey whilst exploring the reasons why canoeing is more than just a form of recreation but a way of finding purpose, identity, and perspective in an ever-changing world.

THE GLEN BEYOND || A canoe journey into the heart of the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS
มุมมอง 35K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In February 2022, the British Isles were hit by three consecutive storms, some of the strongest seen in decades. In the days before the storms arrived, we decided to change the plan for our canoeing expedition whilst we were already on our way to Scotland. Instead of paddling the exposed lochs along the west coast, we opted for a more sheltered location. A glen tucked away right in the heart of...
THE LAST WILDERNESS OF SCOTLAND || A canoe expedition into a remote corner of the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS
มุมมอง 1.2M4 ปีที่แล้ว
At the start of 2020, my friend Ian Finch and I wanted to travel up to Scotland to paddle around some lochs for a few days. But after the year's events, we had to postpone our trip. After spending most of the year indoors, in late September we were finally able to embark on our journey, but now it needed to be so much more. This film documents our attempt at completing a circuit linking up a co...
may Jesus Christ be with you
wow, never knew the beauty Scotland has to offer. Got to visit asap ! Great video, cheers from Belgium !!
Stop making videos that show large fires in sensitive National Nature Reserves like this follow the guidlines.Thanks.
It's Loch laddie Loch. Thats no place to have a huge fire how did the beach look after your visit ??? You are on sacred ground.
Congratulations - a beautiful, beautiful film! Stunning shots and great soundtrack/commentary.
Every single frame of your documentary is pure MAGIC
I love these videos but it's sad that few people are willing to attempt adventures like these with traditional wood/canvas canoes anymore. These rubber, fiberglass and plastic ones just don't have any of the majesty and beauty of the old wooden ones. I know Simon, Bloke in the Woods uses a cedar strip which are better but still not the same as the traditional construction method. You lose so much of the cinematography element by the boats themselves being kind of ugly and mundane. Bill Mason was the true legend, running rapids with wood and canvas canoes.
Having a chilled out Sunday and came across this, loved it,scotland is my next trip.xxx❤
You are a very talent filmmaker Jamie with a wonderful eye for the natural beauty that surrounds our planet. Five Star Film ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another outstanding film from Jamie Barnes. Held me spellbound throughout. Five Star Film ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a beautiful film, so well produced and edited. 👍
Hi Jamie, what time of year did you film this? Thanks
Hi Jamie! This trip was filmed in early February 2022.
*having paddled a whole continent its fair to say he knows a BIT about paddling* ❤
😂
@@JamieBarnes" i went into the woods - and came back taller than trees " 🤝
A rough adventure for sure. Paddle on! 🤘🏼
That was a crackin video and really well made too.Such a beautiful place.👍
Everything about his video is amazing.
So how do I do this?
Hi Jamie any more if your fantastic canoe trips planned in the near future 👍, great watch on all your trips 👌
Crazy the lockdown impacted your ability to go into the WILDERNESS. We’re all puppets.
lovely filming and narration, we need more quality stuff like this on TH-cam ... loved the adventure too
Brilliant to see you in my childhood backyard. I lived very close to those lochs in a house called Rhegreanoch just down the glen. Fishing and walking within an easy walk. Fantastic film and I’m looking forward to seeing more from you!
Thanks, I enjoyed reminiscing on your great video. I spent a lot of time in Scotland many years ago, from the Western Highlands to the Cairngorm Plateau. I have lived in Western Canada for 19 years and it amuses me that Canadian friends think their is no wilderness in Britain. I can say that by far the most remote and challenging conditions I have been in were in Scotland. The only thing missing in Britain are the extreme low temperatures, alpha predators and the extreme distances.
really enjoying your films Jamie, thanks for sharing. Is your Nova Craft a Tuffstuff version? If so, how are you finding it, pros/cons etc all the best
I’m pleased you’re enjoying them! It’s one of the last royalex versions they made. I’ve used a tuffstuff one as well, theres honestly not much difference in it to me. However, I don’t really do any white water paddling so maybe i’m not pushing it hard enough to see the differences.
@@JamieBarnes I have a tuffstuff, TBH not as tuff as the name might imply, I find it quite fragile. Like you, I don't challenge it with rocky waters as I know it won't take the knocks well. However the weight is the main reason I bought it, the ability to load/unload solo from roof bars is crucial for me
Am looking to do a trip like this in the summer 🌞
I wish you the best of luck with it! 😁
Barren land looks horrifying
I made my home in Highlands of Scotland about 1999 and have seen most of its nook and crannies or have we ? it looks it will take close to 100 years to explore all of the Highlands . Each year we try to see a different area different loch and glen yet it just goes on and on .
Way too much narration, otherwise a gem. Thank you
well done mate yea being outside is lovely even if you just going in random lines
What an awesome adventure! Love the video! Subscribed. 😊
Great filming and editing. New sub that’s for sure
It’s a colony not a country 🇬🇧
Super film and adventure. Just from watching I miss my kayak camping adventures…
1:30 that’s Lancaster service station!
Very nice video and a fun expedition.
Very beautiful! Thank you!
Ok, I’m 2 years too late for this party… but what a beguiling 15 minutes. Beautifully shot, stunning visuals, perfect pace of narration mixed in with letting the scenery do the talking. Subscribed and please keep them coming! Enjoy your adventures…
Thank you for you time to share this experience with us!
🛶 A new subscriber jamie 🛶🙌👍
Great adventure, but lads, those hard shell canoes are pure shit. Time to get yourselves a quality inflatable that can take all kinds of rough water, Mine even keeps going in the waves when it has turned into a paddling pool. It's also very comfy to sit on, and easy to roll up, pack into a rucksack and carry on portages. Trust me, I've used mine in seas and lakes and rivers so rough it beggars belief how well it took it all.
Hey, what loch is this one?
I just watched all 3 of your films, all filmed, edited and narrated fantastically. I look forward to more!
mate, I dont know how you do it, 4km across the shite Scottish bogs throw at you with a Canoe, I shit it walking, big time. Ended up thigh deep a few times in what looks like slightly wet ground, knowing damn well you are going in, but no choice to go in! I bet your mate from Canada doesnt come back!!! I also laughed, you brought too much camera gear, the only "long distance" canoe trip I did was down Loch Sheil, we loaded the two man kayak thing (like yours but must have been bigger) 2 x 24 cans of beer under each seat was the first thing in. Having never paddled before and hitting a headwind, I never had the muscles for this, we probably got about 3 hours paddling before we quit, found a nice wildcamp and stayed there for 3 days. Thankfully, the Scottish Gods were against us and decided that it would do a 180 on the wind and have it in our faces on the way back too. I say thankfully, because it taught me a very valuable lesson, take a motor.
Back again to watch this a second time. It’s still an amazing film. I can’t believe it has so few views! It deserves many, many more.
Personally I set off on these adventures, get to the first Bothy and never go any further!
Up there August 23. We looked long and hard at the portages and decided to skip by and explored Lochs Dubh and Glencoul further north. Off the back of this beautiful film I have no doubt we will return. So dreamy.
Great film thanks 🙏
Really enjoyed your short film, Jaime, you captured some amazing footage. What part of the Highlands did you canoe through, it is stunning?
The conditions were not that bad why didn't you go for it?
Your video creation skills shine though. Really enjoyable watch. Keep them coming. Videos like these inspire me to get out on my canoe.
What a great video, typical Scottish weather.
