This is a solid video. The shit at the end def ripped off asura’s wrath. Didn’t know Wukong lacked combos. No ranged attacks is kind of wack. They could have added something to disorient opponents that are 3 stories above you. Seems like they had all the ingredients but didn’t know how to put them together.

It's "prescribed combat" that is the distinction, where the game basically tells and expects you to do a certain thing. In an action game you have free access to many different options so when an enemy does some activity the question is "what do YOU do to counter it?" Western developers and reviewers love prescribed combat but it's a distinctly "non-Japanese" design philosophy. It isn't even a question of skill, there are action games that are, at least if we go by achievement rates, provably harder than any Soulslike, such as DMC3. You can fight Beowulf like your average rollslop or you can fight him like Dante, the question is whether you're skilled enough to capitalize on opening up Beowulf. Can you hit Beowulf in his eyes and follow up when attacking him, without him smacking you and making you look like an idiot? When Beowulf starts doing his ground pounds, do you want to get out of the way or leap above the shockwave so you can immediately get back to hitting him? Do you reel back in fear when Beowulf uses his feather attack and try to keep your distance, or do you charge forward and keep rushing him down? It's not a question of whether or not you need to be skilled, it's the difference that DMC rewards you for being skilled, and actively encourages you to do cool stuff because high-risk options get you higher reward. If you stand in between Agni and Rudra, bait them into attacking at the same time and they both drop their weapons you get a huge payoff of free hits. DMC5 is generally lower difficulty than other games in part of because how much the player can do but it maintains this philosophy. The largest difference between some of the more oldschool stylish action games (DMC3, Bayonetta, God Hand, etc.) isn't that they aren't hard, it's that they didn't really use difficulty as their key marketing point. Also games have the distinction between, "Did you just clear the boss, or did you actually do it at a competent level?" and the Style Ranking system is the perfect benchmark. If you clear a stage, but do it with a D rank result you know that you really need to improve, if you do it with an A you know that you're doing well but probably have space to improve, and if you do it with an S you know that you're getting it - plus in DMC3 since you're judged on multiple criteria (which makes getting the S Rank a pretty big hassle) you know exactly WHAT you want to focus on improving. Basically a Souls game just has a high skill floor (sometimes only if you place limitations on yourself at that), while stylish action games are about having a slightly more accessible skill floor but having an unlimited skill ceiling, and it has a construction of the gameplay loop that pushes you towards that ceiling.
