1978 Fretless Fender Precision Bass Overview and Playing
After the lovely 1969 Fender Jazz from my last video, I thought I'd keep up the vintage flavour with one of my personal basses; my lovely 1978 Fretless Fender Precision!
Although it's not my main gigger, I really enjoy playing this bass when I'm at home or looking for that distinctive Precision thump!

Ashdown LB30 2.N Bass Amp Overview
มุมมอง 885ปีที่แล้ว
A 90 second overview of Ashdown Engineering's latest Little Bastard bass amplifier. This 30w all-valve head has some clever switching up its sleeve, an inbuilt two-notes load box so you don't need to run a cab, 6 switchable cab sims, two DI outs (a dry and one with cab sims) as well as midi and line-in for reamping. Mega!
I think Derek Forbes (simple minds) used one on two of their best albums ,sons of fascination and new gold dream.
Wouldn't a fretless precision bass be just a bass? Since the frets make it a precision bass?
Is that the stock pickups? The tone sounds really bassy to me, I would try to eq it out a bit. Love those basses, been drooling over 70s fretless p basses with the maple neck for a little while now haha
@@jonashayes2508 stock pickups, amp tone with everything flat but bass tone rolled off for the last two clips (which is where this bass sounds best tbh to me - I want bassy from a fretless precision and it suits that neo-soul/r&B vibe). I have other basses when I want a bit more zing
What's up with the plastic under the neck plate???
@@BigSunn0 good question! It's a neck plate gasket Fender used during the 70s to protect the finish from cracking or denting under the neck plate, as a lot of people overtightened the neck screws after adjusting the truss rods.
Lovely bass and great playing - thanks for sharing Matt!
@@xtendless thank you for the kind words! You're more than welcome! I've still got so many basses to go through 😂
Skillful playing and unlined fretless basses look so very cool 😎
@@OonaEskeli thank you so much. Yes, unlined certainly looks cooler although I prefer lined fretless because it's definitely easier 😂
That thing is amazing!
Looks really cool. Been on the Hunt for a feer less p bass for a while. I do play the ultra p bass, a very good bass
If the finish is not the same and somebody replaced the frat board then that is not a true 1969 bass
I’ve had one for a couple of years now and it’s one of my favorite basses ever! So much fun to play and that SD pickup sounds massive
How did you find the G C F projection, I have the MK1 hbz, great BEAD, but thins out more the higher up the neck I go...
@@laurenceellis8311 that's a really good question, as with all of these things it's hard to get that balance. Personally, on this instrument I've found it quite balanced across the strings (it certainly sounds dynamically rich to my ear in the first bit of the video when I'm playing chords!) I think some of the issue is that with any bass, as you play higher you're losing the fundamental m and starting to get more overtones, which makes the notes sound thinner. I've had no complaints with the bass, though!
@mattparkerbass very strange Matt, I also have a Conklin GT7 with bartolini pups, and that sings like a canery up and down the entire neck...I really do like the HB and I got it really cheap (150 euros) and after swapping out the tuners, doing a restring (pyramids) and a top to toe setup, it plays like a dream, but I'll be darned if I can't get more output from the stock pickups...
@@laurenceellis8311 interesting! Perhaps you could try a boost or EQ pedal to help balance those highs and get them sitting right in the mix?
great player , thanks for the review
@@danram69 thanks for the kind words!
Cool vid yet again! I've never owned a jazz bass although I've played for 12 years.. 😆 My first bass (Epiphone Toby Standard IV) had the JJ configuration, though. Might need to give a proper J a go at some point!
You absolutely owe it to yourself to try a 60s spacing jazz bass!
Wow, looks in pretty good shape for a 55 year old :)
Indeed! It's very cool
I love the different woods and choice of finish
Whats precision is that? And the pedal please
@@cacadordorio Squier CV 60s precision and direct into an Ashdown LB30 head
@@mattparkerbass amazing tone dude cheers
It sounds full and classic
@@richardcautorina5190 Indeed! It's a really good sounding bass, lots of tonal variety available
Love mine!

OK, here we go with the bullshit nitro tone paint again!
@@anthonyb5279 at no point did I say it affects tone 👀 I simply like it because it's vintage correct and wears nicely
@@mattparkerbass Its not a vintage guitar and it wears off fast. Its NOT good paint. Im so fucking sick of non luthiers going on about shit they know nothing about like "vintage" is a validation for doing things cheep shit.
As much as I like the traditional designs, especially the P-bass, sometimes these more unique ones look suuuuper cool 🤌🏼 Nothing wrong with the sound either, so surely a great bass 🎯
@@OonaEskeli it's a really good bass, tons of tones available and I really like how almost everything is built in house 🙌
It's great to hear the bass in a mix and then isolated. Thanks!
@@BassComb thanks man, I'll definitely keep that aspect in mind for any future reviews 🙌
Beautiful! ❤ The bass is too
OH WOW. ME WANTS
You got 50% through the video without mentioning the bass vi, proud of you ❤
Unfortunately I had to talk about the amp first to lure people into a false sense of security
Cool vid! 🙂At the moment I don't have any space for a head + cab system of my own (I have even sold my combos, haha) + can cope reasonably well with gigging ampless, but I still like to check out bass head videos every now and then. And because I am definitely going to buy a head at _some point_, it's good to have some knowledge of different options! This Ashdown one and the Katana-500 from Boss seem to be quite convincing, at least. Keep the content coming 🤟
Totally get the space thing. I went amp and small pedalboard, to just pedalboard rig and now I'm back to head, cab, pedalboard. I just prefer having a dedicated bass amp I can control for my own cab rather than sharing the PA with everyone else. Hopefully you can grab a amp again someday 🙌
deeply dishy!
It's a nice bass, but pretty pricey, considering that there are no premium features (bridge, those lollypop tuners and pickups are cheap) and it's MIM. For a short scale, the Squier Paranormal Rascal is really good and about 1/3 of the price. And the Sire U5 or U7.
What are you on about? Tuners are £140 a set It’s nitro and also relic (time is money) Pickups are Seymour Duncan. Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last 5 years the price is average. I have a Rascal too. Yes it’s a great bass but you’re paying almost £400 now for a Squier
Not a flats nor a Mustang person myself but an enjoyable review and excellent playing! 🙂
Thank you! 🙏 Shortscales with flats are definitely their own thing and can be an acquired taste, it was a really fun bass, though!
Nice review!.. good balance of information and playing🤘.. Such a cool bass, would love to try one out by myself😊
Thank you so much! 🙏 They're really fun basses, definitely worth trying one!
Always great to see more 7 strings out there!! A brave move by Harley Benton.

@@OonaEskeli thank you so much 😊🙏
Where did you find that tree?
It's available from the Thomann website
@@mattparkerbass okay, that's great. But how do they ship it? with a truck? it's so big, haha.
A friend of mine has this exact bass which he strung "backwards". Instead of having the high F#, he put a Low F#0 instead. So now it's tuned to F#0BEADGC
@@steffomca762 I could see this working really well in that tuning!
this looks like the perfect bass for what i need, would love a demo some day :))
@@razzmatazzduck go check out Jonny Dibble's review!
Thanks for the review! 🧡
Magestic instrument, but please develop in multiescale. 😊😊
Honestly that bass sounds surprisingly good!
Great video!
Sounds great! Amazing video man ❤
Lemmy woulda loved the name of this amp 😁
Why can’t I find more basses from 1982? Genuine question. Would love to have a “birth-year bass” for my collection.
do you run only the torpedo DI or the normal Di as well for recording?
In this, I just use the torpedo because I like the cab Sims and wanted consistency. I have ran it at gigs as a DI with no cab sim and it also sounds great, but my preference is through the torpedo.
@@mattparkerbass Awesome thanks! i've just ordered one, and am very excited to give it a whirl.
Hi Matt, where can I buy this?
Hello Jake, it's available directly from Ashdown Engineering's website or you can purchase it from any authorised Ashdown dealer. It's a great head, let me know how you find it!
