Big Bar of Silver On The Fly!!
Last weekend I embarked on another fly fishing trip for sea trout, with North Westerly gusts of up to 30mph battering the West Coast of Scotland I managed to find a small windbreaker which proved extremely successful! This is possibly another Personal Best Sea Trout caught on the 7 Weight fly set up. Absolutely over the moon! Hopefully you guys enjoy the upload.

Great day going after springers on Upper Farleyer beat on the River Tay. First time on the beat and couldn’t have gotten better conditions, the bright sun wasn’t ideal for the fishing but it made for an amazing day on the water! How do you know where to start looking for sea trout in the sea?

    • @theanglingfront
      @theanglingfront วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Brian, in my own opinion, when I look for a new area my go to motive is to find a fresh water entrance running into the salt water, or even finding rocky areas with lots of kelp and mussel beds that isn’t of great depth, usually I will just fish an area consistently and try put as much time and effort into it, luckily for me a live a stone throw away from a lot of decent fishable areas, so I’m very fortunate to be able to put a good amount of time into fishing, but let’s be honest you will get sea trout in most places especially if there’s sprats or shrimps as this is what the sea trout will feed on. Hopefully this is decent enough information as I am not an expert, still learning but just giving you what I think from my experience of sea trout fishing, 😁

      The thing to remember is fluorocarbon is invisible in the water i don’t think i’d go as high as 15lb but if it works for you and your confident, in dirty water yea but on a clear water 6- 8 lb as i think they can see the thicker line, fishing the river for them when i stop getting takes if i drop down 2 lb the catches come back, the other point is you can only put around 1.5 lb of pressure on a rod

      @@theanglingfront I learned to fly fish on un kept banks on the Ugie that runs into the Sea at Peterhead at night. We fished with stoats tails as a tube fly and a treble tied onto a biro pen ink tube. It was pretty deadly. In the Western Isles you catch them at all hours fishing a muddler on the dropper trailing a goats toe or my favourite a teal blue and silver. On the river cast at 45 degrees and vary the retrieve but listen to any advice from the locals or a Ghillie. To be fair I did most of my fishing 20 to 25 years ago when there were fish in our rivers but the runs of fish in Lewis and Harris were incredible even 20 years ago. Myself and a friend fishing on North Harris Estate water had over 50 sea trout to the boat on my most memorable day fishing. Tight lines for your adventures onto rivers. I look forward to the footage.

    Nice catch, wee tip either tighten your drag or palm the reel from the bottom so you don’t catch thumb on handle, might be all it took to lose that magnificent fish. Nice to release to well done

    Looks like an area of loch long I fished years ago, also had some cracking congers off it as well, but a bugger to get down and up from it, if it was wet, rainy

    • @theanglingfront
      @theanglingfront 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yep, that’s it, as soon as you said it was a bugger to get down 😁 had a few congers but nothing of great size, wrasse and pollock there can be incredible

      @theanglingfront the give away was the roadside barriers, don't know if the old quarry parking area is still available, after all the years since, another brilliant area, is on the other side, which you get to off the road along forrest road, park right hand side, and make your way down to the loch side, cracking site, sheltered, large boulders you fish from, depth of 90ft or so around 75 ft from the rocks, but as I said on the first site, an absolute bugger if it's damp, suffered a really scary moment there when I was fishing with my mate Ronnie Woods, I hooked a conger around the 25lb mark, at that time we were gaffing conger under the chin, I had a 4ft gaff, with a loop round the wrist in case you dropped it, got the conger gaffed under the chin, then I forgot, they spin coming out of the water, loop tightened drastically round my wrist cutting the blood off, crapped myself with hand and fingers going blue, before we could cut the loop away, a day never to be forgotten, tight lines young man

      Nice, I’ve never bottomed spinned with bait before, a friend uses this method and it’s deadly, I used to float fish a 3inch mackerel section for them to great success, must try the bait for them again it’s been years 😁

      Hi Paul, I must admit I was a bit surprised, this was at the start of May, normally where i fish the mackerel aren’t in usually till July or August from the shore! Was pretty cool as prior to catching them there was lots of baitfish moving around to the rock edges 😁
